I'm watching this thread closely.  I HAVE to replace the bars on mine.  That or else just not ride it for longer than 10 minutes.  I am thinking along the lines of some drag bars.

Look around on E-bay. Several HD and other bars for sale.
One thing to remember: they're 1" dia.

I've had the buckhorns, drags and a low rise harley bar.
The low rise harley bar with the short riser felt good for a bit with my long arms ( I'm 6 ft. in the morning) but I was leaning forward too much.  Tried the drag bars with the high risers and that felt great.  Except I could no longer see behind me and not enough realestate to mount my windshield and VR1.  Now I'm using the harley bars and high risers, perfect.  I didn't have any issues with cable length, but if you pick a high bar you might.  Anything with a 1" diameter will work.  I picked up the low rise harley bars from a local shop for $25, emco brand.  And you may need to drill the bars for the locating pin in the controls.  Position everything on the bar first before you drill.  I copied the position from the buckhorns to the harley bars and discovered there wasn't enough room for the levers before the bend.  oops.   ;D

Don't drill, remove the locating pegs. Switch housings
will clamp.

I had the buckhorns and the swap to different bars was easy. Re-route the cables to take up the slack and zip tie 'em.

i put harley bars on debby's bike right after i changed the seat out for a sportster seat. the bars are a similar type, but wider and flatter than the suzuki bars, i drilled the locating holes for the switches, after careful placement and determining the exact location. i got the bars from a local independent harley repair shop, he has lots and lots of "take off" bars laying around, we go in and just start trying bars until she finds what she likes. we had to do it for her harley too, $10 @.

I like these drag bars (http://store.wpsracing.com/wiandlowhafo2.html) on pullback risers.

Yup.  I took Kropatchek's advice on this and filed them off; worked perfectly.

so harley bars "will" work......hmmmm that really opens up alot of options

what about the risers? harley risers take a 1/2" bolt? ??? you dont have to drill out the bushings in the upper tree for the larger bolt? thanks again

Mine are harley bars off a dyna-glide I think.  Pretty standard shape and feel, very comfortable and easy install.
More pics can be seen on this posting...

When you take off the stock risers to use harley risers the larger harley bolts will not go thru the spacers inside the rubber dampers in the top and bottom of the upper triple tree. I just pulled out the stock ones and found a piece of larger pipe that the harley mounting bolts would go through. I cut two pieces the same length as the old ones, oiled them and shoved them back into the stock handlebar dampers. Worked fine. Put in a search for Handle Z-bars and you will see more options and more info. The post is in the cafe section.I just made it easy for you. I put in an update in that post so it should be near the top in the CAFE section    Hutch

I have bars like serobots's - the almost flat style suits me fine (I like a slight forward lean on my '97 - has no risers). cables were fine - just had to tie a couple of wires up to bars & wrap - black - tape round the throttle adjuster nut so it would not chip paint on the tank. Thumperclone does not like stance but I don't like the bars he has as originally fitted to his 2005 (or is it '06?) - too high for me.

I put  1" Z-bars on mine. Very comfortable. Where are you in WV?

Savage_Rob, were the 4" risers necessary to avoid hitting the tank? Im thinking of getting the 32 inch bars from that site or maybe some sportster bars. Also are dimples needed?

I've been trying to locate the thread that showed how to make your own risers. I've used the search option but haven't found anything.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I read somewhere on here about using 19mm deep-well sockets as risers ... install with the stock buck-horn bar clamps, but you'll need longer stem bolts ... maybe someone who's done this mod can elaborate?

I did the 19mm socket risers. It does take longer bolts but they are easy to locate. I have had no problems,

Those are HD bars. The knurling is a bit closer together than stock bars, but enough grab that they don't move.

Hey clueless, do you know which Harley bars they are?

Also, what are the 2 clamps that are mounted half way up the rise on the bars?

My dyna bars clear the tank with stock risers by an 1/8" of an inch.  Clearance is dependant mostly upon how low you tilt them in the riser.  I just rotated them down to minimum clearance with the wheel turned full right and then locked it down.  Feels pretty comfortable there.

I'm not clueless (though some may argue) ;D And boy if there was ever a pitch for a punch line...

But seriously, I'd like to know exactly what HD bars those are too; because they are nice, as are the socket/risers.

The clamps be for a windshield I'd guess.

BTW, I have the same risers as Rob, but my bars have a slight rise; are 32" wide, and only a little angle back and down. As seen by the visable knurling, they are also originally made-for-HD bars.

That setup fits me well. I can put my elbows at normal rest, and my hands will fall right onto the grips without 'reaching' (just as it should be IMO).

FLH Bars......went to dealer and looked around 'til I found what I liked. Yep, those are windshield mounts.
