Title: Tire Stem Lights: What's the Word?
Post by cigaro on 12/19/05 at 12:13:37

Those blue, red and green tire stem lights are all over eBay.  What's the word on them? Worth the $15? Anybody using them?  Provide good side illumination at night?

You can buy them at WalMart or auto stores just as cheap. Not sure they are worth the trouble.

they are illegal in my city, not sure of the state or county.  Avoid colors like RED and BLUE naturally :)

I put one green on the front tire. I carry it in my jacket and only put them on if I ride at night. Getting cager's attention  ;D and I feel safer ;)

I always wondered how long those tiny batteries last. Or if they're light enough they won't unbalance the tires. I may just buy a pair for night riding.

Bought them 6 months ago and they're still ticking. I only use one at the time in the front(double the usage time ;) ); if the cager doesn't see the front one then he/she won't see the back one  :( . I didn't notice any imbalance on the front wheel. $7 (at Walmart-bicycle section)is a cheap investment for the peace of mind :)

Great advice SavageDude. Exactly the kind of info I was looking for. The idea of one in front makes good sense, too. Didn't realize you can get them cheaper at Wal-Mart, too.  If they illuminate as described, they may be better than side running lights.....

The Auto Zone store here had them in sets of four as cheap as Walmart

The difference between the ones at Wal-Mart and their more expensive counterparts on eBay is the amount of light they put out. Aside from being less bright, the cheaper brands also tend to take on water and burn out.

If you just want to be noticed, opt for the cheap ones. If you want actual side illumination, get a set off eBay. But as somebody mentioned earlier, they might illuminate well enough to attract the attention of cops or klepto kids...
;)
