Title: Gel Seat opportunity
Post by false_illusion on 05/04/09 at 12:20:21

Hey Everyone!

I found a Gel seat on Craigslist and I need to know if it'll fit my bike...

I own an '07 S40 and the stock seat is one piece.

The Gel is a TWO piece...

Do I have to mod anything to get it to fit?

Also, the guy wants $100. He claims its new and from the pics it looks it.

Good price or should I haggle... :-/

Thanks Everyone!...MAN...this is a great site!  8-)

P.S He said it'll fit a "Suzuki 650"...it looks like my seat only in two pieces... :-?

Suzuki also makes a DR65O and a SV650 but they are one piece seats IIRC and don't look anything like the LS650 seats.  Posting a like would help.  I'm sure you'll need to mod something to get them to fit.  You'll need to check with LS650 owners who have the two piece seat and see how they are mounted.

Thanks Diamond Jim.

I'll do some more research...

A one piece seat will mount no problem to the LS650, however vice versa would require tinkering. The LS has a screw hole on the rear fender (right where the two pieces of seat connect) and the pillion has a tab on the front which mounts into that hole. You would have to McGiver a hole for that mounting tab at the front of the pillion so that a screw could hold it in place. It can be done. 100$ USD is a pretty good steal. You may only spend 20$ on materials to mount the seat. The driver seat should line up with screw tabs on the side no problem. Go check out the seat with your bike and see how it may fit.

Also, it does not hurt to haggle. I find its better to haggle in person. People are so used making offers on line and are braver in making smart comments and rejecting people while behind a keyboard. In person people are less assertive and more likely to bend. Goodluck and send us a link so we can see if its a savage seat or not.

I thought the 1 piece seat was entirely different from the 2 piece. Please tell me suzuki kept that insane mounting mechanism and still changed the seat into a 2 piece. God talk about making the problem bigger.
The heat welts on the old seat was some serious disaster though. If I ever meet the guy that designed that in a dark alley ...  >:(
Cool.

Thanks, odvelasc...

If he still has it I'll do that...take my bike up and check it out.

Can't be to hard of a mod... :-/

It's about 80 miles round trip away...but if it's 70 degrees and sunny...

it's a tad bit further..lol  ;D

I'm mostly interested in swapping for a gel due to my wife wantin' to ride with me.

Like to keep my Sweetie comfy!  8-)

Thanks again, odvelasc!

You could get your wife a Butt Buddy.  No, not the kind at the adult gift shop.  One of these:

Thats next on my list of bike mods. I will have to get rid of my drivers back rest though :( the buttybuddy wont fit if I have the drivers backrest on.

Oh man, I forgot. Check out my gel seat mod in the how to section. Cost me 15$ I think. If you  do my mod, maybe shave the seat a bit and scooch the gel pads a tad further back to where your tailbone its the back of the saddle and maybe add extra gel padding.

DJ,

Your last post made me bust out laughing!!!! The two piece will fit, might need a bit of thinking. I'm sure the "ears" where the two piece bolts down are not there. I had the sportster seat on my bike with 2 nuts and bolts. I doesn't take much with my fat a$$ on it.

Ha ha.

Odvelasc, I wonder if when doing the gel seat mod if one could make a metal template the size and shape of the piece of gel, heat it up and literally melt away the foam in the shape of the gel insert.  Whatcha think?

DO IT! But that seems like more work than needed. A power drill and a  grinding disk, and some patience should suffice for shaving down. I figure if you have a shop that can cut sheet metal already than yeah it would work, but if you dont have that handy than it sounds like a bit more work than needed, but sounds fun though. Tell you what!
Let me know how it goes for you Jim lol.  :P
