Title: Trailer to tow a Savage on?
Post by Kyle on 06/09/05 at 07:28:00

Hi ya'll!

I had a hitch mounted on my car and now I'm looking for a trailer
that I can use to tow my '98 Savage on.

I don't want to spend a fortune and the trailer shouldn't be
too big and heavy either, since I'm driving a small sedan and
not a truck or SUV. Just big enough for a Savage.

Any recomendations?

The cheapest option is to get a 4x8 utility trailer and mount a front wheel chock and tie down rings. If you live in the suburbs and don't want an unsightly trailer in your driveway, consider a motorcycle specific single bike trailer. This way you can hide it away somewhere in your back yard or under a porch. Some small trailers even fold up and can hang on a garage wall, but they are expensive with that option.

Thanks for the info.
I should have mentioned that I'm out here in southern California, sorry.
But I don't mind paying for shipping a trailer, if it's not too high.

Here's something I found on eBay. I'm not sure though that
this one's big enough. But the price is right.

The trailer on ebay will fit your Savage. You will have to upgrade to the 8" rail because most Savage tires are 5 1/2" wide. The wheels are a bit small for long distance but a good looking trailer though.

Well, that sounds good!
And their warehouse is only about an hour away from where I live,
so I wouldn't even have to pay for shipping.

Do you have one of those yourself?

No I don't have one like this , but I am always on the lookout for one. I sold my utility trailer that was set up for two street bikes or three dirt bikes several years ago and have regretted it.

Hope you have a pickup, or van, or at least roof racks to pick it up. It sure ain't gonna fit *inside* a sedan ;-)

As far as a truck to pick it up is concerned - that's why you have inlaws, no?  ;D

Here's another trailer I found:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=90154

I seem to remember that they use to sell the rails as well, but I can't
find that option any longer. I would have to get the rails somewhere else.

4' x 8' is a little bigger then I'd like it to be, but it does seem
more appropriate for a Savage, doesn't it? Afterall, the Savage
measures over 7' from front to back tire.

This dealer too has a location not too far from where I live.
That's what you get in soCal - good supply and sh*tty drivers..  :P

The E-Bay trailer lists "Southern California Local Pick-ups  Now Available" and will sell the motorcycle rails and ramp separately.  The 4x8 trailer from Harbor Freight is similar to one I bought at Builders' Emporium about 16 years ago.  Mine came with 4.80x8 tires and I pulled that thing from L.A. to Seatle a couple of time, to Lone Pine many times, and to the Home Depot many times.  I upgraded to 5.??x8 wheels and tires at a WalMart ouside or Reno after I chucked thread.  The 8" is adaquate for sustained 60mph.  I would opt for the 12".

That little folding utility trailer was one of my better purchases.  And the 4x8 size is just right for hauling sheets of plywood.

p.s.  where in SoCal are you?  I'm in Gardena, Joel is in Long Beach.

I too have used the folding type (sometimes known as little red trailer) with good results. Id recommend the 12in tires as well.
I fashioned a ramp out of a 2x12 and 2 2x2 (pressure treated deck rail) along each side. This helps keep you on the ramp!
For the deck I used 5/8 in plywood, a steel wheel chock and a couple of 2x4s bolted through the deck to as a rail on each side of the bike tires.
4 heavy eye bolts though the frame to attach tie down straps, the ratcheting type.
1 word of advice, use zip ties at every connection point where the tie downs hook to the handlebars/frame and the eyehooks. Trust me you dont want a bump loosening the straps and the hook coming undone.
I recall getting several thumbs up from passers by for the Savage in tow!

I live out here in the SFV, just west of the Van Nuys airport.

I like that eBay trailer, since it's a bit smaller and lighter than
that one from Harbor Freight.
I just have a hard time imagening that it's big enough to fit a Savage.
I'm gonna email them to find out if a 7.1' long motorcycle will fit on it.

I did not look at the ebay trailer, but I am using on a regular bases a Harbor Freight one . It is not some marvel, but does an OK job. The biggest bike I have towed in a long distance was a ZX11 towed 130 mi at about 75 mph. No upgrades on the wheels so far.
