Do you use Regular or High test? I've been using high test because it inhibits carbon accumulation better. 8)

Personally, I haven't seen regular since the early 80's.  All we have is unleaded.  In this area I believe it's available in 87, 89 and 93 octane.  I just use 87 octane.

BTW, this board is for technical documents only.  This post should be in the Rubber Side Down board.

Unleaded
Super Unleaded
Premium

I personally only use Unleaded  ;D

High octane. 91-93 by current rating.

I have run a couple tanks of aviation fuel through my 98. The bike likes it, but, the high cost of av gas isn't worth it.

I like 91-93 octane premium fuel.  My bike may not always NEED premium but there are times when engine temperature may get a bit high, due to weather or hard riding, and at those times premium is needed to avoid detonation.

Cheapest stuff I can get.  Bike never complains.  Only use super unleaded in the 99 supercharged mustang and the 65 Buick, as they would detonate on 87.

I have tried a bunch of them.
It will detonate some in the heat of summer no matter what is in there if it's hot enough, and for an extra quarter why not fill it premium.
Regular 87 octane runs fine in cooler weather.
I have noticed that in some areas ethanol is coming back as a blend. Alcohol can be harder on fuel delivery components, but w/ a 3 gal. tank. "beggars can't be choosers".

Doesn't matter what you run. Add some 2 stroke oil...or else.  >:( Mikuni CV carbs aren't worth the hassle to remove and beat to pieces with a hammer.  >:(

--- 2 stroke oil or Marvel Mystery oil. I like the 2 stroke oil better. Mikuni CV carbs are junk!  Get an Edelbrock carb from Lancer.

which oil smells the best?
I always liked Klotz.

Castrol TTS - real lite dose - maybe 1/2-1oz every 300-500 miles (once week for me) must have a little perfume

I use the 93 octane along with the 104 octane boost additive. That bike really gets up and goes!!!  The cars behind you will stay real far away when they see the backfire after you let off the throttle! Get a Jardine pipe and it's even better!! ;D

Lancer is a member of this board.  If you look to the begining of this particular thread you will find him.

How much 2 stroke oil would you add to a full tank of gas? Any suggestions on brand?

1/2 oz castrol TTS is what i feed mine every 300-500 miles - some think it's not needed but i think it keeps the slide working better in the carb - and keep the clamps tight on the intake and airbox to keep unfiltered air out -

I have a turbocharged mustang and I have done alot of research on the "what fuel to use" subject. From what ive seen it is best to use the lowest octane you can without getting any pre-ignition.

In newer cars too low of octane will actually take away a LOT of power because they have knock sensors that retard timing and richen the mixture IF and when it senses knock (pre-ignition). But these bikes dont.

The lower octane burns faster, easier, hotter and more completley. There for having better emissions and less carbon build up. That is why engines with really high compression or forced induction can not use it. It will ignite just from the exreme heat from the high cylinder pressures, before it is supposed to. (pre-ignition)

I dont want to step on any toes but if you put race gas in your stock savage and think it is faster its probably just the smell of it getting to your head.  ;D

BP/Shell backfired more on  than Mapco.
There is a difference in the power pump gas and VP race gas will make. The stock 396 elCamino and my lawn mower both liked the the low end VP Red.
If you are only looking to replace lead for valve protection 5 gal of Red in a 20 gal. tank, topped off w/ premium pump gas, will get you back to 60's level lead content and run better than pump gas. A 50/50 mix runs even better in the 396.
I agree that octane should match compression. I suspect Red will add easy 2-3 mph to a stock Savage's top end, vs. pump gas.
