I'm interested in putting a savage engine into a standard frame. I have a 650 Triumph frame, but I'd prefer to use something japanese, like an early GS550.

I'm also curious about how much power one of these engines could make. I'm figuring on using a low-restriction muffler (or none at all), and from what I've seen on this site, a 38mm mikuni is the way to go.

Anyone ever done anything like this? I'd love to hear from you.

Type the name "Snorton" into your browser. Savage engine in Norton featherbed frames.

Thanks for your reply. I googled "snorton" and got a link for something called "Thunder Road". When I click the link, all I get is a search site with a Ducati (yuck) and a girl with her boobies showing.

Any chance this place is defunct?

That site has been down for years, but they took Savage engines modified the exhaust and car as I remember and dropped it in a Norton Frame. Gave you a standard bike with great handling and a dependable engine. Actually Suzuki back in history made a "Tempter" (and yes they have used the name on twin cylinder versions) with the 650 engine. My desktop picture indicates it was a 97 domestic use model only. But it is a neat looking machine. Wish I knew someone in Japan who could arrange the export of one. Max

Okay, please pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't it be simpler and cheaper to modify an existing Savage?

Is there something here that I'm missing? If you want less rake, couldn't that be done by a good welder for a few hundred bucks? A couple of cuts, some welds, then maybe a few tube gussets and more welds. That can't be more than a couple hours work. You could do the cuts on your own, and take the frame to the welder afterwards. Right? Or not?

Would the LS motor fit in a TZR250 aluminium beam frame ?, nice and light + much improved handling and braking.

My hope was ultimately to get an aftermarket Featherbed frame and go with that, since prior to posting here, I didn't know anyone had ever done this. I was working with what I had laying around, because I didn't want to sink a ton of cash into a dead-end. But because these frames are available for less than 2k, now I'm REALLY curious to talk to anyone who's done this, since it's obviously possible.

To back up a bit, cutting and rewelding a savage frame would not yield the level of handling I'm interested in; the featherbed frame was a legendary racing item. I wonder, though whether similar results could be expected with the Savage engine in place, since according to what I've read, part of the reason they handled so well was due to the massive flywheels on the original engine being set low in the frame.

Geez, normally I'm fairly internet savvy, but I can't seem to locate the SavageNorton either. But I found this one.

I suppose this is the direction that I'm trying to take my Savage....Sluggo too, I think.

Time to get back to my springer seat install....
