Just gonna extend the forks.

Nope, never seen that exact modification before; but I wouldn't mind having 3"-6"  in the same area so I could more easily mount a 5-gallon tank and my HUGE police style seat:

In the picture above, the big solo seat is in a position that feels good in relation to the original position of the foot pegs and controls; for my stature.  ;)

Might go along with the 4" over fork tubes on my 99. ???

John,

Mount that in the stock position with a peanut tank and will call it a mid control conversion.   [smiley=evil.gif]

Now that's a stretch job I could go for!   8-)
Chain conversion?
How she ride?

Ya, I used later sprockets for the conversion and hadta buy two chains. The ride is perfect. Now I don't have the handlebars hitting my knees. Plus now I can straightarm it; a lot more comfy.

how difficult was this mod to do?

Title: Re: Savage plus nine inches

The sprockets were from a 2000 I'm pretty sure, so that part went right together. Extending the four frame tubes wasn't much to do either. All of the little stuff like rear brake linkage and sectioning the wiring took some time. I had to rejet it with this air cleaner too. Got that from pep boys. I think I went up two sizes.

I didn't install my 4" over fork tubes, the bike came to me that way...

But "Frank's Engineering" also called "Forking by Frank" has been the manufacturer of choice for as long as I can remember:

http://www.frankmain.qpg.com/

They'll turn out a pair and get them to you very reasonable. Just don't go asking for any silly +12" long forks for your 50º rake chopper from them unless you want to hear the "how dangerous that is" speech. After all these years, I'm betting he knows what he's talking about!

Yeah, I kinda feel like: Gee honey, I bought this really cool seat, so now all I have to do is build a whole new bike under it! The good news is: I can use lots of the parts from my old Savage!

I emailed Frank to see what he had for the Savage.  I'd like to extend it but to kick it forward a lil bit too.

Care to share the fit-up and welding details on the frame modifications you've done so far? I'm curious how you went about it. I keep looking at new welding/cutting gear. I got really good with stick and then mig welding and can even braze/weld well with a torch besides having good torch/carbon arc cutting skills. But I see people using "modern" plasma cutters and TIG welding, and it is so clean and perfect looking; I'm wondering if I really need to update my skills to work on frames.

Actually, a few inches added in the middle, and maybe a couple inches higher, would probably go along with a mid-control conversion very, very well. I've been thinking about this stuff WAY.... to much!  :D

The whole reason I lengthened it was because it was too short. My knees were all bent up and the handlebars were too close. Now the pedals are perfect and so is the steering. With four bars holding it all together, there's plenty of strength. Lotsa bikes only have two.  I hung her from the rafters with two chains and broke out my trusty die grinder and cut that pregnant dog in half.  I used four pieces of steel tube that jammed into the  eight ends and migged it all together. Next time I'd use tube the same o.d. and eight small sleeves inside.  Maybe use shorter pieces on top to rake that neck a little. If you're around L.A. stop by 90710, Harbor City and check it out.

I didn't call my bike a "pregnant dog". I called it a bxxxx. And what is a "mid conversion"?

I'm having a party when the savage italian (mpescatory) visits.

You have to come or we're raiding your refrigerator!

Darn! this is old news already.

That's one one of the seven deadly words.  I know it's a b!tch.

mid control conversion, some of the vertically challenged need to move the controls a bit closer to the seat.  When I saw john's seat, thought it would be perfect to move the seat closer to the controls (pedals)   ;D

5' 11" isn't all that vertically challenged. I'd just like to try a Savage with the controls where I think they should be for good control and comfort on a motorcycle.

It's funny to me that I used to ride dirt bikes sunrise to sunset without my butt getting as sore as a couple of hours on a Savage with a stock seat. There's a lot go be said about being able to put weight on the bike's pegs. It lowers the center of gravity of the whole mass of the bike/rider combo, plus your legs "suspend" your body off of the tail bone and gives it a rest.

However, considering the stock Savage's frame dimensions, I might need springs about a foot tall under that big azz solo seat to make the whole thing work. Might kind feel like riding "Bucky the Wonder Horse" when you were a child.   ;D :-X
