Title: Ideas for Next Group Ride
Post by Susan on 07/13/05 at 09:47:16

We had Mountain Day and Lake Day, what's next?

I was thinking it would be neat if people who could, got to gather to meet and ride on a regional basis. Something like "The Annual Savages Meet, Greet and Ride".

I know there are other riders in PA that I could meet up with (tri-state area too possibly). We also have concentrations of riders in Texas and the Northwest. In some locations we may just have 2 riders who can get together but that would be worth it too. We could start regional threads to see who could meet up. For those of you truly out there by yourselves, maybe we can arrange an online "get-to-know-you" event of some sort.

I know Sluggo and Greg already met as have some of the Texas riders but I'm betting it might be fun to do it again and maybe meet some new faces too.

In PA, I would be willing to coordinate the ride, including a follow up BBQ if folks are interested.

Whatcha think?

Great idea. I'm in the southeast, and I know that other people in Georgia have Savages, 'cause I've seem 'em. Are they members??? Anybody here from GA?

If so, I would love to do the Dragon's Tail (300+ curves in 11 miles) on the Savage or anywhere in the middle Georgia area would be great too.

i live in michigan, and i think it would be cool to cruise wit you guys, and the BBQ idea dont sound half bad.  any one in  mi, in or ohio, i love riding my bike, so i can come to you.  if not, i will throw my bike in the truck and run the dragons tail for grins and giggles

I like this idea. I'm in East central Illinois. I don't know how many riders from this area are on the forum, but something toward north central Illinois might catch the suburb riders. Maybe Starved Rock. Then ride along the Illinois River.

You are OC, I'm SB.  We have Kyle in the SFV and Joel in LB.  Four Savages rolling into a Harley hangout would be awesome.

I'm in Northeast GA.  Trouble is, I'm not sure if I have the skill or experience level for Tail of the Dragon; and I haven't yet been on the interstate.  (Probably slightly frustrating for any experienced rider I tag along with. :P )

I would have suggested North Georgia, up in the mountains -- maybe Dahlonega or, even better, the Chatahoochee National Forest.  All back roads and county highways, and nice scenery.

But having said that, have you ridden the Tail of the Dragon before?  Does it require any kind of advanced skill level, or are you fine if you know how to countersteer, look through the turn, and you don't speed?

Title: Re: Ideas for Next Group Ride
Post by Paladin on 07/13/05 at 19:38:43

Ain't been there, but I just Google'd it up.  It is SR115/US129 bordering the Great Smokey Mountains Nat'l Park.  Take it at or below posted speeds and you'll have NO problem.  It also looks to be some awesome scenery.

Any experienced rider will never be frustrated by the hesitation of a new rider.

You are right about that Pal, there is nothing better than helping someone new to motorcycling learn how much fun it really is.
I am in central South  Carolina, and if I am not mistaken there are at least 2 other members in the state.  If we can get together with the folks in Georgia we could have a real GANG RIDE.
This sounds like a good plan to me.......when are we going to do this?

done the dragon a few years ago on a GL 1100 int. with the SO on board. SO got a little motionsickness, didn't bother me. even with over 50 years on two wheels, I sure don't consider myself ANY kind of expert. I just rolled through all 318 curves rather gently (got that T shirt) and let all those crotch rockets bombs fly by.  I'm open for that PA. ride and BBQ. Bill aka diesel in Watsontown.

Lancer, you're only about an hour away from my aunt.  She's in Batesburg-Leesville.

All right, ya know what?  I'm starting to think that I'm always going to be intimidated by the Tail of the Dragon -- that is, until I actually ride it for myself.  So I may very well take a whack at it, if the GA/SC group ride comes together and that's where folks want to go.

One last question about the TotD -- am I guaranteed to scrape the footpegs on those curves, or do I have to take the curves pretty hard to do that?  (I've only done it once so far, in a really tight u-turn -- by accident.  ::) )

I'd probably want to make it an overnight thing at least, in case I find I'm not up for riding all those miles in one day (to the Dragon, riding the Dragon, and then back home from aforementioned Dragon).  This is because I'm a newbie and a wuss.  ::)

Hmm.  Labor Day is September 5th.  So how about the following weekend?   Maybe around Saturday the 10th?  (Can't do Labor Day weekend at all -- that's my wedding anniversary.  Hubby'd be miserable.)

Deb, if the Tail of the Dragon ride happens, I don't think it's that far from you.  It's a stretch of US 129 at the TN/NC state line -- might be about an hour and a half away from Knoxville, if even that far...?

Of course, not far from the TotD is the Cherohala Skyway, if anyone's interested in doing that along with/instead of the TotD?  That looks like a really pretty ride.

Karen,

I am no expert either. I am a little intimidated about the Tail as well, but I heard it was a BLAST from my brother (he rides a 2004 Suz Volusia). I would love ANY ride ANYWHERE. Maybe we could meet up one day and ride. Just let me know.

I like the idea of the week after Labor day.
Let's see if we can get some traction on this with the others in the area.  With this being within riding range of parts of 3 states it should be a lot of fun.

I know there are a couple of us in Alabama...I'm near Birmingham, and I know Slopoke lives down near Montgomery.  There must be others in the area too.  I could see us meeting the GA folks, but it'd HAVE to be an overnight for me to make the TotD ride.   There are a few folks up in TN too, though not sure where.  How about a meeting in Chattanooga?  I'm looking for a relatively central location where several of us could all meet.  What say you?

Hmm.  If everyone near there does attend, we'll have people from Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.  So we'll be coming from all directions surrounding the TotD.  Perhaps the most central location is near the TotD itself?  I'd also be making it an overnight trip (I might make a weekend out of it, in fact).  Perhaps once we each know where we're staying, we can figure out a meeting place from there?

And what are everyone's thoughts on TotD/Cherohala Skyway loop?  The Cherohala's not far from there -- it's 36 miles long, over a mountain -- beautiful scenery, with places to pull over for pictures, etc.

http://www.tailofthedragon.com/dragon_loop.html

If you guys want to do the loop, perhaps Robbinsville, NC might be a good place to meet?  (I'm being a safety geek here -- since we haven't ridden together before, I'm thinking it's easier to ride together if we get pretty close to the destination on our own first, at our own respective paces.)

The Tail of the Dragon is a great ride...we did it 2 years ago.  However, if I could offer a word of advice, don't choose a day that is a major holiday.  On days like that it is a mad house....check this picture.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b277/gmdinusa/DealsGap02web.jpg
This is Deals Gap which is on the NC side of the Tail.  As you can see it is packed.  On Memorial Day everyone with a sports car or a sport bike will be there, and trust me, no matter how well you ride, you will be too slow for them.  Someone will be riding up your butt constantly...or passing you in your lane...or in blind curves.  It is a total mad house with sport bikes actually teasing the cops into chasing them.  Why?  Because it is 11 miles with no side roads or intersections, and the only time your bike is vertical is between left and right turns....just what Mr. Joe Rocket wants  :P

When we rode it, I happened to notice that my normal speed was a mere 35 mph through most curves and I was often dragging my pegs :)  However, the sport bikes were dragging their knees at nearly twice that speed and passing us.  It was like finding ourselves in the middle of a super bike race.  Here is where a lot of the bikes end up too.....so pick an off weekend and have fun.

I'd say that those that are closest to TotD should pick a day that they want to ride it (heeding Greg's advice) and announce a date.  Then those of us that are near enough to attend will arrange to show up.

Hey Sluggo, Max, WD and Chris!  How about a ride to Mt. Rainier on Labor Day weekend?

I'm thinking about a meet and greet on Sunday around 12:00.  We'll make a weekend out of it.  Ride up on Sat.  Meet on Sunday.  Ride back on Monday....

How about the Sunrise area?  This is where you can find us.

Okay -- so far, it seems it's Mark (who came up with the Dragon idea -- look what you started! ;) ), Lancer, me and Gandalph riding (or at least attempting to ride) the Tail of the Dragon.  :)

Deb, if you'd be up for it, you might actually be closest to the Dragon -- one end of it is in eastern Tennessee, the other end in western North Carolina.

Lancer, I know you said the week after Labor Day worked for you.  How's Saturday, September 10th sound to everyone (including anyone else who wants to join in)?

Let's do hold the 10th of Sep as the tentative date and see how this starts to gel.  If a problem begins to develope (like another hurricane perhaps) then we can fine tune it down the road a bit.

Angel Crest highway looks cools. But it depends on what day we going to this. Is there crazy rocket-riders on that day too? Okay, I heard that on every Sunday, lots of want-to-be racer hotdogging on these twisty roads :o

Title: Re: Ideas for Next Group Ride

It will be a Saturday and any idiots exceeding the speed limits on their imitation race bikes only impress me as to the degree of stupidity that exists in the world.  They only have minor entertainment value and are easy to ignore.

In 40 years in SoCal I have yet to ride/drive the Crest.  It will be a new experience for me and I intend to mosey along enjoying the scenery.   I am capable of slowing down to run at another's pace.  No one and nothing can make me go faster than I wish.  The mule is an admirable animal.

My tenative plan is breakfast in La Canada at a suitable cafe that serves eggs/sausage/etc. with a pot of coffee and ceramic cups -- I don't do styrofoam.  Start the run 9:30-10am.  A leisurely ride along SR2/SR138 to Cajon Junction, about 2.5 hours according to Yahoo Maps, add in a photo stop or two, and it will be a late 1pm lunch before heading back home along Cajon Blvd/Devore Rd and haven't looked further.

If the TOTD comes together I will be there.  Will probably trailer a good part of the distance.  As I suspect that you all know, there are several establishments in close proximity to TOTD that have overnight accomodations.  If you can arrange it, you would probably want to spend more than one day in the area. Just my point of view since I am coming from flatland USA.

Title: Re: Ideas for Next Group Ride

Mark: The first Saturday after the 22nd is the 24th.
I can do either the 10th or the 24th.  It's up to everyone else who wants to go -- which date is better?  (Or does anyone have any other suggestions?)

Red2k1:  I think a couple of us are thinking of staying more than one day.  Seems they have everything there from inexpensive motels to all-out resorts within a half hour of the Dragon.  Not sure yet where I'd be staying; I want to see if hubby can make the trip also (if nobody minds a Yamaha V-Star tagging along. :) )

Since I'm sure we all have our own individual tastes in lodging, I'd guess it's probably a good idea for us to each make our own arrangements separately, and then meet up the day of the ride.

All the info I've found has been at www.tailofthedragon.com (click "Accomodations" at the top of the page).

Update: It seems there's a Triumph owners gathering at the Dragon September 23-25.  Don't know how much that matters to anyone...?  Will it be packed, will it be difficult to get rooms, etc...?  Any thoughts?

Arrgh....  I was planning on Sept. 10th, the weekend after the labor day weekend.  Next weekend is not doable as I am in the middle of putting a new liner into the above ground pool.  I'm not going anywhere for at least three weekends.

:D this sounds great!!  An Ohio-PA ride and/or the ToTD could be doable.  Hubby and I had talked about going to Chattanooga so ToTD with all of you sounds awesome.  Of course like Karen, my hubby would probably ride along, Boulevard C50T.  Can probably make any weekend work out after Labor day.

Tentatively either 10th or the 24th are OK with me too.  I can't firmly commit, because things might come up that prevent me from making it, but I'm ok with either date as of today.

I'm not sure what to say about the Triumph group being there on the 24th.  I mean how many folks could they bring?  Bottom line is:  We'll have to pick a date/time, departure point, and ride route.  (I'd like to do the whole loop with TotD and Cherohala Skyway, as long as we're there.)

If we end up picking another date and I can't be there, it's OK.  But, I've spent a LOT of time on the TotD website also.  A little intimidating...but veeeeery exciting.

Tom

Title: Re: Ideas for Next Group Ride
Post by Karen627 on 07/18/05 at 08:43:39

The Triumph thing the weekend of the 24th might be a blessing in disguise -- if there are more bikes, then that means more traffic on the Dragon, which means slower rides.  Good for those of us who are intimidated. ;)

Okay, Mark, Lancer, Tom, Red2k1, Paula:  This obviously isn't set in stone, but as of right now it appears so far that the 24th is the first choice, the 10th the second choice.  If most of us can do the 10th, we'll do the 10th -- if most of us can do the 24th, so be it.  Unless anyone else has a better date in mind?

Tom: yeah, the Cherohala looks amazing.  From what I understand, it's not another Dragon.  Although it might have one or two curves you have to watch out for, it's mostly just a regular road -- but with amazing scenery.

And Deb, if you're in Eastern Tennessee you'd probably have the easiest trip of all of us, if you're still interested. ;D

OK...my last question for today...do we want to start in Robbinsville or someplace else?  I'm going to start trying to get a room somewhere...I've seen the recommendations on the TotD site, but if anyone that's been there has any recommendations, I'd love to hear them (especially "don't stay at this place" recommendations).

Tom

Title: Re: Ideas for Next Group Ride

I'm partial to the Robbinsville area myself -- it looks like the mid-point between the Dragon and the Cherohala, and from what little I can tell, it seems to have more options for lodging.  (I could be wrong about that, though.)

Gas up in LaCanada, it's only about 80 miles to the I15.  The last time I rode with anyone was on dirt bikes in the '70's.  Allegedly there are services along the way, bars and such.  Unless something more important comes up 10/10 is a go for me.  Something important would be teenaged daughters.  Executive Support for SBC is not important.

Man i wanna go because it would be so kewl to meet all of ya and ride. but my god my butt goes numb after 30 mins on the road let alone like 3.5 hrs.   I would be fun tho and IM still debating.  I think torque wants to go and maybe lancer. hmmm  read this

The most infamous Triumph event in the country? In the world? Even Speed Channel had to come see what all the fuss was about last year and they left with the best Corbin’s Ride On segment of the year. And those are their words, not ours. The Dragon RAT raid just gets better and better every year. Quite possibly the best motorcycle riding in the East, the area features the legendary Dragon and it’s 318 curves in 11 miles. Traverse between the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, part of the Appalachian Mountains on one side, and the Little Tennessee River with the Fontana Dam, Calderwood Dam, Cheoah Dam, and the Chilhowee Dam on the other. There isn’t a bad road within a hundred miles for cruising in the back country and taking in the sights. Join RAT on Saturday night for all of the festivities including live blue grass music, pig roast, proper British beer, RAT awards, raffles, and more! And don’t forget your kilt! A tradition of honor and bravery is to wear a kilt to the party at the Dragon on Saturday night. Just remember, if you wear something under your kilt, it’s just a skirt!

i wonder if speed channel will clock us going 30mph?  And here are the Suzuki Savages wiping up the rear end haha.

All right, then: so far two of us have said yes to September 24th (assuming no other commitments).

So, RockyRoad, JimR, Mark (who first suggested it), Lancer, Red2k1, and Paula (and anyone else) -- if you're all still interested, does the 24th work for you?

Deb, if you read this, we'll be pretty close to eastern TN if you want to come along.

And just a note here: when we do this, I say we all wear whatever we like.  We ride Savages/S40's -- we have no kilt requirement.  (Unlike a certain other bike...)  :o ;D

:DYes, the 24th sounds good so far, planning on it.  It will be a 6 hour ride out, anyone in Ohio/Kentucky wanting to ride, maybe we can meet up along the way?
Have had a few suggestions to trailer :o

lets see we had the mountain ride in june, the lake ride in july, hopefully the full moon ride on the 19th of aug.

so whats the theme of this ride.  ???

Just a heads up for anyone wanting to make reservations: I think the Triumph kilt-wearing folk will be staying at the Tapoco Lodge in Robbinsville, NC -- at least, that's where they've stayed in the past; seems they got something like 85 bikers showing up at a past event.  So I don't know what that means for vacancies at the Tapoco.

Otherwise, I think the Robbinsville area might be a good idea for a starting point, unless anyone prefers the Tennessee end of the Dragon?

It seems to be the Twisty Ride.  The Tail of the Dragon is  318 Curves in 11 Miles.  I'm taking the Angels Crest Highway which greets you with this sign:

I am REALLY dissappointed that I will miss this ride.  Before Beverly dove down the steps and busted up her leg I was planning out my routes (several in and out of the area...I was going to make a week of it) and looking up the area hotels.  She had airline reservations to go to see the new grandbaby and was set to leave on the 8th of Sep and return on the 22nd.  That would give me all the time I needed to ride anywhere I wanted and stay as long as I wanted....but now we are both homebound for about 5 months.
By the way, she just came out of surgury about 15 minutes ago and everything went just fine.
So, I cannot go but I do wish all of the rest of you a great ride...have fun and remember those of us who are stuck at home watching TV and emptying bedpans.

It will be nice when everything is confirmed to put a separate topic with final announcement. I don't think Iwant to miss a ride like this and if I am alive and in a good health, I'll come from Az.

Lancer, it's a shame you won't be able to make it.  And the reason you're missing it makes it a double shame.  I'm glad to hear surgery went well.

We'll remember you -- but we may try to forget the bedpan part, if that's all right...  ;)

I'm from Bonaire Ga. right below Warner Robins and I would like to get in on the ride also. I am a new rider but it seems like alot of fun. I know quite a few riders with crotch rockets that have been to the Tail of the Dragon and they really enjoyed it. Plus it is more pretty than Mid Ga.

Then hop aboard. ;D

A few of us have said we can do the weekend of the 24th, and hubby and I went ahead and booked a room for that weekend regardless of whether the Savage ride is confirmed for that date, since it's the only weekend the hubby and I were able to both get off work anyway.

I figure even if the Savage/S40 group Dragon ride has to be re-scheduled, at least hubby and I will get a weekend in the mountains.  But I don't know if anyone else has been able to "officially" confirm that date themselves yet, though, so as far as I know, it's still subject to change if others decide a different date is more convenient.

Did that make sense? ???

SAVAGE STURGIS

While simultaneously enjoying a favorite brew and surfing Google this notion came to mind:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Sturgis,+MS&spn=0.140027,0.144161&hl=en

Also the Nachez Trace Parkway runs by just a few miles away, Sturgis being almost 1/2 way up the Parkway.

http://www.nps.gov/natr/index.htm

Well looks like the HD folks just had a small rally at that one too.

It was about 103* just after noon here in the pits Sunday (anyone who watched the NHRA race here Sunday knows) August is not the time to do something like that, but I would say maybe October would be better.

I'll be near Fontana Dam.  I think it's the same end of the Dragon as Deal's Gap.

There are a whole bunch of places that sell Dragon t-shirts.  I plan to stop in every freakin' one of them -- that is, after I've actually ridden it.  ;)  (I think it's considered bad luck to wear the shirt before you do the ride.)

I honestly don't know at this point.  It's roughly 215 miles to Talihina for me, so maybe a 4.5 hour ride, including fuel and rest stops.  I know I want to do it.  Taking care of business at home and work may not allow a full weekend away though.  I just can't predict that far into the future at this point.

When I was in Bahrain in the early/mid 80's they didn't even fly the ensign at the US compound they maintained.  It was extremely small and basically the only reason anyone went there was the mini exchange or the Navy Federal Credit Union.  For a beer, you had to go to the Hilton.  The Stark relieved us on station in the Gulf of Oman and was shortly afterward hit by an Exocet.  We were just about to refuel and take on stores in Sri Lanka.  I don't envy you.  That sand is like talc and gets into everything.  I bet it'd be hell on a bike's air filter.  I know it was on the ship's filters - even in the center of the gulf.

That'd be great!  I once filled out a chit to enable me to attend jury duty in San Antonio.  Then, when it was denied, I sent a copy of it back to the Bexar County courts and told them to talk to my skipper.  I never got any more jury duty notices from them.
