Nope ;Dforgot to get the url first.
Funny you are the first to respond.I was going to pm you.It has 23,000 on the clock, haven't even fired it yet,but I'm thinkin' Verslavy.

You can open multiple exploders, or tabs when you forget something.

Got 2 built and promised (sort of) 1 I'm having trouble with (it ate to drills) and 2 left to weld.  About time to order again.

Sweet, I wish you would ride it out to me, I'd like a blue one for my brother.   8-)

Post by demin on 06/24/08 at 20:23:01

That's funny because I'm repainting it,but I was thinkin' blue 'Flake.Like I said the pics make it look good, that's why I drove 70 miles to go look at it,but the price was right(I guess),and I wanted to do another one.
Let me know when you have some more done,I'm in for 1.

I've been getting alot of questions, and responses about the last '87,and thank you for all of the compliments. If you guys are interested, and the "powers to be" of the site don't mind I will start a topic in the tech section, and document/pics as I go.

I don't think the PTBs will mind at all Demin. With the attention to detail you put into the last project, a full documentary on this one will have everyone watching you closely especially me.

Post by demin on 06/27/08 at 12:12:31

Started a topic in tech on the build.I will probably go to Northern tool tonight. So I will verify part # on my fender.I think I might pick up a couple of extras in case someone is interested in one ready to install on their bike.I think I am going Sportster tank on this build, with drag bars.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by strangeling on 06/27/08 at 12:26:27

Demin, I'm definately in for a fender if your gonna pick up an extra.

I've also started the stripdown (bike not me)

tell us about the seats, look custom.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by demin on 06/27/08 at 14:16:28

Ok,I could only get 1 extra fender.they only had two.So strangeling you've got first option on this one,I'll get ahold of you for more info.I will try to get a couple more soon.
The seat is the stock cover, but it looks like they stuffed 10lbs.of...into a 5lb bag.
The part # for the fender is 1263

you gonna do some cuttin on the frame on this one? you know ya wanna 8-)

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by demin on 06/27/08 at 18:30:49

What are you,a mind reader? ;DI don't know yet. After 20 bucks at the carwash I sorta got the frame clean, and the whole thing needs painted.I was thinking about getting ahold of Tigman, and have him hardtail it.He is the guy who did Grail21's on here awhile back.If not I might cut off the tops of the frame.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by rigidchop on 06/27/08 at 18:42:08

ahhh great minds think alike ;D i was really just thinking about the seat area. i really like the tigman frame BUT i have a problem with the 90 deg. intake for the carb. i know i saw one awhile back, but never asked how it ran. you cant really go wrong with a sporty tank again either.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by demin on 06/27/08 at 18:56:31

I'm also debating leaving the shocks on.I don't want to build the same exact one again.I've got so many ideas.  :-/

Oh you know I'm all over that fender !   ;D

I sent you a PM

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by rigidchop on 06/28/08 at 04:25:04

denim, are you set on the flat fender? that fender bender guy can do any fender ya want, ribbed, smooth etc. oh how bout some 3.5 gallon flat side tanks?  more capacity, and not overly large to overpower the look of the bike.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by demin on 06/28/08 at 12:31:10

Yeah I've seen the fender guy.I'm thinkin' about going that route on the XS.I just like the Indian Larry,Johnny Chop type builds.I screwed up buying two projects plus going home, and getting the Honda. The '86 also needs tires. So I'm trying to get a list of parts together for each bike.yeah right...
I need to get on Kustomjim's website see what he has.I would like to support our own.
Lancer I'll be getting ahold of you for this build.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by demin on 07/10/08 at 13:56:40

Hey guys.I got screwed on going to Ohio this weekend,I'm not working either,so I will be working on getting parts done, and maybe working on my builds.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by Jay on 07/11/08 at 04:39:07

denim,
Are you keeping the seat? I've got a crazy notion for my bike stewin' in the recesses of my brain, and the Savage seat and pillion might just do it. If you're going to part with the seat, I know I'd be interested. Thanks.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by demin on 07/11/08 at 06:41:38

The seat(s)are pretty nasty.Probably the only thing it's good for is the pan(s)

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by Jay on 07/11/08 at 23:06:42

Ah. Well, it was a thought. I'm not far enough along in the project process to consider recovering at this point. Still "ify" on whether I'll do it at all. Been arguing with the evil monkey that lives in my brain. ;D
Thanks Denim.

I think it would look good with a scallop paint job.
It'll sit high on the frame with those mounts.Friscoed! That's kinda funny being from a town called Frisco.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by Demin on 08/08/08 at 10:02:04

I think the bobber build is on hold for a while.Tore down the engine, and found alot of bad.Needs cam,cam chain, tensioner, rocker arms, possibly a whole head, and alot of helicoils.I found wood lag bolts holding the head cover on.1 head stud stripped out of the case.
I think I'm going to jump on the XS build.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by verslagen1 on 08/08/08 at 11:13:15

Lag bolts only on the cover?
what schlock mechanic would do that?
You gotta lota work ahead of you as you got to check every thing he might've done.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by Demin on 08/08/08 at 12:09:16

I hear ya,guys. You wouldn't believe this thing.Head stud siliconed into the case, wrong bolts in the head cover. It's on hold for awhile I think.
It's a f%#&*!g nightmare.Screwed again!I had a bad feeling about the motor, when I started the tear down, and found american bolts just cross threaded into holes. And 25,000 miles.I figured it would need a tensioner.Even the clutch basket is ground up from him riding it with the tensioner split.Believe it or not,I found all the pieces of the two springs, and the snap ring(yes it even popped off).

I would think you have some recourse for fraud, as while he may not of know the condition of the tensioner, but he did know the head bolt were glued in and should have disclosed that and the lag bolts.   >:(

Thinkin' about using this set up on both of the builds for hiding the electrics, and mounting the battery.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by verslagen1 on 08/25/08 at 20:48:10

Personally, I liked the frame stretch that +9 did.  Probably cause I don't know if my back will take an unsprung frame.  At times, I can barely stand the shocks that I got. (progressive is a comin')

Yeah I like the open frame look too, if you can just hide the battery a little better.  Will the battery fit in the frame opening under the seat?

I'll have pics shortly.Yesterday I went all out on the frame.I cut all the unused tabs off(stock seat mounts, belt guard, etc.)Welded on new tabs for the seat springs.I did this one a little different from the last one.Got the gas tank all mounted.Going to try and sandblast all the parts today. My black '86(used to be my girl's bike)is getting a makeover right now also.I'm still riding it,but I'm going to paint another set of sheetmetal, let it dry good. Then I'm going to do a the headplug leak, and change the clutch cable while it's apart changing the sheetmetal.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by Demin on 09/16/10 at 05:04:08

Well,it looks like I might just incorporate this build into my '86.The '86 is really needing some attention.I put about 1,000 miles on her this weekend. The plug/cap is getting bad especially at high rpm's.I blew both beams of the headlight out,Blew the baffle out of the exhaust at about 70(gone)Nail in rear tire(which was already my spare)front tire has dryrot cracks, dents in tank from going down on black ice in Dallas, etc. So it's time she gets some love.Still going in the same direction with the build though.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by Demin on 10/23/10 at 20:15:18

Well,I decided rather to build another Savage with the '86 really needing attention I am going to just do the build on the '86.I started putting some of the parts on(seat, tires, etc.)The Maxxis Classics are alot taller than the IRC Wildflares. For right now I put the shocks back on.I need to make longer struts. The rear tire hits with 9" on center struts. The white seat went on with no hassles.Monday I will get the piece made for the exhaust to make it an upswept.Haven't decided on the gas tank yet.I might run the Sporty tank, but that's getting used too much.
Pics soon! ;)

Well let's try this build.....AGAIN.I see my pics are gone.So I'll give everybody a refresher.
This is the direction I'm going with it.
http://p1.bikepics.com/2008/07/30/bikepics-1370555-800.jpg
I'll probably do something different with the exhaust on this one, since I put that muffler on the '86.
I did decide the '86 will get redone. And this one will still get built.
Here's where I am so far....
http://p1.bikepics.com/2011/07/12/bikepics-2238911-800.jpg
http://p1.bikepics.com/2011/06/29/bikepics-2232463-800.jpg
I'm going to repaint the tank.Wasn't feeling the scallops, and they have some spots in them I don't like. The whitewalls went on the '86,so I'm going to probably put raised white letter tires on this one.I want to give it kind of a Mopar muscle car look.

Title: Re: Next Suzi build

Still need to tear the '86 down. But it's been so nice this winter I'm still riding every so often.Stole some of the '87 build parts to put on the '86.So here's what she looks like as of right now.

I been trying to come up with an idea for what to do for a tank and that is exactly the idea I have in my head, where is that from, how can I get one?!?!?!!!

Title: Re: Next Suzi build
Post by Demin on 03/25/12 at 05:23:17

It's an aftermarket Sportster tank.Any local ftermarket shop can get one.Or look in J&P Cycles or one of those companies.Unless you want to do backbone surgery on your frame,a Sporty tank is about all that will fit on.If you look at the pic of the purple frame, there is a bracket welded on right where the decomp solenoid goes(it still goes on..I hope)That is for the front mounts. There are a few different styles of mounting tanks.I liked this tank because of the indented scallops.
These tanks probably run around the $150.00 range, new.

Here is another one I did a few years ago. This is just a 70's style stock tank.On the front it has mounting tabs.I welded a connector nut to the top of the backbone and bolted it.The rear I cut the tab off the stock tank and welded it to the new tank.

The rear is an IRC Wildflare 150/90-15.I also have the same style tire for the front in 100/90-19.The tire on it now is a Sumitomo 3.25-19.It was cheap and looks like the Avon Speedmaster.I'll run it on my orange bike eventually and see if I like how it handles.

Well maybe on savage I got a bike in pieces in 2005. It was a weekend away from running down the road. I used it to prototype parts for a year or 2. Then I took it further apart and powdercoated the frame somewhere in 07 or so. Then over the next 4-5 years Fitted various experimental parts on it ... till about 2 weeks ago I rode it ... still needs FE work, rear brake work etc etc ...
Worst of all ...
After all that waiting ... it still makes only 40 hp.

Cool.
Srinath.

What do you mean by puller? I might need a sissy bar fabbed and some tins painted..

Demins latest project is tops btw, of course  :D

You have to have a special tool to remove the flywheel.
