Title: Vintage saddlebags for the Savage?
Post by Jonny_Chicago on 03/21/08 at 01:27:59

Just curious if anyone has the soft vintage saddlebags, ones like from the movie "the wild one" on their savage.  They might be real saddlebags used on horses.  If so, just wondering how they look on the bike.  If you could post some picts. and possibly let me know where you got them.

Any input is much appreciated

Thank you much
Jonny

i went into price shock when shopping for bags(my 06 came with oem)the real leather saddle bags are  out of my price range and the weather extemes here were a concern..when the oem bags failed(3 months old) i traded for a set of river road slant bags and love em,large e nuff for a 6 pac cooler and then some ,hold their shape well,a lil armor all once and awhile and they stay lookin great..

I bought a set of equine saddlebags off of Ebay for mine, I want to think it was $30-$40. The leather is cheaper, actually it is some very coarse hide with a thinner layer over it for appearance, still not really pretty.   I cut the strap and laced it back together with leather shoelaces, apparently a '40 isnt as wide as a real horse.....   Anyway, I took off the seat and slipped it underneath and it works fine.  They are kinda slim and I can actually put a larger set over the seat for extra capacity.

During the 50's many of the bikes were outfitted with equine saddle bags.  The cheapest and most durable ones around were army surplus.  The nomenclature of the saddle bag is M1909.  They don't have a lot of room in them.  They are russet in color and were made out of 8 ounce leather.  You can find them on Epay...and they can go anywhere from 100 to 300 dollars depending on condition.  If that is the look you want you would be better served to buy a modern reproduction set.  They are somewhere around 250 bucks.  If you google Tom Smith's Cavalry Equipment you will find he builds excellent equipment to the demanding standard of the day.  Most of what is on the collector market is of WWI vintage...and in those days they tanned leather with a process using chrome.  Unbeknown to them at the time was that it had an ill effect long term on the durability of the leather.  So...a quality reproduction is probably your best bet long term.  They do look sharp hanging off a retro bike. ;)

Had these on my LS last summer ... got 'em from a pal who took 'em off an old Harley he bought;

Real "Old Skool" lookin' ... had to butcher 'em a bit to make fit my bag brackets ... still unsure if I'm gonna put 'em on my S50 or not ...
