Title: What broke?
Post by Cindi Knox on 09/13/05 at 07:13:21

What parts have actually failed on your Savage?  Battery?  Igniter?  Rectifier?  Coil?  Side stand switch?  Headlight?  Petcock?  O2 sensor?

My starter switch might have been broken.  It looked new when I bought the bike.  Also, me engine was burning oil really bad so I had it overhauled.

My ignition switch died.  Burned up.  After that I added a relay to run things like the horns (FIAMMS), tank bag (mine lights up), etc.

Also, I had the battery's negative post come lose internally from the plates.  During a rally that started in Fort Davis Texas (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=prude+ranch&ll=30.615731,-103.870817&sll=30.615755,-103.870840&spn=0.204624,0.289301&sspn=0.006731,0.009516&t=h&num=10&start=0&hl=en). And I was in the mountains (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=32.953917,-105.705417&sll=30.615755,-103.870840&spn=0.006235,0.009041&sspn=0.006731,0.009516&t=h&num=10&start=0&hl=en).  In the middle of the night.  Between Saturday and Sunday.  And I was riding in the mountains.  With my thumb on the negative post to keep the bike running.

the coil assembly/ignition died on me.  $70 to replace the parts.

After redlining ther bike for 4200 miles in about 4 days, my cam chain tensioner (it's a ltittle spring) also died.  This, however, did not prevent the bike from running, it just ran like crap and wouldn't go over 65.  I "had" to get where I was going, and I pushed it the last 800 miles in 20 hours.  With an hour left, one of my footpegs fell off.  :P

My high/low beam indicator does not work, but who cares?

Uh, I think that's it.

Oh, incidentally, my friend has a suzuki hayabusa, and his cam chain tensioner also broke, but he ended up bending a valve stem pretty good and chipping a starter motor gear, if I recall correctly.

WD:  How did your calipers break?

my chain tensioner broke before i bought it and then i was always wondering why it was so loud and sounded like the chain was slappin in it heh.  Uh then one day it died and it broke my chain, bent my valves and ect.  I had to get the whole top rebuilt. Expensive!!!  Oh well besides that its still a great bike.

Only thing I could say has genuinely broken down is the plug lead.....so far....

other than normal wear items - the blinker relay - dead short blew the 20amp fuse, and the mirrors got to rattle'n so loud i replaced them.

One of the cylinder head cover bolts broke while I was torquing it down.  It wasn't even close to the required torque yet either.  Luckily, after removing the cover, about 2mm of it protruded from the head such that I could grasp it with longnose vise-grips and back it out a bit at a time.

I've also replaced the battery with an Odyssey, although stock batteries should almost be considered consumables like brake pads, lightbulbs, tires, oil filters, etc.

Replaced the starter relay once. Unnessessary because the battery connection turned out to be loose.
Apart from changing the brakepad for and aft and the reartire that was worn (knok on wood)

NOTHING

Simple, the caliper seals ruptured.

started drive gear broke and busted crankcase, had the crankcase welded over 3 years ago, cam chain tenisioner, guide and chain, rear drive sproket, (worn uneven caused a loud squeal), grips, (wipe out), other than that just regular replacement of tires, brakes, etc.

Battery, tires, front brake pads.  But they're all  consumables, so five years or 8,000 miles seems about right.  Nothing else replaced besides upgrades.
