Title: Noisy belt drive when wet
Post by magicfairy on 10/20/05 at 23:05:55

I have a brand new Savage - White 05. Only had it 3 weeks, done 800k.
I have experienced the usual backfire but right from the frist day  I have noticed that when I ride in the rain, the drive belt squeaks. It makes no noise when dry. Is this normal or should I be worried? I did check the tension with the tool that came in the toolkit and it seemed right.
I was going to ask at the dealer (Wellington, New Zealand) when I take it in for first service.

yup, it squeeks in the rain.  may even whine every now and then.  pay mind to alignment after rear cover removal.

My front brake squeaks in the wet just when I start out but I've never noticed my belt squeaking like others have.  Mine's an '88 with 13000 km. Bummer on a brand new bike...can you check alignment?

Not much that you can do about it, try loosening the belt a little. My '02s belt squeeked a bit when I first got it, not as bad now. It should clear up after a few more miles, it's still breaking in after all.

I know there is another topic in here, that discusses this subject....been here done this, but I'm too lazy to find it.  However, I do understand.

There are 2 things that make a belt squeak...

Belt is too tight and squeaks most of the time....

Belt squeaks only in the rain....

Here in Portland I've found that if the belt is adjusted by the 90 degree twist test, that even squeaking in the rain is minimized or eliminated.

I think that Kropachek is the one that introduced us to this adjustment test...put that cute little gage back in the toolkit.  Adjust the belt with the wheel on the ground and with both alignment marks equal.  When you can twist the belt 90 degrees on the lower part, you are ready to ride.

My 05 does it too, maybe its the NZ weather as I live in the Waikato.

Don't worry, I have an '06, and in Puerto Rico, it's mostly 87-90 degrees, and its squeaks only when rains. It's probably the rubber.
