Title: just clicks ( i know, another one)
Post by kenshi on 05/22/09 at 13:20:30

Hi all!
I got a 96 that sat for 9 years...lol
Have rebuilt engine and replaced a few things i knew where bad.
Hit start and starter solenoid and decomp solenoid click, heck even the starter gives and almost inaudible thud that you can feel with your hand.

But no spin.

My woman has a 86 that i borrowed the starter and the st. relay from....but no dice.
Had to put back on her bike so am using orig. parts again.

(Battery is new, local shop didn't have 14l-b2 so i got 14l-a2)
Any ideas?

With the plug out will the engine turn over ? and just because a battery is new doesn't mean it's worth a hoot - check the voltage on the battery

engine turns checked that this morning, will have battery tested soon.
voltage around 13.2v when i took off charger.

Strange though, when i take starter out and hit switch it spins fine.
Could be anti-backlash gear? When i reassembled it looked fine, counter gear also looked good.

Has anyone had the starter clutch seize up?

When you rebuilt the engine, did you have the left side cover off??

When I rebuilt my '01, when I took the engine side cover off, the starter intermediate gear and washer fellout on to the bench.  well........   When I put it back together, I had the gear and washers in wrong.  The starter didn't turn the engine. (@%#*%$(%^)

One way to check this without ripping the engine apart,   .. 1) take the sparkplug out, 2) take the starter off,  3) open the timing inspection port/plug on the cover.  4) get a socket and turn the engine backwards .

With the plug out you should be able to slowly go all the way around.  If the gear is in wrong and binding, it would NOT go backwards because of the way the starter clutch works.  If it can't go backwards, then the starter will not turn it forwards ... correctly... the right way.... (hmmm pick one)

ok, i can turn it counter-clockwise but not clockwise..

When i took the side cover off,  the gear next to the starter fell off and the washer. hmmmmm...
It was the gear that looks pretty plain, next to the starter, is there a wrong way to put it in? Does the washer go with the firs gear or the second one?

I think you nailed it. Will look at it this week. Thanks a Ton!

T Mack, your my hero!

I had put the washer on the counter gear instead of the 3 row'd gear (not gonna look up name right now).

So believe it or not after sitting for 10 years, and a quick reuild, she fired up on the first try!
WEEEEE!!
Now i gotta fix side stand switch (going to first kills engine).
Then i'm gonna ride around the block....lol

Put side stand up before engaging 1st.

hehe, yeah...i know that one.

It seems the sidestand is hitting the bolt under it, stopping it before it is supposed to hit the switch. Wasn't gonna put bolt head on that side, so gonna see if i can notch it out enough to make it work that way.

good, you'd be surprised how many don't.

All the bolts are supposed to insert from the kickstand side.
to get it in, you'll have to remove the kickstand completely and insert the bolt into the stand 1st, then slip it into the frame and engine.
