Title: Prayer Request
Post by lancer on 08/14/05 at 20:43:25

For those of you who believe in prayer, I have a request.  This morning while walking out the door on our way to church my wife did a full forward flip/nose dive down  the stairs from the front deck (about 12 steps ).  She somehow was able to avoid hurting our 6 year old grandson who was in front of her but she did not fare as well.  After a trip to the emergency room we found that her right leg/ankle was broken in 3 places and the ankle/foot was completely dislocated.  She will need to wait a week for the swelling to subside before going in for surgury to screw everything back together.  After that there will 2 months before she can begin to put her foot down, so we are looking at about 4-5 months before she is walking  again.
If you would, please pray for a speedy recovery and for relief from pain.  Right now she is existing on morphine and is still in a lot of pain...a little goofy sometimes but she still hurts a lot.
Thank you

Lancer:

darn!  Sorry to hear of your wife's accident. Glad she is going to be ok.
My first thought was perhaps a head injury, until i read on.  I realize the leg/ankle is serious enough, but thank god that was the extent of it.  Glad the little fellow wasn't hurt also. Must have frightened him though.
I will say one for her (if he still listens to me). Wish her a speedy recovery, and be patient with her through the physio therapy.  Gonna be a rough ride, but you have each other. That's the key.

cheers

Michael

When the AA talks about taking the 12 step program they do not mean head over heels.

Best wishes for a full recovery.  And kudos on taking a worse fall to avoid hurting a child.

I'm not a prayer person, but on occassions I have asked for help from my long departed father, (is that prayer), it seems to work.

So I will do so again for your wifes speedy recovery.
Please keep us informed of her progress.

While I'm somewhere along the lines of Michael and Sluggo, I'll certainly give it a shot.  Best  wishes on a speedy and I hope it's less painful than it could be.

Thank you very much for the prayers and good thoughts.  This will be a very difficult time for several months for my wife, and will consume a great deal of my time from now on so my internet play time will be extremely limited.

darn, Lancer.  That's horrible.

My mother broke her ankle a few years back.  Recovery was slow and painful -- but it was a full recovery.  One day this will be just a nasty memory for your wife.

Sending hopes for a speedy, relatively pain-free recovery to your wife, and good thoughts to you and the rest of your family.

From a black sheep in faraway Chile, who doesn't believe in God or anything like that, my heart goes out to you, your wife and your family.

As other said, one good thing is that she did not hurt your grandson, that would have been even worse.

Just for what it means, I was on a wheelchair for one month and on crutches for another two, but I eventualy went out good.

Take care of your wife and yourself.

Best,

RW

Lancer- my wife is just finishing up her first week after foot surgery- probably 3 more weeks before she can start  using her foor again, and then heel only.  If your wife is an active gal, as mine is--well, many prayers offered.  As my wife's sugeon put it elevation is your best friend.  Keep the foot up, and your spirits also--bestluck to her and you.  ps- you will need crutches, wheelchair, ice packs, and lots of patience.and of course- LOVE ;)

She is a trooper...doing pretty well considering.  She had an appointment with the orthopedic surgeon today to see if the swelling was going down enough to have surgury on Tuesday...doc says it looks like she is good to go.  Reporting  at 1000 hrs Tuesday morning for a 1200 cut time.

PRAYER WARRIORS,  PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK IN PREPARATION FOR TUESDAYS SURGURY.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP.

GOD BLESS YOU.

Beverly is resting relatively comfortably, considering the situation.  Surgury scheduled for Tuesday morning around 10-12 am.

I am working on a wheelchair ramp to get in/out of the house so I do not have to roll her down the steps...she does not want to play on the steps any more...

Thank you  again for your prayers, it is making a significant difference...God is faithful as always.

Have blessed days.

Did the Ramp and Handrail bit at the In-Laws:  Pix (http://www.dslretorts.com/Paladin/images/ramp.jpg) Pix (http://www.dslretorts.com/Paladin/images/handrail.jpg) Pix (http://www.dslretorts.com/Paladin/images/ramp-handrail.jpg)

The inside ramp is 1:12 slope, which is the recommended maximum slope for wheelchair ramps.  The outside is 1:6 because of the wall at the bottom of the steps.  The handrails are stocked at the Home Depot along with the handrail brackets.  I also picked up a studfinder so that the handrail brackets are screwed into wall studs.  The Bathroom rails are interchangeable left/right.   Gene says they made life a lot easier.

FWIW, I carried that 5 foot outside handrail on the Savage, which got comments in the parking lot about carrying a lance, which led to a certain avatar.

My F-i-L, Gene, also biked; dirt, some street.  Still has his XT600 in the Garage.  Hasn't been able to kick start it for years.  Can't even climb and sit on it anymore.  Non-biker family thinks he should sell it.  They don't understand that the little money it would bring is worth far less than looking at it and remembering the rides.

Post by lancer on 08/21/05 at 13:16:06

Thanks for the tips but I am good to go in that area, I spent quite a few years in the building trades after I left the military, before the medical issues took me out of the work force for good.

The ramp I put together is set at a 3/12 slope...yes it is a bit on the steep side but the space and material on hand made it necessary.  It will work for the temp time we need it.

I am seriously considering just selling this house and finding/building another one that is more along the line of a handicapped friendly home.  My father-in-law built a home that was designed from the get-go as a handicapped friendly home, and I really liked the way the space was used and set up.    It looked every bit like any new home but the little details that made it H/C friendly were just really nice and practical.

Thanks again for the thoughts and prayers.

THE SURGURY IS OVER!!

I just talked with the doctor, the surgury went very well and she did just fine.  She will be up in her room in about 30 minutes.  I am typing this from a computer in the outpatient surgury waiting area...this is nice to have a computer to use while waiting here.
The doc put 2 screws in the inside of the ankle  and a long narrow plate with 6 screws on the outside of the ankle/leg.  He said she will DEFINITELY set off the metal detectors at the  airport now.  She will be here overnight and then go home tomorrow...if all is well of course.
Thank you so much for your prayer and support to this point, and I ask for continued prayer  as she heals and then starts therapy in a couple of months.

Great news Lancer. I will continue to pray for you both, you'll need some prayers too. My hubby, Mr. Super-Paratrooper broke his ankle before we married, 37 yrs ago and finally after 3 operations had screws put in to fuse it. He said he should have had that done the first time. Walks with no pain now, first time in 30 years. But speaking from experience, you'll be worn out from doing little extras you never thought about before. We found that a plastic tie up trash bag around the ankle works well for taking a shower when you get that far along.

Heh, my stepfather has a prosthetic leg.  He hates the handscanning crap so he always stops, pulls his leg off, lays it on the conveyor belt and hops through the arch.  You should see the looks he gets.
