I 've heard this a million times but I've got bags on my 2001 but without any brackets or braces..they dont rub or get tangled never had em even close to gettin caught in the spokes or belt . are they really that neccesary?

My guess would be that some bags are just more rigid than others and may need less (or no) support, while others will require it.  The size of the bags is likely a factor too.  I'd bet that larger bags need more support.
