Title: Bobber build 101
Post by demin on 06/27/08 at 11:31:51

Ok all you bobber fans gather around, this is for you.I will put how to's and pics as I go along. If there are any questions please let me know, and we will start a thread in R.S.D.Ok with the infamous words from Trick My Truck....let's tear down.
This is after the first trip to the carwash
http://p1.bikepics.com/2008/06/27/bikepics-1334780-800.jpg
I don't think I need to show how to remove seat, and gastank.
To remove rear fender, pegs, etc.Remove rear wheel.Disconnect any electrical plugs to the rear fender area, and unbolt starter solenoid. From underneath there are 4 bolts that hold the entire rear fender assembly to the frame, including side rails(sissy bar, struts)see pic.

To remove belt guards, ther are 5 mounting points.2 at the very front of the swingarm,2 about a 1/3 of the way back(1 on top,1on bottom)and 1 at shock mount.

Rear fender(trailer fender) cut to length. This is for an un modified frame.I will probably be cutting the seat horns off of the frame on this build thus eliminating the top bolt holes for this style fender mounting.I will make fender struts/sissybar for it.

It's going down to the bare frame, getting sandblasted, and painted.
http://p1.bikepics.com/2008/07/13/bikepics-1352291-800.jpg
This is how bad everything is looking, even the swingarm doesn't want to move.

It is down to a bare frame now, just waiting on parts to show up.The gas tank in the pics is the one I bought. The mounting setup is a nice setup it is two straps you weld/bolt on.Has rubber grommets that four bolts go through, and bolt the tank on from the bottom.Once I get it welded on,and the exhaust mounting figured out the frame will get sent to be sandblasted.
I am keeping the frame stock, again(I think).

Got the tank today.I want one of these now for the XS build.I'm gettin' stoked. ;)How cool is this?

Here is the direction I'm going with this one.I also got a Maxxis 150 whitewall for the rear, front is backordered.

I'll probably weld a patch over it in the front. That'll give me a place to hide some of the electrics.

Got the rear fender mounted today.Pic is of where the regulator, and starter solenoid are mounted.

Also got my rear tire 150/80-15 Maxxis Classic whitewall.woohoo.

The struts are made from solid 1" round bar.9/16" holes,9 1/2" on center.Solid stock might be overkill, but I had some, and it worked on the first one,so I'm sticking with it.
For the metal seatpan, most people either glue the foam, and upholstery on or rivet/screw it on.For what they cost sometimes it's just cheaper to buy a seat. The black one on the purple bike was around 40 bucks, the metalflake seat I'm putting on this build was around 125 bucks.

The fender is from Northern Tool, part # 1263.It's a little wide for the 140 tire, but not too bad.A 150 looks good with it.
Here is the q&a thread I had started before on the build.

Well,it's on indefinite hold,and/or for sale as-is.I'm moving over the weekend..looooonnnnnggggg story >:(.I'll still be on here, but not nearly as much.If anything changes on the build y'all will be the first to know.
Thanx/sorry to everybody that has been following the build, and has thrown in their .02 cents ;D.

The build(s) might resume shortly.Just got a job at a bike shop.Hopefully I can use some of the shop. [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

The bike shop is dead, can't make any money for the build(s).But since I'm going back home I think I have a place to work on them.I've already got a couple paint jobs lined up to do at my buddy's shop.I should be able to get the 'Zuk to a painted rolling chassis, then look for another engine for it.

Good, and bad news!Bad news is I'm single after returning from Texas.Good news,I'm single now I can spend more time in MY new shop!!!!So thids build will resume.
I made the new mounts today for the custom Sportster gas tank.I think that's all the fab work that was left, except maybe a bracket for the upswept exhaust.By the weekend it should be a painted roller.I just need to build up a little cash to pick up an engine, and throw it in.The frame, and sheetmetal(what there is of it{tank, and short rear fender})will be sandblasted, and painted by Thursday(I hope).

Yes he shed some weight and he is back. I cant wait to see this beauty. Aside from pictures of Yonuh's bike, this is the most anticipated build of the year.

Very nice chronicle. Where do I get a springer seat? I checked the sticky in the market place section but couldn't find a solid link to a place that carries them.

OK,the frame is getting sent out to get blasted,or I'll do it.Depending on price.Hopefully this time I will get it painted.Posted in the marketplace for an engine.

Ok,update.I am starting this build......again.Since I'm doing it on a budget I'm just going to put the engine from my '86 in it for now.The '86 is needing attention pretty bad anyway, until I can scare up another engine for this build.

Any current pics?  I need some inspiration.

This is the most current pic. It's old though.
I'm thinking about changing colors though.Originally Iwas going blue metalflake, but now I'm thinking baby blue with white scallops or maybe turquoise with white scallops.I want it to
give it an older look, and go with the whitewalls better.
