Title: Ed L. Forward Controls
Post by Ed L. on 02/04/08 at 18:08:32

I just finished the first batch of forward control plates, check you PM to see if you were the first nine on the Dibs List. Here's a pic of what is included, the two plates, a longer shifter rod, a extension for the brake pedal along with a hardened cap screw and a bracket to relocate the brake and brake light cable. I still need to get a CD together with some pics and assembly directions but that's easy enough. Oops, the picture was too big. will try again later. :-/
Here's two links of the work

And yes that's another slab of aluminium in the background waiting to be sliced and diced.

Savage_Greg, I'm asking $80.00 for a set plus $8.95 for prepaid priority shipping. That brings it to $88.95 to your door. I just finished getting the installation instructions together and am including a CD with some pictures of the set on my bike. Let me know if your interested, I'll put you on the "Dibs" list. I'm starting the second batch Thursday afternoon, gotta slice and dice some more aluminium.

Okay.  Bikes are beginning to come into the shop, so I guess that I can put it on my "I want" list.  Heck, I just spent than much on roses and a darned ol' teddy bear for Valentines Day.

Go ahead and "Dib Me", too :P

Eduaro, I'll need to box up a set and check on the shipping to Spain. Could you send me a PM with the address that you want me to ship the set to, I will need it to get the shipping cost. Looking forward to hearing from you.

How far forward did you actually move the controls?  Looks about 4", but don't really have any reference so I can't tell for certain.....

Title: Re: They're Ready !!!
Post by Ed L. on 02/12/08 at 16:15:12

I moved them a full 4 inches forward from thier stock position. If that is too much then just let me know how far forward you would like them to go. I am just finishing two sets that move the pedals 2 1/2 inches and one set that went 5 inches out.

I've just finished the second batch and only cut one 5 inch set which is spoken for. I still have some of the 4 inch sets which is what I've been using and I am 6'2". If you want I'll put you down for a 5 inch set but it will take a week or two before I'm ready to pick up some more plate and start another batch.

I have no idea whether the decorative-only Suzuki engine guard interferes or not.  I have the Wingerline Highwaybar installed and I got a 5" set from Ed that arrived late last week.  I purchased the necessary nuts/bolts/washers over the weekend and hopefully I'll get a chance to try installing them in the next few weeks.

Title: Re: They're Ready !!!
Post by Ed L. on 02/27/08 at 08:55:16

The plates move the pedals forward but not up so if the stock guard sits above the stock pedal location then I would think everything would fit.
Just got some feedback from Eanon, he had a little trouble with the kickstand spring binding on the left side plate but was able to clean it up with a dremel. There was also a little extra metal on the right side that got in the way of the exhaust header. If anybody has simular problems please let me know, Ill do what I can to make it right. ;)

Hi, I am only 5'6'' but would really like a set of these when I can come up with the fundage. Two questions:

Is anyone other then myself vertically challenged and if so what size would you recommend?

Are these still being made and if so will they continue to be made for a while?

Thanks

Title: Re: They're Ready !!!
Post by Ed L. on 04/06/08 at 16:54:44

Yeah, I'm still making them anywhere from 2 1/2 inch out to 5 inch extensions. I would think a 3 inch extension would be as far as you would want to go. Sit on the bike and see where you feet feel comfortable out  in front of the pedals. I'm getting ready to start another batch so shoot me a PM if you are interested in a shorter set. Thanks

Any remaining forward control kits? I didn't notice any information about preferred payment.

I notice in the description of your bike you list an oil cooler. I'm in Central Texas and it gets plenty hot here. Can you provide some additional info on that?

Thanks,

ED, When will you have a set ready, and how detailed are the installation instructions, I am new to motorcycles and not the best wrench turner I know but I can usually get by with the right amount of detailed help.  btw I am 6'2" would five inches be too long? I have the buck horn handlebars too if that makes any difference in letting me know if 5 is too much.
I also have an 87 so I would like to know if they will fit right out of the box with no fabrication and rigging on my end. thanks a lot.

Title: Re: They're Ready !!!
Post by Ed L. on 06/18/08 at 15:45:00

Torque, I just finished a batch and have some ready to go. I'm 6'2" and have been using a 4 inch set for a few years with no problem. I would recommend a 4 inch set unless you have real long legs. I've tried to make the kit as simple as possible and have made a couple of changes to make the installation easier. I also include written step by step instructions along with a picture CD of the installation on my bike.
Can't say that they are real easy to install but everybody who has got them on love them. Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

Mine feel superb for about 15 minutes, but then I realise that a cruiser/custom seat position only feels good for that long - for longer trips, I'm afraid the Japs have it right with their tourers and sport bikes.

That said, the Ed L forward control extension is absolutely first-rate for the Savage - turned a fairly good little bike into a beauty for me!

Ed, Kwaknut,

Could you two possibly collaborate on the plates.  I am interested in a set for a 4" extension, but I was wondering if KwakNut could provide a template for the modifications he made to the stock plates?  I really think they look, (no offense intended) better than the original.

I would expect there to be an additional tooling cost and will gladly pay it.

If you weren't in England, Kwaknut, I'd buy a set and send them to you to be cut.  I really think what you did to the control plates looks awesome......

I just tweaked Ed's great idea a little, and can take little credit for that.

I was intending to make a paper template when I fitted mine, because medium term I intended to have some made out of mild steel so I could chrome them (I didn't want to polish alloy down there because it would be a swine to keep polished).

However - I forgot!  So unless I take the bike apart again it's no-can-do.  That said, I'll look through the photos I have - it should be possible to reverse-engineer from the photos and some on-bike measurements to come up with an accurate template.

That said, I do have a spare set of foot controls, so if anybody has a 'standard' Ed L template they could email me, I could duplicate the modfication process and email back to modified pattern.

Isaac Newton was patted on the back a lot for his discoveries, and came out with the classic line "If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants", which meant his achieements were the result of greater progress by those before him.

In a very small way, I guess that's how these foot controls have evolved, and Ed's the giant here!!

I don't want EdL to take it the wrong way.  He indeed invented these extension plates.  He deserves all the credit and all the attention.

Its just that I find the simplicity of his design a bit industrial.  I like what KwakNut did by adding convex and concave radii and reshaping the extensions.  It looks a bit more, well, classy.

Ed L.

I am considering a couple sets but trying to decide on length.  Since you are 6'2 what is your inseam.  I am 5'10 and  wife is 5'7 and both interested in forward controls.  I think the inseam would get us the best estimate.

Thanks

I don't want to take anything away from Ed L. for he has provided a very great service in making and selling his forward controls to us but I feel I need to set the record straight a bit. Nightrain actually created the first home built forward controls. However he doesn't seem to be on the forum anymore as he has not posted in a very long time.

It was Nightrain's design that I used (with slight modifications) to make my forward controls. I hope no one gets upset with me for mentioning this.

I have to agree, I just carried on with the design, didn't really come up with it all by myself. I think it really was Nightrain who first made a set out of steel. Still thanks everybody, don't want my head to get too big, I'll need a new helmet if it does.  :D :D

The shifter side foot peg/shift lever and kickstand are two seperate pieces.  I had to do some moderate to severe adjustments to Ed's control.  It was only the shifter side.  The brake side only required a small bit of trimming and that might have been just because of the amount of paint I used.

I sent him a template of the changes I made so that he can provide it to other buyers that are less inclinded to modify themselves.

Not so much uncomfortable when by myself, at least not that I realized....  :-? .  When my 13 YO son got on though... :P ...  I felt real cramped.   He's 5'6" and growning fast.

I took it for a 30 min ride ... only took about 10 minutes to get use to the feel.   Going on a Breaksfast ride tomorrow at 7:30.  About 45 minutes to the place, then 45 minutes back.  I'll report back then.....

The hardest thing about installing them is pulling the two long engine mount bolts out.You need to have a bike jack or some way to support it,other than the kickstand.I did notice with mine that maybe it's not all the seat, but partly the control location that makes riding uncomfortable.I HIGHLY recommend these.

I think the term "Hard to install" is a relative term.  I'm really really mechanically inclined.   I bought my 2001 with the engine in pieces in boxes.

I thought they were easy.  A little tedious.  Like KwakNut I trimmed them down a bit, although my lines were just straight cuts.  KwakNut  did some nice curves.  The plates would work fine as Ed made them.  Hardest part was getting the brake cable aligned.  The gear shifter side went real easy.  I even extended the kickstand switch wire for a nice fit there.

Will they be easy for you.....   well...   get down on the ground and look at how the controls are mounted. Understand what you have before wrenching.

T Mack, nice setup. Is that just some rattle can spray or did you go all out and get them powdercoated?

Are there any pictures of Kwaknut's setup that I might be able to view? I hear a lot of chatter, but haven't come across any yet. If they're in this posting, maybe I just haven't looked close enough.

^^^ I painted mine and they started to chip like crazy when I was installing them.  So I put 3 coats of clear coat on them.  I've had them installed for about 2 months and so far no chipping with the clear.

Are there any pictures of Kwaknut's setup that I might be able to view? I hear a lot of chatter, but haven't come across any yet. If they're in this posting, maybe I just haven't looked close enough.

Dupli-color wheel paint.  Flat-Black first followed by a gloss clear coat.  The wheel paint is "suppose" to be chip resistant and solvent tolerant.  Note: I was in a hurry and installed them when they were dry to handle, but not totally cured.  I got some "lifts" around the washers.

I'll see if I can find Kwaknut's thread..... will edit in a link later.

EDIT:  Found it......

I'm heading out of town for a couple of weeks but will get back into production in mid November. I'll be sending out PM's and will post here on this thread when they are ready. I've been told they are so easy to install that even a girl has done it.  :D

Got a chance to take the new controls out for a spin today and I gotta tell you guys..what a world of difference! For anyone looking into more comfort I'd highly suggest these. They polished up real nice also. I didn't bother to take pictures throughout the process because nobody commented on the need. Maybe I'll post an after pic of the installed, polished pcs though. I'm 5'7" and put on the 4" extensions. They feel perfect and actually I could have almost gone bigger. Maybe one day I'll purchase another set and put these up for sale. Thanks again Ed!

All,
I have the Ed L. extensions on for several months now.  Love them.

Of course, I tweaked them in several ways.  I got the ideas from several others here.

1) trimmed them down for more streamlined look. You  have to be real careful on where to trim.

2) Made a bracket to move the heat sheild up a bit so that I don't burn pants legs. For saftey reasons, Highly recommended. (see link to picture below)

3) I put a piece of "ALL-Thread" between the two plate which greatly stiffened up the extensions. For those of you that normally don't fidget with things, All-thread is steel rod that is threaded the whole lenght.  I used 3/8" size which is normally available at many hardware stores.  (You will need 4 nuts too) Highly recommended. (see link to picture below).

See picture at > : Picture (http://www.users.fast.net/~tommack/ED-L_With-allthread.JPG)

Post by Ed L. on 01/10/09 at 17:43:28

Trimming the plates is fine, I have no problem with turning them into what you want. I'm just glad that you can take them another step further. I've started offering a cross brace with the kits which is a piece of 3/8 all thread rod and a length of medium walled tubing  for an extra 5 bucks which only covers my cost for materials. This cross brace was recommended by Toymaker and it seemed like a good idea. I can't add a tab onto the right side plate to relocate the heat shield without using up a lot more aluminum. The tab would need to be on the top of the plate and would involve a lot more cutting and waste which would affect the final cost of a set. The piece of flat stock to move the heat shield is a great idea, I just haven't tried to include something simular with the sets. Thanks for all the feedback I have been getting on how to improve the kits, I have made quite a few changes from the orignial set which is still being used on my bike :D.

Im in the middle of putting my plates on, and I guess this is for Ed or anyone else on here, has anyone had any trouble putting the mounting bracket for the brake cable and brake light cable on the plates? I just want to make sure I didn't do something wrong, because it took quite a bit of finagling to get it on there. It may just be the size of the bolt head I used.

Title: Re: Ed L. Forward Controls (save thread for refere
Post by Ed L. on 01/16/09 at 16:52:17

What was getting in the way? It is a tight fit between the bolt head and cable, would changing the design over to a smaller bolt like a 5/16 be better?

Title: Re: Ed L. Forward Controls (save thread for refere
Post by bluesavage218 on 01/16/09 at 22:49:25

Well I was able to get it on there, but I wasn't able to slide the rubber protective covering down over the brake cable. Once I did a little grinding on the bolt head, there was no problem. I was just wondering if you or anyone else had experienced this problem. Not a big deal really, I wanted to make sure I did it right you know?

Hey guys, I've had a bit of personal business that has kept me away for the last two months. Had to deal with a car accident that my wife had back in December which put her in the hospital for three days. She had a concussion and for about six weeks was getting her words mixed up when talking and had lots of doctor's visits. She wasn't allowed to drive for three months so I have been the designated driver. That along with her getting a case of shingles has really screwed things up. He11 I haven't even been able to get any rides in for over a month. I'm still making the kits, only the 4 inchers for now because there were problems with the 5 inchers that I couldn't work out. I'm finishing a batch of 7 so shot me a PM if interested. I'm still asking $100.00 per set and it comes with the cross brace.

Hey Ed, new to the board!  I'm 6'2 with 32" inseam and I would love a pair of at least 4" if not the 5" or 6".

A little about myself.  From Macon, Georgia.  28 years old.  Bought a 96 Savage in June '08 (hated the color yellow, but I've grown to love it on my bike).  I've put over 6,000 miles in about 8 months and rode all through the winter in Northern GA in sub-freezing weather (never been that cold in my life with 7-8 layers on :o)  Now I'm loving the weather.  Presently have my bike stripped down to basically nothing and doing some mods and cleaning it (eventually want to make it a bobber).  I've been loving life ever since I've bought this bike and love working on it (even though it probably takes me 3x as long as anyone else to do anything, and drink 3x as many beers :P)

Here is my comments on installation and fit:
It took me about five hours to put them on.  But I had to stop for supper and the first hour I spent getting down, then up and walking to the shop to get my tools then walking back and getting down and getting up and, well you get the picture.  (I will be glad to get my shop cleaned out, but it is too much fun riding and there is too much other stuff to do.)

I got a set that were pretty easy to put on, just a couple of hitches, but nothing that I couldn't figure out.  I do suggest looking at the pictures first to make sure you know which way is up.  I did have to adjust the gear shift and I need to adjust the brake, but the exhaust was too hot to mess around.  I will take care of that tomorrow.  Oh, boy, she rides like an easy chair now!

Highly recommended.  Ed sells a good product and shipping was super fast.

Well I haven't had any time to get in the shop over the last few weeks. Been getting ready for some house guests who were suposed to be here last week but still haven't arrived yet. My better half wants the house to be spotless so I've been elected to help keep the place clean. The windows are getting thin from all the rubbing we have been doing on them to keep them clean. I think house guests are like fresh fish, after three days they begin to stink and you want them to leave and they haven't even showed up yet. The good new is that I'll be starting another batch soon, already have the aluminum plate just need to cut it up. I can ship to the UK or overseas, UK91 savage but it costs more for shipping. Anybody who is interested PM me and I'll get you on the new list.

Thanks for the bump, I will be back in production soon. Can't do much in my shop during the summer here in Florida. The temperature in the shop hits the mid 90's by late morning which is way to hot to be able to spend any time out there. EdL,
I've read everything I can find on your fine forward controls and I sure do want a set.
I have a question I've not seen ask yet.
I drag the pegs on the tail of the dragon and lots of curves here in Western NC, so will a 4" set make peg drag better or worse?

Thanks,
Bigzuk

Title: Re: Ed L. Forward Controls (save thread for refere
Post by Ed L. on 01/31/10 at 19:03:47

That's a good question, the pegs are moved forward not down so I don't think they would get dragged any more that in the stock location. I've noticed that my feet are in a different posistion and my left heel drags a bit when squirming thru the twisties if I don't keep it sitting flat.

Ed

I've had time to think (sometime good, sometimes not) of two more questions.
1. I have the Suzuki crash bars. Will I have room to move forward 4" and still use them?

2. Have you ever used alum. diamond plate to make them? I think it would look nice. And yes, I do sometimes color outside the lines. :)

Thanks,
Bigzuk

Title: Re: Ed L. Forward Controls (save thread for refere
Post by Ed L. on 02/01/10 at 18:51:37

I don't know about the crash bars, they sit up high on the down tube and should be out of the way. I thought about using aluminium diamond plate but the metal is softer than the 6061 I've been using and might bend. I was thinking about doing a set like the old hotroders used to do. Take a wooden dowel with some grinding compound and scrub a circle design into the aluminium.

Bigzuk, Ed and others.

I have the suzuki bar on my bike, along with the controls.  There are no issues between the two.  The bar is high enough (and small enough) there is no trouble.

Again Ed, count me as a satisified customer.

you need a buddy or some type of jack to hold the bike up while you do the left side controls. Other than that Ed's kit is 100% bolt on and go.

I've some 4 inchers ready to, shoot me a PM if anybody is interested. The kit moves the stock pedal assemblies forward by 4 inches which gives a more comfortable seating by giving more leg room. The kit is complete with everything including instructions and hardware needed for the installation. Expect the installation to take about 5 hours depending on how good a wrench you are. me if anybody has any questions. Ed

Thanks for the kit Ed!  Installed this weekend, and the bike is much more comfortable now.  Wanted to put up some pics of my install.

For fun I polished mine to a near-mirror finish before installing. Left is raw as cut by Ed before polishing, right is after sanding, buffing and polishing):
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i386/nscott12/polished2.jpg?t=1311561216

Here's what it looks like on the bike (w/fingerprints from my greasy hands -- had to clean them again to make them shiny):
http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i386/nscott12/installed1.jpg?t=1311560932

Install took a little longer than I thought -- had to fiddle around with the brake cables a bit to get them right.  Shifter side was easy.  My advice is to take your time, read Ed's instructions carefully and mock up the controls so you know where the parts should go before you try to put them on the bike.

Have only gone on a test ride, but so far so good.  Fits my 6' frame much better.  Somehow shifts better than before -- maybe because I cleaned the shift lever pivot and the linkage for the first time!  Looks nice to me polished, was also considering painting them.  Not sure how they will look after some time in the elements -- will let you know how they hold up.

Been busy last few months and got pulled away from the things that are important to me. Haven't even been able to get any riding in or visit the site. I'm trying to get it back together again, I hate getting in a slump, maybe a little more caffine mixed with some exhaust fumes will wake the animal back up.

Post by Ed L. on 03/09/12 at 18:05:30

OK production is back up, the caffine and exhaust fumes worked. I am working on 3 inchers, 4 inchers and 5 inchers and am asking $115.00 for any size forward controls. I have two 3 inchers, eight 4 inchers and 2 five incher kits getting ready. I still need to gather all the steel, nuts and bolts needed plus cut the shift rods and do a little welding. The plates are made of 6061 1/4 inch extruded aluminum and will need a quick polish or paint before installation. Overseas shipping is about another $25.00. PM me if interested.

Hey everybody, I'm pull the kits off the marketplace for now. There was a problem with a set and the hassels I'm dealing with right now because of it just is not worth it for me. Don't know if it was caused by the kit or by the installer. I'm reviewing the instructions to see if that is where the problem was and checking how I'm making them to try to identify a possible problem at that end. :(

Title: Re: Ed L. Forward Controls
Post by Ed L. on 02/20/13 at 18:07:00

An unhappy customer who just purchased a set is threating to bad mouth me because of what he says is a crappy job on the kit he bought.
I have offered to refund his money with no questions asked and tried to work with him to correct the problems he is having but he  has refused to even come half way to correct the issues he says he is having.
He has now said that unless I send him $40.00 for his time he will post all the problems he has had trying to install the kit on the forum he has also stated that he will copy and "improve" my design.
It appears he didn't read this thread or the instructions that came with the kit. Half the problems he has had was because he was trying to install the kit wrong.
It's just a heads up so when he does follow through with his threat my side has already been posted.
I won't be blackmailed for $40.00 hush money, he can keep the darn kit and do what he wants with it.
I had to bring this out in the open so he wouldn't have leverage with his threat.
It's not my way to air dirty laundry on this forum but I had no choice in this.

After 20 pages of happy customers, and many more not shown, the weight of one is a feather to fort knox.

Even if true (which I doubt) an honest man would accept a refund and be done with it.

Exactly!

Ed, your instructions are very well written and easy to follow. I am one of the many who are very happy with the forward controls that you made. Don't let 1 sourpuss ruin your day

Ed, review your instructions yourself and if you have any doubts post the troubled instruction section here on your thread and let all your happy past customers as a whole give you feedback and suggestions for any needed wording changes.

Tell whoever it is that he can come talk to me about his issues in a PM.  Some folks just need to gripe and get it out of their system.

Next, shamelessly incorporate any good suggestions that come out of it into your product, either paperwork-wise or product-wise.  I worked in Quality for 30 years and any semi-valid complaints always went back to the engineering group with the "good bits" highlighted for incorporation into the next revision of the product.

Designers need feedback too, and they always listened to the valid bits.

The lady manager of the complaint department was affected by her job however.  The stress of reading a constant diet of all the bile and inflammatory statements over time became too much for her.   So, the moral of that story is  "roll on past it after you incorporate any good bits, and don't dwell on it as it can hurt you some if you dwell on it too much".

So, you (with me knowing you) need to pass this nasty along to someone mean enough to handle it without being affected (that's me).   Get your paperwork fixed if you have any doubts about it.   Keep on making the forward controls because most folks love them a lot.  Steal his good ideas if he had any and incorporate them because that is the only good value you will get out of the mess.

All I can do is try to use his complaints as a starting point to help improve the kits. I'm not posting his name because it would not be right to have the forum jump all over him, he is a Savage rider after all and that is what we all are dispite our differences. As far as I'm concerned it is over, I'm deleating his e-mails before reading them, got tired of being pulled into a peeing match with no ending in sight.
Thanks for the support.

Ah, communication has been rec'd from complainant, he didn't intend to create a kerfluffle and he is done with it from his point of view.

Issue over ..... when is that next batch of much beloved forward controls going to be ready again?

I will just add my $.02 to this thread...

I purchased a set of used forwards from another member and when they arrived I could tell they were Ed L's design but they were missing the extended shift lever. After unsuccessfully trying to get it from the prior owner and unsuccessfully trying to fabricate/locate an alternative option locally I contacted Ed by PM and asked him if I could purchase just that part and the instructions from him directly. Ed replied and sent me out the part & the instructions, free of charge if I recall correctly. When I installed the controls, the instructions were hardly needed and I think the only confusion involved the changes necessary for the rear brake, otherwise it's a straight forward mod that I would highly recommend anyone with a 30" inseam or greater.

Ed was a stand up guy in my circumstances and I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to purchase another set from him if the need arises.  :)

Give me some time to get squared away on the projects I have going already with my new lathe and mill, and I might just pitch in and help out with some in aluminum.  Only thing I might do alittle different is to delete the stock peg mounts and have a universal mount hole for aftermarket pegs instead, since alot of people seem to want to change out their pegs as well.  I've also come up with a design to do a heal toe shifter for floor boards but one of the tools I'll need for my mill isn't cheap so that will be a little ways off before I can do that.

I actually did have my kit down to a highly qualified computerized machine shop speciallizing in alumunum throttle and steering parts for alumunum jet boats. Making all the parts was no problem, but he just could not come up w/ anyway to complete the assemblies w/ o the same welding that I am doing. And that kinda defeats the purpose of going w/ polished alumunum.

Yeah there are a few things that I'm still trying to figure out on the final design, to keep the material costs and machining time down so I don't have to use a big block of aluminum to do it with, but I'll eventually get there.  It's just something I've been working on the design of off and on for awhile now, when I've had the time.  Once I get the design finished I'll do the prototype and test it to make sure it works properly before I start making them available to all here.

Post by Ed L. on 10/06/13 at 18:19:23

OK everybody I'm back making the 4 inch kits in smaller batches for now. Had a lot happen since my last post, got laid off from my job, wife had surgery, some home renovations didn't work out properly, got into a couple "hit when stopped at a light" type of car accidents.  don't want to go into it too much but the last year hasn't been real pleasant or fun. This is the first time I've been back to this site in over four months and haven't been riding for over 8 months, got the dead battery, stale gas Savage Blues. :(

I've redesigned the kits a little bit which is something I have wanted to do for a while, mainly cleaning up thier appearence and making them look better. I'll post some pictures later. The hardware and installation is the same, if you are a decent wrench figure 5-6 hours. There will still be some fitting needed on the bike and I'm advailable to trouble shoot.

I'm asking $125.00 per set which includes shipping to the lower 48 using Pre-paid US mail. This is the new cost of the kit, the older prices are no longer valid. Material costs and shipping have gone up and I need to pass some of that increase on. I believe this is a fair price for what you get which is a complete no frill bolt on 4 inch forward control kit made out of 6061 1/4 inch aluminum and uses the stock pedals, kickstand and mounts. I am running the aluminum plates across a sander to remove scratches and manufacturing marks. The aluminum is not polished or chromed, the finial finishing is up to the buyer. I will smooth it out the best I can before shipping.

I can ship to Canada, overseas and anywhere else but there will be an extra shipping cost depending on the destination. For overseas and Canada expect to pay around another $25.00 US. The final shipping cost depends on where it is going and any posssible customs charge on your end. For overseas payment I have Pay-pal, here in the US I prefer money orders or personal checks.

I have two sets that will be ready to ship out by mid week, first dibs gets them and I'll start taking orders for more.
Turnaround time for orders will be around 3 weeks but I'll be working on getting a stockpile of the kits together as time goes on.

post the "dibs" on this thread so we know when they are taken, post or PM me for orders and I'll get back with you.

Hope this answers most of your questions about the kits, if not let me know.
Peace,
Ed L.

Ed, just wanted you to know that I'm VERY HAPPY with the Forward Control Kit you sold us!!  I have to admit, due to having no garage (storage shed only) and no safe way to hold the bike up off the side stand, I took it to my local dealership and had them put on. Even with the cost of 3 hrs. of shop labor, I'm really glad I got your FC's!!

The bike feels totally different, not as "tiny" and I don't know why but it shift's smoother with the FC's than it did in the standard set up!! THANKS again! Have a most excellent day!

It wasn't meant as an insult in any way Ed. I'm just nervous about digging in. If you say it's pretty straight forward then I will just change my panties, put my man pants back on and get to it. I'll post again if I have issues.

Thank for the reply!  :)

Hey, no problem, just got some bad news about one of my dogs and am  little snappy. Putting the kit on is a big job and I understand how nervous people get doing something for the first time on thier bike. Should of seen me the first time I rejetted the carb, took me all day.
I just wanted to find out how to make the instructions and pictures better for the next batch. I can't improve the kits without feedback as painful as it might be. They have been through a lot of changes since I put the set on my bike.

Ed L., do you still make these forward controls? I recently purchased a 2000 LS650 Savage and would like to get a set of forward controls. I'm 5'11" and it's just a bit cramped the way it is.

Oh well, I'm a newbie on here. When I posted, it took me to the last page and I can see that you evidently still make them. If you would let me know when I can order a set of the 4" ones, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Hey Ed, I'm new 'round these parts but am just in love with my new '03 LS650 Savage. I've been checking out this entire thread and I must say, and an engineer myself (Electronics) that you have made an incredible product that fit a very serious need. Kudos to you for your ingenuity!

I'm 5' 10 and a smidge and got some new handlebars to eliminate MOST of my crunching issues...this bike will probably see 500-600 miles a year (I bought it to re-learn after 30 yrs away from bikes) so I am not really concerned about long rides. What this mod ALSO does however, is make it a whole lot easier for us taller guys to find the pegs. I find myself constantly having to "search" for the LH peg when I start out because it's a bit too far back.

I'd love a set of 4" if you are making a new batch. I'd even be willing to send you a money order in advance if that would help.

Once again, great work!

Started another batch of 4 and 5 inchers and will post when theya re ready. In the middle of a 95 degree plus heat wave and the shop gets over 100 by early afternoon. Only good for a few hours before I start melting.

Finally got them on there. After them sitting for most of last summer and not having access to the bike in the winter, i put them on a few days ago. Learned some things.

1 If you put your bike on a plywood box to get it off the ground, you have to take your exhaust off to get to those little clamp bolts for the break line/cable.
2 If your exhaust falls off after you take the motor bolts out, you might have 1 bolt missing and 1 bolt missing its head from the muffler mount........
3 That solves the random squeaking you couldn't tell where the hell it was coming from. ;D

All in all it was pretty easy once i got into the groove of it. Took the time to wrap my header/pipe with a V&H wrap while it was off and that eliminated the need to relocate the heat shield.

Took a 370 mile round trip between then and now and i'm sure glad i put them on before i did. Much less sore in my legs than i had been on a shorter trip previously.

Thanks for a great product!

I'm asking $135.00 for a 4 incher and it includes shipping to the lower 48 states using prepaid priority flat rate mail. The kit has everything needed for the installation, stainless hardware, the plates made outof 6061 1/4 inch aluminum, a longer heavier duty shift rod, instructions and some brackets for the rear brake cable.

Title: Re: Ed L. Forward Controls
Post by GridMonkey on 08/08/15 at 22:00:23

Hey,
So this isn't your fault, but a note of caution. If you have your header wrapped and you put on these forward controls, you should round over the edges of the right plate. The vibration has caused the edges of mine, not rounded over, to cut through the fiberglass wrap on my header. This may not happen in all cases of course but i thought a heads up could be useful.

Still love them, will have to find time to round them over soon.

Title: Re: Ed L. Forward Controls
Post by Ed L. on 08/09/15 at 07:50:33

GridM,
Would grinding that edge back take care of the problem? How much needs to get removed? Just asking so I can make a change in the template for the next batch.
Thanks

Title: Re: Ed L. Forward Controls
Post by GridMonkey on 08/09/15 at 18:45:38

I think just a simple half round over would do it. I took some pictures so i could get a better idea of what happened and it looks like the inside edge on the upper portion of the slope is what did the cutting.

(Pic taken from above/in front looking down the slope camera just under the down tube)
http://https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/54329179/DSCN1074%20%28Mobile%29.JPG

You might be able to just make the plate a bit smaller on that edge as well, seems like there is enough meat on the plate to hold, your call though, im not a structural guy.
http://https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/54329179/DSCN1070%20%28Mobile%29.JPG

I plan to take off maybe 3/16ths or so with a band saw at work, but im not sure when that will be, when i do ill send another pic your way to show you the clearance on it, unless you've made your mod already.

Hey Ed,

I'm interested in picking up a set of your forward controls for my '04 ls650.

What length extension (4", 5", or...?) would work "best" for a 5'9" guy with a 32" inseam?   I like a decent stretch, but not a fully locked out knee.

Ed,

New to the forum.  Converting a Ryca Tracker Bike to a bobber and need forward controls.  Do you still make them and would your controls work where the bike has been modified from stock (no front peg assembly brackets, bolts etc. present)?

Thanks.

Title: Re: Ed L. Forward Controls
Post by Ed L. on 04/29/16 at 19:10:53

KC,
The kits move the stock pedal assemblies forward and if they are not on the bike because of the conversion I'm sure they won't work. You might find a set of stock assemblies here in the marketplace.
Have some 4 inchers advailable right now, just finished a batch.
Ed

KC/ED:  Sorry to jump in on your thread - but I would be willing to trade KC some very nice stock mounts/pegs/pedals for his mid mount RYCA parts.

He could then use your forward controls if he wanted to get some.

I sent KC a Personal Message - not sure if he can reply since he only has one post.  My email is:  dwhitacre@cardinalengineering.net

(I will remove this post once KC sees it).

Thanks - Dave

Raz, I recently installed Ed's 4" controls on my bike. So I'll post a couple of pics for you  :) Keep in mind I polished them to match the crankcase cover. They come with a 'machined' finish.

I've had them on for a little while now and have to say, I'm very happy with them!

Thanks Ed. I have to say again. I'm really happy with the forward controls. I've gotten used to them now, and I love the ride - it ain't no performance bike lol ... but it has such a cruisey feel.

As I was installing them (I'm a newbie) I was really impressed by the ingenuity of the design. I can't think of a simpler way to make such a dramatic change. And for the money, I feel like I got really good value.

Cheers

In response to your other messages:

Thanks for the compliment on the seat. I put a lot of thought, and work into it.

Yep, I'm from Australia - down in the SouthEast, on the coast. I love Oz too!

I didn't really reshape the controls. I just filed the edges to clean them up a little bit, then polished them with 300, 400, 600 grit paper, then finished them with Autosol polishing paste. All the polishing created a slight radius on the edges.

FWIW, I sprayed them with clear acrylic, but it was hopeless! It's very difficult to get it to apply smoothly on highly polished metal, and the slightest knock scratches the paint. I cleaned off the paint and just installed them 'raw'. So far they have held up really well.

I need to apologize to everybody who has asked about the forward control kits and didn't get an answer. I had some personal problems and got drawn away from the board over the last few months.  :(
It's going to take a couple of weeks to get the shop back up and running but I'm still making the 4 and 5 inch kits. Materials have gone up some so I have had to increase the prices up to $150.00 for a four incher and $160.00 for a five incher. The price includes shipping to the US.
Let me know what size you are interested in and I'll get back with you.

Post by Ed L. on 05/09/18 at 15:30:18

I'm out of any ready to ship right now and need to run a small batch. I like a 4 inch set myself but the 5 incher works great for a 34 inch inseam.  If you are going to do it go with a 5 incher just because. I'll get the shop fired back up.

BTW- As it is now, I come to feel like the bike's pegs have me sitting like I'm in a little grade school classroom chair. This mod will rectify that nicely.

PS- From you locale, can you see our Florida Gulf coast sunsets like I do?

Post by ruckus430 on 05/11/18 at 12:02:40

Guys I came back from the shop after they installed the 5" Ed L set, holy smokes what a difference.
My slim solo seat pushed me closer to the tank and lower than the stock seat. Because of this I badly needed the 5" inch extensions.
If you are running a stock seat I believe a 4" set would do just fine.
The 5" inch set is perfect for me, no more crunching in my gut cause my knees were so high, no more squeezing my foot between the shifter and the left foot peg, and my legs are stretched out while maintaining a slight bend. Also the low seat and crunched pegs were pushing me to rear and off my solo seat, now I sit comfortably on the pan of the seat. Thanks Ed L I'll probably have this bike forever and when this one dies just buy a 2018 model.

Diamond T, For some strange reason I don't have any before and after pictures, hopefully some one will have what you are looking for.
The current pricing still is $150.00 for a four inch set and $160.00 for a five incher. I don't have any ready to ship right now, need to start cutting up a 2x4 foot slab of aluminum for the next batch which is a bit of work.

Title: Re: Ed L. Forward Controls

ED L.,

I just made my final-final adjustments after taking an epic 60 mile ride in the country. Just needed raising the clutch lever and tighten a loosened mirror. Other than that it was A1 perfect.
Until now, I was never comfortable enough to do little more than 20 miles. With 5" extensions it feels just right and like a different model bike. Thank millions.
I thought you should know, I did have to drill out the main mounting holes a bit in order to line the bolts better. Other than that is was an easy install following your directions. I'll send a photo when I can.
Cheers mate.

Well Ed, this will sound dumb... but I want forward controls, I just don't know how to figure out how far forward they should be. I know that the current placement of the controls is fine for sub-50 mile rides, but anything longer becomes a pain in the butt.

Is there a general chart or something I'm missing that will help me size out what I need/want?

I think how far forward you need controls is a matter of personal comfort.  Your height and handlebar version come into play, I made my own temporary pegs and adjusted them to see what worked best.

 For me I didn't even notice a difference between 4" and 5"

That's fair. Since I'm not really a tall person, or even someone with a long inseam, it's probably best if I do some measurements to see where my feet would comfortably rest.

Hey there! I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post in this subforum yet, so mods correct me if I'm not supposed to. Mr. Ed, I'm interested in your forward controls, if you're still making batches of em.

Does your kit include everything needed, give or take a little shadetree fabrication? What length extension would you recommend for someone with, oh I dunno, 30-32" inseam?

Please put me down for 4 or 5" extensions on your next run if there's still room in the list, and I'd be happy to put down a deposit.

Thank you!

SOLD -- I have a set of aluminum 4 inch forward controls I purchased from Ed about 8 years ago and never got around to installing them. I'd be willing to sell them for $80+shipping cost. If anyone is interested, send me a message.

Tri,

assuming this is still available, Dibs! I am interested in these, but don't have the post count to PM. I'll PM you once I hit 10.

EDIT: Payment Sent! Thanks Tri!

I've been avoiding this thread mainly because of a bit of burnout from making these kits. I'm in the middle of cleaning out my shop, ended up not having the room to manufacture the kits which didn't help with the burnout and had to walk away from them for a while.
Not sure when I'll start making them again, there is a lot of interest and need for them still. One of the problems I has was that I felt that I could make them better but didn't know how and want to revamp the design a little. Some of the feedback I got was negative, I know not to let a bad apple ruin the rest but getting flamed on a PM is not a lot of fun and after a couple piss1ng matches I just got tired of the cr*p. Maybe I'm soft skinned but that's the way it is.
That along with an increase in raw materials is the pretty much why I've had to step away from making the kits for now. Hopefully I'll be back in business when I find my workbench and get my head straight.

Thanks for the update, sir! I think anyone would agree that one's health (and sanity) takes priority over business. Keep on rockin, brother!

Sorry to hear this. Sucks when there are unappreciative people out there. If you decide not to move forward with producing these anymore there are some other options for you besides producing these by hand.  If you have a CAD drawing you could sell the files and people could go and get their own made, or you could take the CAD drawing to a shop and get them made. It may relieve some of the stress for you. Just a thought... If you do ever feel up to producing these again I am 100% a customer! Hope you decide on something, I know there are people out there like myself who appreciate the hard work and help of others!

To WHOM IT MAY CONCERN!!!
I purchased a set of 4" forward controls from Ed, back hmmm. 2 seasons ago...
TOP QUALITY kit, build, supplied needed extras,
Personally I DON'T SEE how anyone could complain, or not be 100% satisfied with Ed's kit. The kit is well made, GREAT easy to understand instructions, and EVERYTHING you need to do this mod smoothly. If anyone had a complaint, I'm certain it was something on thier end and NOT Ed's
Just my opinion ppinion

That would be AMAZING!  Thank you!  I am a graphic designer and web designer. Once you have the files designed I would like to put together a website with step by step instructions for people with whatever you design to help make it easy for people to make their own. Of course as long as you are ok with that, and I will make sure you get full credit for it all.
