does the brake light work?  It's a semi-separate circuit.  the brake and tail light share a ground.  are teh leads getting voltage?
draw a diagram for us of how you rewired the bike...

I have a similar problem; my taillight works along with the front brake light, but my rear brake doesn't turn the brake light on. :-/ ???

Im away from my bike for a couple of weeks but will look into it when I get back. Thanks for any suggestions.

That's what we all think, before we find where we goofed up :)

It is a dual element bulb and socket with 3 wires, right?

The wiring diagram has three wires from the connector to the light:
1. B/W ground
2. Br     Running light
3. W/B  Brake light

The Savage uses 3 wires for the rear tail/brake light and you have to have a ground.

Also, it's not just the rear brake switch.  The light works off the front brake too :P

Find the rearbrake switch, it'just above the RH side of the rearfork hinge.
See if it moves when you apply the frontbrake lever.

2 wires one for brake, one for marker , may need to run ground from frame of light housing to bikes frame..with ohm meter you can check ground path from outside of socket to bike frame...trailer lights sometimes use the frame as ground..

Why are you using a trailer light from Lowes?  Moving the light over to the swingarm?

I'd think that you'd want it rubber mounted with a separate ground wire because of vibration on the swingarm.
