Title: summer ride
Post by chriss on 12/17/05 at 05:17:43

This spring Im taking the trip of a live time. At least for me. I live in Portland Oregon.  My neighbor who is a long haul truck driver is gonna transport my 2 friends motorcycles (a 1000cc BMW duel sport and a kawasakii Police Interceptor and my 02 Savage back to Virgina. We are gonna fly back and meet him.  We are gonna spend 2 months or more traveling on our journey home. Im a civil war buff and want to vist some battlefields. My friends then want to head south and travel the Great Smoky Mountains. We are all 3 very good pool players , one holding 2 national titles. We're gonna play pool to finance alot of our trip. We all have friends scattered thru out the states so it will be fun to stop and visit on the way home. Have no real idea where we're going or when we will make it home, just know we are going.   They used to tease me about my small bike at first but now think its the best bike made for its money.  Ive added a supertrapp, a k@n air filter, and had it rejetted so it will cruise all day 65 to 70 if needed. Now its actually faster than theirs to about 70 mph.
Question is...if you were making this trip, what are some things that would be important for you to take that you wouldnt want to be without. Other than personal hygene products and clothes of course. Space is limited cause I will be traveling with no saddle bags. Just my back pack, a small bag on the rear seat, and a fork bag. Just looking for some things that you have found to be valuable to take along that I might not think of.....I cant wait !!

Don't forget a camera for the trip. A notebook to write you memories and thoughts in would be top on my list.

Chris:  You better take a pencil sharpener for the pool cue!

Best of Luck!  Sounds like a great trip!

If you get a chance, ride the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and North Carolina. It is an incredible road for motorcycles. The Skyline Drive is pretty nice too  :)

WOW, sounds cool. Have fun on the trip.
What to take with you:

- the standard stuff (clothes etc.)
- oil + sparkplug
- some small tools
- equipment to do the valve clearance (I think you'll be doing some 2000 to 3000miles?)

Good luck and have fun!

There are very few things that cannot be fixed by throwing a large hunk of cash at.  Having about $5,000 available, plastic or traveler's checks, will allow you to not worry about unexpected expenses.

I am into computers.  I would have a digital camera, one of the smaller notebook computers, and my Freedomlink account so that I could park near most any UPS store or McDonalds and do a daily update of my blog.

Paladin:  I knew you were into all the high tech stuff and I sometimes wonder why you go for the good, ol-fashioned suzi? ;)  Opposites attract?

jimbrough:
Not smoke FROM the ride.....
Smoke FOR the ride. ;)

Chriss:
Sounds like a blast. Have you seen the semi-documentary "Long way round" with Ewan Macgregor and Charley Boorman? A little more rugged than what you are facing, but may be a good primer. An interesting watch none the less. Hope it all works out for you.

When I rode L.A. - Seatle - L.A. and the 5 weeks in the U.K. I found that cigarettes gave a double meaning to a butt break.  I could almost see taking up smoking again just for the ride.

Try to get by the Jack Daniels Distillery while you are out there, they are in Lynchburg, TN. They have a tour that's worth the time. My husband is a Tennessee Squire & goes out there to parties a lot. His family is originally from the Great Smokey Mountain, Georgia area, beautiful place to ride. Be sure you take a list of emergency numbers (say- yes Mother!) and any prescriptions you might be carrying. If you are going to carry a pistol, check the laws first. Good rain gear is a necessity, and plastic bags to keep things in saddlebags dry.
