Hello All,

I have a problem I don't recall seeing before. Last night Was going to local bike night. Started bike and the starter stayed running. Hit kill switch starter stayed running turned off and removed key starter kept running. After battery ran low starter stopped. Bump started bike went to bike night no more problem. What's going on? Help please.

sounds like you have a short that is keeping power flowing to the starter motor or the starter switch is messed up. Check all of the conenctiosn that lead to the starter motor. Do you know how to use a voltmeter?

If you went through all that and the starter kept running - that had to be a stuck starter relay I would think

Sounds like the starter relay, if it happens again give the relay a "tap"

Somewhere there was a thread about my (and other's) thumbswitch and the contacts being pitted. From my experience, the next stage for pitted contacts is "welded" contacts (where the two contact surfaces actually are stuck together by a weld created by the arc when the contacts close or try to open).

Bottom line, check your thumbswitch also. Look at the surfaces of the contacts they should be relatively smooth and shiny.

Without consulting the schematics I can't be absolutely sure but I think that removing the key would have stopped it if it were the thumbswitch. I'm leaning toward the relay too at this point.

Thanks for all the help. S. R. I was under the same impression about the key switch. I too am without a wire diagram. The relay makes sense. Is it a big job to change it out?

pretty easy - follow the heavy wire from the starter
