Title: Wandering all over the road
Post by Paladin on 08/28/05 at 18:37:28

I seem to have a problem with getting the Savage to track in a straight line.  It wants to wander all over the place.  Here is an aerial view of last Tuesday commute to and from work (it's only four miles by car) :

Is there a cure for this or is it just some fault of the Savage that I will have to live with?

I have been told by experts that there is simply no immediate cure for this condition. Also, it is not unusual for the condition to worsen considerably before the situation returns to normal, if ever. Go with the flow.  8)

My 87 seems to have the same issue.  Interestingly, it seems to get worse not better with every modification and really got bad last week when I added the S40 Gel Seat.  It has gone as much as 50 miles out of the way on the my trip home...

I'm told the Superbrace improves handling and tracking.  I just ordered one.  I'll let you know if it prevents the wandering you are all talking about.

Makes it worse, can pretty easy double the distance between two points

gosh, i'm glad someone brought this up, i was afraid thumper was the only one that did it, and i would sound stupid asking about it.  also while it's wandering it frequently has to go on reserve,  darn thing.

I too experience this condition, and it seems to be somewhat dependant of the weather. During light fog or drizzle, the wandering is subsided, but on nice sunny days, and especially later in the afternoon, such as leaving work, the wandering is excessive.

Have you checked the steering head bearings?  If they are worn the front end will definitely move around.

Mine has the same problem but I was wondering if it might be temperature related as it seems to occur far more frequently in the Spring and Fall.

hahaha

very cool.

Try running an open header.  That ought to get you to work in the straightest possible line!

Oh my yes!  I have the same problem and it, too, is weather related.  Went home 2 miles for lunch and it took 45 minutes.  Bike just went into the country roads without so much as a by your leave!

I understand the problem, my newspaper is delivered 6 miles south of our home. Sunday it took over an hour to get it and come home.  Some how found I had added over 50 miles to the trip. Was lovely. Only winter weather will fix it and let's hope that is a ways away yet. Was in the high 80' and only a slight south wind yesterday early afternoon. In the 70's today and more of breeze, but still lovely on my trip to town for gas, a PT appointment and the paper. Need to gets lots of miles on before our trip 9/10/05 to Anatone WA and almost 200 miles of twisties and a FSSNOC lunch in the middle of them.  As Polar pilot says, keep the shiny side up. Max

I have noticed the very same problem, as a matter of fact I have had a 5 mile round trip to the store take as much as 2 hours.  I just seems that the roads morphs somewhere between the house and the store.

Strange, I've the same problem with wandering, went out for a gallon of milk at the local store (maybe 2 miles away) ended up riding almost 25 miles. The Superbrace doesn't seem to help at all in fact it makes the bike wander down the back roads looking for twisties. ;D

An old message for our newer members to explain as to why our bikes has trouble to take hours to travel 5 miles.

I believe that it was Einstein who first pointed out to us that a straight line was not the shortest distance between two points, as space was curved.  I know that I personally always try to find lots of curves to get from point A to point B.  Sometimes, it seems to take all day.

I shall name this paladin's theory of anti-reality.  The number of curves between two points varies with the square of sun light.

Mine has the same issue.  Last weekend I went out for a morning cup of coffee and before I new it I was drinking it on the Oregon coast.  :-[ It was a good 80 miles out of the way.  I sure am glad I have the 3.5 gal tank.

I can testify that it's not limited to Savages either.  Fired up the C50 to run down to CycleGear to check out if they had any good deals.  Got there in 1/2 hour or so, stopping for gas.  On the return trip however, I seem to have misplaced my sense of direction, since it took me 1 1/2 hours or so to get home.  Good thing I'd stopped for gas! :D

This is part of the problem with motorcyces. I explained why I should have one & pointed out the great MPG as part of the reason for it & that was a well made & well received point, when I explained it to the wife. I had no idea I would need to factor in the cost of their incessant wandering. Ive found mine will turn to avoid an intersection that looks like we might get caught at the light & will even go down streets its never been on, apparently hunting some curves to play in. It has sniffed out some really nice little roads around here that seem to need gone down, no matter how out of the way theyare.

Yep, I've found my bike don't save a bit of fuel. And curves,.....thats all there is here. And along w/ the curves, come the Deer,(4 legs) 3 bike/Deer wrecks last week, no dead riders, but 1 dead Deer. I always forget about them, till I remember, then I slow down around the curves,....but only till I forget again. Not a matter of "if", its a matter of "when",....not a good feeling.

Drink less booze before riding.  That does it for me.

People drive their cars places they have to go. They think of places to ride their motorcycles. I have four and most times I think of somewhere to go it seems I must take my S40 and leave the others at home.

Wandering? Must be Yankee Lingo for LOST!...lol

Only bad thing about bikes compared to horses. Turn a horse loose and he will find his way home.
My lil iron horse just aint got no sense of direction and just kinda picks a direction and goes. Gets hard to pull in the reins and point it towards home sometimes.
