Title: Replace my forks
Post by Yunus on 09/20/09 at 14:01:57

So long story short, a guy decides to turn left on a red light in front of me and now I have to change my front forks.  Of course neither insurance is covering it so  I'm doing it on a budget.

I hear you can get fork assemblies cheap on ebay but how do I know if it'll fit my bike?  Any other suggestions as to where I can get some?  I ride a 2001 ls650, I'd post a picture of it but it's just too sad to look at right now, one fork completely snap and the spring is all stretched out.  I appreciate the help, riding the bus everyday is just no fun (though I am looking forward to working on it!)

Go to bike bandit, and look up the parts, and check the part numbers for different years.I think they are all the same, but I'm not 100% positive.

Almost 100% sure, no difference in any of the years as far as forks are concerned.  well on diff, those little bug deflectors.

Or if you go to Ronayers.com and look up parts they have a cross reference search that will tell you what other models or years it is used on.

Perfect opportunity to swap stuff out & set it up with better brakes & a tubeless front tire.

When looking on ebay go for early '80's GS 450/550 models; they hook right up.
The forks and wheels on REX are from  a '82 & '83 GS450L model bike.
I got these forks, and also have another set from an '83 GS550 which have the mounts for the dual disc setup, which will go on REX when I have time to get them cleaned up and check out function.
I paid less than $50 for the complete GS450 fork set, and $35 for the GS550 fork tubes.  Both were in very good condition.
Ebay is a great source.

1--Your Savage doesn't have forks...it has front damper assemblies.
2--The on-line parts dealers I've used have their own numbers, not Suzuki part numbers.

Good luck, and a good thing you didn't get pranged like your front damper assemblies did.  Why won't the perp's insurance pay for your damage?  If you have the facts lined up, consider small claims court.  Of course, even if you win, you'll have to find a way to collect from that dead beat.
