Title: My New Tank
Post by lancer on 10/28/05 at 08:50:45

Just wanted to share my new tank with everyone................................well it is the beginning of my eventual new tank.

This does  not show up very well but this is the style  I am going for.  It is the traditional BSA Goldstar racing tank.  It is available in either polished alumunim or fiberglass, and retails for $450-600.   THAT IS WHY I AM TRYING TO DO IT MYSELF!

I didn't think that styrofoam worked very well with gasoline  ::)

What bike is that?  A BSA or Montesa?

It's a BSA Goldstar.

There is a company called "Epoxyworks", and I receive an annual booklet from them.  Last year they had a little story ing the pub about a motorcycle owner who used their products to made his own tank, seat and fenders.  For the tank he took a block of foam and shaped it into his desired tank, then covered it with fiberglass and their epoxy resin.  When he had it they way he wanted he drilled out the hole for the filler cap and started pouring in a solvent that disolved the foam...leaving the shell of the tank.  He then did the finishing work...attached the hardware and mounted it on his 60's era Ducati.  It was really an outstanding work, the bike was beautiful.

I found the pic/article from last years booklet...

Pretty nice for a "from scratch" project, eh?

Hey Lancer, that sounds like a very interesting project. You will probably want a fairly decent thickness before you take the grinder to it.  I sense it is going to be a labour of love. Keep us posted on your progress.

Wow, looks like a major project. Figure out how much money you think it will take, then double it, figure how much time it will take then triple it. It's always worked for me. Keep us informed on how it is going. Really like that early Duck racer, red is such a nice color.

Definitely a cool idea. I hope it works out.  How much do you think it will end up costing?

Lancer- now that's an interesting project.  Out of curiosity, are you eyeballing the size or do you have measurements of a BSA race tank, or giving it the style but measured for your savage?  And of curse/ er course, I wonder what capacity you might end up with.

lancer:  I'm changing the look of my ls also...moved the seat up and back and really want to change the shape of the tank...there is a blacksmith (!) here in town that will do anything with metal cheap.  I'm thinking of asking him to make a sort of a sleeve or pocket that would slip over the tank...would look similar to yours...I just don't want to make permanent changes in case i f--k everything up.   Good Luck!

I was wondering about the final tank volume, and with the questions you'al are asking I decided to do a little measuring.  The foam block is about the size of the original racing tank (from memory...I do not have one on hand to work with), based on the one I had on my Goldstar before.

This block is   10.5x12.5x16.5=2165 ci

Removal...

The tunnel ...400 ci
The corners..450 ci

Shape left over has about 1315 ci

A gallon takes up about 220 ci

1315 divided by 220 = 6 gal

Now I like those numbers!!!

Now that sounds like a nice number!

That's very cool stuff.  Be sure to keep us updated.

Maybe you could keep track of the mold dimensions, and make some to sell after you've done the proof-of-concept?

This process is a total loss system.  The foam, when carved, is an inside mold that  is totally disolved after the fiberglass work is done.  I am really anxcious to get this going.

You'll be a pioneer on this project.  Hope it works.  Good luck.

Yeah nice one Lancer go for it.
I had a 5 gallon aluminium tank on My RD350LC, the way a tuned two stroke goes through fuel it needed it.

Now I need to get a  little rasp, I think it will make it easier to do the final shaping prior to getting to the glasswork.

You would not believe the mess this has made in the house..my wife has been VERY GOOD about me doing this inside.  There are millions of tiny foam grains all over the place.....vacuum.........vacuum..........vacuum..........vacuum.....

Just curious- has the tank project tanked?  No biggie- but as I have no experience with this process, I was waiting for an update.  In any case, have a great Christmas.  Your last post mentioned millions of foam grains- I remember them from model railroading days. You must have a VERY understanding wife.

Title: Re: My New Tank
Post by lancer on 12/20/05 at 09:49:01

Ah, yes.  She is a good wife...tempered by over 30 years of bringing my projects into the house to work on.  She likes me near her more than she dislikes the messes  I make.
There is a point of no return of course, and it is WISDOM TO KNOW WHERE THE LINE IS.............................

The tank project is not dead at all, but has been on hold with the extra things that needed to be done for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I have done a little carving on the tank foam and that was done outside this time, and I made that decision because instead of having to spend 30 minutes cleaning up the 100000000000000's of tiny white grains the wind will do it for me out on the deck.
I will post  the next series of pics after Christmas.

Thanks for your interest.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!!!

Looking at your tank sketch it reminds me of the Honda CB450-500-550-750 tanks that I have been researching to see if they might fit on the stock mounts with minimal re-working.  The front mount on the Honda tank measures approx. 3-3.5" close to the stock LS650 mount.  The next big measurement challenge looks to be the rear width of the tunnel, the LS650 I believe is around 6.5" and the CB450 tank looks to measure close to this.

Does any one have access to the Honda CB tanks to see how close of a fit this might be.  At this time I do not have access to tanks to do a trial fitting.

Enjoy the holidays.

The top of the tank is going to be trimmed down a bit, so it will have a sleeker look to it.
