Title: WHO ARE WE?
Post by lancer on 05/24/05 at 07:43:41

Most mornings after I get up, I sit in my recliner with my cup of coffee and review what's going on in this part of the world and a few other sites.  Ususally, like today, there are quite a few folks hanging around the site.  I began to wonder about this.  Yea yea, sometimes I just sit around wondering, and occasionally get lost as well.  Anyway, I was wondering if a lot of you frequenting this place are RETIRED, as I am, or are you just really good at managing your time (unlike me) and are able to do this as well as work, and family, and etc.?

Just "work from home" a lot - enough gear around here I can't tell if I'm in the lab or home (my better half does point this out at times as she trips over a stack routers, cat5e/6 cable, and some hard drives! )

Not retired here Lancer got quite a few years yet. I am just now getting into the cycle world, my son is all grown up now and so my husband and I are ready for the road. I found this site and love it , should have learned a lot about my 2002 savage. Everbody I met on here is really great people so I just hang around checking out all the good stuff people like you and other put on here. Drop a line to me anytime.

Very familiar.  Though my day is more like 7:00 to 4:30.   I work at a computer most of the day and am able to bounce over here now and then to see what's up.I am middle-aged ( I think 42 qualifies, maybe not yet, dunno).  I live in Texas and ride to stay as sane as I can.  I'm happily married and raising a 12-year old who think she's a teenager.  Got quite a while 'til I retire.

Nope, not retired and never plan to be.  Started working 30 hours a week whe I was 10 years old, kicked that up to about 70 hours a week when I was 22 and have never looked back.

Also, I am one of those lucky people that needs only 4 hours or less of sleep ever 24 hours or so. In addition, I have computers litterly everywhere (financial necessity), home(several), car, official work, and on my person (although just an e-mail kind of thing).

For me the Savage thing is a nostalgic diversion that has just about run its course (14 months).

Title: Re: WHO ARE WE?
Post by lancer on 05/24/05 at 09:04:51

There is nothing like "raising a teenager" to get you wide awake.  I have past that test 3 times.  Must have done a pretty good job because I like who all of my kids have become...well, I did have some help from  my wonderful wife of 31 1/2 years and especially from God...we could  not have done it without HIM.

I think I need to make a "family tree" of everyone on this site to help me visualize who's who and where everyone is.  I think a poster-like thing of what Paladin has done with his Picture Gallery would be fun.

I am not retired either, but I work 12 hour shifts which gives me a lot of time off. Usually about 15 days a month. I also have a lot of down time at work so the internet combats boredom. Other interests I have are sports. I coach boys (age 12 & 13) baseball.

I suppose I'm middle-aged also.  In fact, I am probably in the midst of the "crisis" ;)  I'm a 41 yr. old homemaker with a 9, 16, and 17 yr. old.  My husband bought a Volusia last year and started 'escaping' the hectic home life for  3-4 hr. vacations and I guess my fear of motorcycles just couldn't outlast my need for the same.  Its summer vacation here - no more frantic breakfasts and screeching trips to get them to school on time for awhile so I goof off on the computer more now.  Glad you all are here!

So, Mike, you like rocks eh?
I keep trying to plan a trip home to see the fam in Henryetta but things keep getting in the way.  Hopefully I will be able to find my way home before too long.  I am looking forward to the possibility of hooking up while there if we can manage it.
Later dude.

I'm middle aged also, if I live to 116.  I hired on with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph nearly 35 years ago and have stayed through several name changes.  I am mister connectivity (http://www.dslretorts.com/Paladin/archives/000049.html), I can provide voice, data, or LAN service anywhere.

For those who have insomnia and need to get to sleep you can read my Blog (http://www.dslretorts.com/Paladin/) which is a mix of personal and work-related blather.

This is the 3rd time I've tried to post this message, so if they all finally show up together - please forgive me.  I'm not sure whether its my computer or the site.

Speaking of rocks, Mike, we have a big rock, mineral, and crystal (fossils too) show (gathering?) at the historical mine just north of us every year - if you like rocks that much  (which I do - now who's the geek?)  It's in Park Hills, MO.  This year its either on the 4th or the 11th - I'm not sure.  Can find out if you're even vaguely interested.

I hope to retire at 60, got 12 years to go. I visit this site nearly every morning & evening, along with the "other" Savage website. I remember when this bike came out & I wanted one ever since. Years of other financial obligations kept pushing back plans & last year I said "I'm 47! Forget the budget for now, IT"S TIME!" Got my S40 & love it! Fortunately, my second wife had no problem with me getting a bike. I told her what Harleys cost! Ride safe.   8)

50.
Columbus, Ohio.
Network Administrator for the VA.
Three Cats.
One Dog.
One Wife.
Two Motorcycles.

Spend my time farting with or riding the bikes,
messing on the PC,
with occasional forays into Photography and guitars.

I think I'm going to roll way back on guitar, since I finf my Carpal Tunnels feel better when I don't play.  I need to save my hands for work and riding.

I'd like to retire now, but got 15 years to go.  Sometimes the govt decides to cut back and provide early outs.  I'd consider it seriously.

I'm all of 32 (but my physical condition says add about 100 years).
Professional scooter trash. Work in a bike shop. For fun I restore, customize, reupholster whatever inexpensive junkheap bike/vintage truck I can get my hands on. Ride every chance I get. Been doing that for the last 18 years, USA and Europe, civilian and military.
I'll retire when the wife has to put coins over my eyes. You know, when I'm dead. Life's too short.

I've owned and sold, traded or had stolen 75 motorcycles. I think I bleed lacquer...

Not retired yet Lancer..I work a 3 shift pattern, 6 to 2, 2 to 10 and 10 to 6, so i have alot of spare time, on my own when my better half is at work, at different times of the day depending which shift i'm on.  :) Also working this pattern i never have to ride in rush hour traffic  :)
but a downside is going out or coming home on cold mornings before sunrise  :(

Thank you for you work at the VA.  With all the physical problems I have to deal with, the VA med facility here in Columbia, SC is more like a second home for me.  There are a lot of really good caring people at the VA that make my life somewhere near normal.  Bless you.  I will pray for an early out for you.

I'm 51 and getting ready to move to Florida in eight days. Worked in the medical field as a biomedical tech on dialysis machines for almost 25 years. Got tired of the rat race after three buyouts in four years and being on call 24/7, all the administration was interested in was cost containment not the welfare of the patient. Would like to retire but can't yet, will look for a job in Florida but want to be an indian not a chief. Own two bikes, a '02 Savage and a '69 Ducati 250. Pets include six parrots, and two dogs, also am a hobby beekeeper with one or two bee hives. Only been riding for a couple of years but love it which is one of the reasons I'm moving to Florida where the weather is more rider friendly. Ride Safe, Ed L.

I'm 41.  I've been married to my husband for 16 years.  We have one 14 year old son and I have a 25 year old stepson.

I've been a systems coordinator in a mental health hospital, physician's assistant and office manager for a surgeon, social assistant and office manager for a psychiatrist, ballistics tester for an armored car company (cool job!) and I'm currently the office manager for the local telephone company.

I have a bit of free time at work, and spend most of my non-riding/non-work time on the computer.  When I'm not rding, working, or surfing the forums, I play "The Sims 2".

I just started riding in September of last year and have only about 2000 miles under my belt.  I love it and regret that I didn't start riding 20 years ago.  I'm a bit of any anomoly in that my husband doesn't ride, nor has he ever...I didn't grow up riding, and no one I know rides.  It's just something I wanted to do for me.

And that's me...

Let me get my 2-cents in also. Bought my first bike (Savage 650) at age 60. Took MSF course in March and been having a blast every day I ride. Will "retire" at 62 officially from my day job. Also have a home restoration biz. Wil not ever stop working.  Bad thing to do. But plan to ride more, kick back some, and travel more.
OK, that's ME.

I'm retired. Worked for "big oil" for 27 years (got paid for 29  ;D) and volunteered for the "package/buyout" when Phillips and Conoco merged. I worked as an accountant, auditor and analyst. Raised two younguns, one lives in New Zealand now. I rode for about 25 years, was without a bike for about 10 years, and got the Savage about a year ago. I have about 2800 miles on it now. Haven't been able to make a trip on it yet but am planning on one the last part of June, possibly to include the Talimena Drive ride with some of the others here. My "job" now is fixing up the "pearl in the rough" we bought. Finishing up what the builder didn't do and cleaning up the 40 acres with it.

Hello all.
At 24, it looks like I'm a young'n here, but hey, we all have Savages right?
I'm a single guy and I live on Vashon Island in the Seattle area, a sweet little place to call home. It's accessible only by ferry, and has some of the best riding around.
I bought my '95 Savage a few months ago. It's my first bike, and I just love it. I'm racking up a little over a thousand miles a month, and starting to feel pretty comfortable and confident riding.
For work, I'm a technology support person(read: please fix my computer mr. Tech guy!!!) and webmaster for a local school district during the school year, and a sailing instructor for a junior learn-to-sail program in the summer months, it makes for a nice balance, and keeps me from getting bored.
For hobbies, I'm a rock climber and hiker, but my real passion is inline marathon racing. I usually skate in 4-6 races a year, and consider myself fairly competetive. It might not be the speed rush of a Motorcycle, but hitting 45 on a good downhill strech with nothing but 10 wheels and a few inches between you and the pavement can make for a good bit of adrenaline. Fruit-bootin isn't all bad
;)

Anyhow, nice to meet all of you, and thanks for the great board.

How much space am I allowed for this?

I am 55, been riding since 1966, and I am an electro-mechanical technician (automation).  My kids, from a former life, are grown and I am free to enjoy doing whatever I want with my present spouse of 5 years.

What matters is that I love bikes.  My past is a  collection that hardly follows any pattern.  They were a Honda Sport 50, a Honda CB360, a Honda XL350, a Yam DT400, 2 Yam DT175s, a Yam IT250, and a Yam XS850 triple.

Currently, I have a green 2000 Savage that I have been compelled to disassemble several times, modify as much as my facilities and finances allow, and if I can ever get past my dilemma with the springer seat installation and the requisition of proper Oregon registration, I'll be riding the darn thing on the Ash Run next month.

I am also guilty of mentoring my spouse in the "way of the force", and therefore purchase a 2001 Savage, as well  8)

Been in civil aviation aviation maintenace for 40 years and made redundant 2 years ago. Due to the decrease in income I was forced to sell  my Audi 80 cabrio.
So I bought the Savage and ride it whenever I can ( wished I had done that long ago). Do my own wrenching.
I do 3 half days work for the community ( not payed) doing small jobs and fixing thing for the elderly people and disabled persons.
The rest of my time is filled with: housekeeping >:(, riding my bike :D, fixing the house :(, riding my bike :D, my hobbies ::) and riding my bike :D.

Dingo,

So, how are the confines of the island?  I mean how large is it and are there enough miles to ride that it does not get repetitive or boring?  I do not remember  much of your island...the name is familiar but I cannot recall anything else about it.  I was stationed on Whidbey Island from 84-87 and often wanted to just go for a drive and get off the island.  Anyway, it is good to hear your story.

I'm 62, have been riding off & on all my life, usually as a passenger. Sold my bikes 15 years ago when health problems looked like I would never be able to ride again. Have 2 daughters (42 & 41)& 2 step-daughters, 6 grandkids, 2 cats & 2 longhorn cows. Outlived my dogs. Am in semi-remission from lupus ,decided to live while I could, first bought a V-Star but gave it to son-in-law & bought the Savage. Love my Savage. My husband, a non-rider, is a great guy, if I have to ride alone will offer to follow me in the pickup in case I have a problem, nix that idea. He calls my bike "garage Art" and has offered to build a frame for it when I go days without riding. Both of my daughters ride, one a 2005 Honda Shadow, the other a 2004 Savage. All my grandkids ride and one of them spent several years on the local Motocross circuit. I am a retired Real Estate Broker, my husband is a building contractor & Master carpenter/cabinetmaker.He was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. We live West of Weatherford, Texas on a small acreage.

Max is a retired auto technology teacher, 62,USN EN2 60-64,  had motorcycles since HS. 4 hp step through Cushman, in college Honda S-65, CA 125 (twin my wife and I rode back and forth from home to college in), pair of ZA-50s. More Hondas post college, CL70, CL100, SL125 (modified for an amatuer trials bike), while in Europe a 250 Triumph in a BSA Frame and a European SL175 twin. Retirement present to myself in 98 was a Yellow 96 Savage. After 1 yr. of retirement my wife expressed a desire to retire early and asked me if I "wanted to move where I could ride more often"? Silly question so in 99 we moved from Anchorage, AK to Moses Lake, WA (that's on the dry side of the state - high irrigated desert). I help my BIL with fixing his farm equipment and drive it during harvest. Just finished cutting 750 acres of Alfalfa hay. Start baling tonight. Have had a series of farm irrigator thumpers I've fixed and sold here at "Thumper Acres". Yamaha BW200, TW200, Honda TLR200. Have a CT-110 to fix now but shop is full of another BIL's ATV, and a Kawasaki Mule that need finishing. Wife doesn't ride but encourages me to. I did most of the shopping and brought it home in saddlebags and a GIVI trunk on my Savage. Also parts runs for the farmer BIL. Been off mine over 2 months as I recover from a ruptured diverticulitis in my colon and resulting septosis and 25 day Hospital stay. Hope to see how I do over the weekend on my Savage. Battery is getting charged as we speak. Life is getting better everyday.

Ouch!  Take care of yourself Max.  I hope you're able to comfortably join your fellow WA thumper riders for the Ash Run.  I know I'm doing everything I can to be able to make the trip from Dallas to Oklahoma/Arkansas that weekend and I just have some slightly torn tendons in my elbow.

Put my behind on a bike-CZ175 when I was 17 and that was it. Changed many bikes since. Still keep my East German MZ ETZ251 on the "other side". I don't even know how many bikes I have now / some of them even run/. I Make my leaving fixing bikes. Will be a pleasure to help a fellow rider.

How to condense this to a readable post...  I'm 37 (38 in July), married, 5 kids (ages 2 to 12).  I buy and sell stuff all the time, as a hobby.  Also have a day job (see below).  Most wonderful wife in the world is a labor/delivery nurse and like to ride bikes as much as me - maybe more.

We currently have 4 bikes in my garage:  98 Savage, 96 YZF600, 2000 Shadow600, and 78 GS1000.  All run great.

We currently have 4 cars in the driveway:  64 Impala, 73 F100, 04 Suburban, 04 Impala.  All run great.

Too many firearms to count - really.  All work great, well the ones I've used anyway.

I love to wrench on cars/trucks/bikes, reload ammunition, ride, shoot, and hang out with the kids (10 yr old is a good rider/driver and an exceptional shot with his Browning Buckmark 22).

The two older kids and I play "shoot the can" with an old daisy red-rider BB gun for hours on the weekends.  Cheap, quiet, harmless fun.  Keeps us skilled at using open sights.

I'm an engineer for GM at the full-size SUV plant in Arlington TX, got 6 good people working for me.  Don't mention firearms at work, it scares the Detroit corporate people.  I guess they never go downtown...I wouldn't go to downtown Detroit without a choice of firearms, all loaded up.

BTW:  Texas Concealed Handgun License is honored and considered legal in Michigan.  Thank you, MI.

It's nice to find so many LS650 devotees. I bought one for my wife's first bike, and tried it out just for fun. I found out that fun was exactly what it was. I have a 1100cc Yamaha myself, which by comparison is like driving a two wheeled car (good for long runs, but not exactly fun). The s40 on the other hand is like the bikes I learned on. Uncomplicated, and ... well, fun!

I used to have a bolt action .30/30 Savage... prefer my octagon barrel model 67 Winchester (Canadian Centennial edition, fairly rare stateside) saddle carbine lever gun.

My Savage motorcycle is TOO small and TOO light... time to somewhat "unchop" it. Stretched frame, full rear fender, Indian Chief luggage rack... chop was fun, I now need function.

Ditto the 357. I actually like the handling of my old Savage 12 ga. better than the Remington 1100 12ga. The Savage just handles so much better due to the light weight and balance, sounds like the bike too!

Sorry about the confusion on my handle, now that I'm on my third one. Started with REBSLB13 - too cumbersome, then Ronnie B - realized Hey! I'm not in high school anymore! (by about 40 years) Short round is the old Army handle. Thought I should explain a new name with whatever number of posts I have.  ::)

I'm a little late to this, but here we go.

I'm 36 years old.  I have five ferrets, three cats, one husband and no kids.

My S40 is my first bike -- got it in February, took the MSF in March, and have put a bit over 500 miles on it so far.

I'm originally from Brooklyn, NY -- hubby and I moved to northeast Georgia in '98.  I work the overnight shift in a word processing department in an Atlanta law firm, and if I have any down time at work I'll check in here and, if I think I have anything interesting to say (or don't care how boring I am  ::)), I'll post.

And... uh... yeah, that's about it.  Exciting, no?

I want one of those Savage scouts soooo bad.  I made a scout rifle a few years back, from a shortened Mauser.  I drilled and tapped the thick part of the barrel & mounted a Leupold 2x pistol scope forward of the receiver.  Very handy gun, but I made the mistake of swapping it for a Redhawk.  Not so handy as you know.

WELCOME TURI,  to the Savage site.

Your english is just fine.  It is my native language and I often have trouble with it.  I am thankful for the computer since I can try to fix all of my errors before I post my statement.

My Savage is also yellow but I am not very close to Palermo, I would like to visit Italy someday though.
I hope you enjoy your time here with the rest of us who enjoy one of the best all around motorcycles on the road today.  Unfortunately it is almost always underrated.

Got a great wife, very supportive of everything I do. although gets a little b*tchy when i spend to much on one thing ex. this bike. Computer geek who works full time repairing servers laptops and dekstops. worked for dell for 4 years left that corporate crap and now just looking for a good oppurtinty. My b-in-law got him self a hd sportster 883 i rode it around and got back on my bike and suddenly realized that the savage was prolly gonna be the perfect bike for me. So now i spend time here read articles instead of fixing computers so i'm sure i'll be fired soon  ;D the bike was a gift from a buddy who works part time in the shop i've taught him alot about computers and he taught me how to ride. i have to say i think his gift was better. I'm from texas too but haven't gotten a chance to get my handgun license yet been meaning to do that. Maybee after i get some saddle bags  :o

Oh, that hurts to read about your Sub.  The first and by far the best Sub I ever had was my '90 - made in Flint I believe.  19 mpg and white smoke both rear tires.  I've had 4 Subs since then, and wish I had kept the 90.

Be 59 this Saturday!  I am a machinest by trade. 3 years from retirement. Have 2 sons and 1 daughter, raised and gone now. 6 grandchildren. Dog and cat both dead. Bought my first Savage in 87' and had to sell in 90', missed it ever since. When the opportunity came to buy another one in this condition, I decided it was time. My first Savage was Burgundy in color and this one is Black. My very first motorcycle was a MotoMorini. I purchased this in a box from an outfit in New York in August, 69'. It came in a big wooden crate to my apartment in Huntsville,Alabama. I was stationed there for 9 months before having to go overseas. This was a nice little(150cc) bike. With me on it at the time it would go 80 mile an hour. I sold before going overseas, because I didn't have a place to keep it while I was gone. When I returned in 71' I purchased a 69' Ducati 250 Monza which I fooled with for a few years before selling it and giving up on bikes. When I saw the Savage for the first time in 87', it was love at first sight and I have felt that way ever since. My wife doesn't like motorcycles, she is not a rider. Have a good one,...Ray

I am the Environmental Compliance Officer for Clemson Univeristy in South Carolina. EPA and Hazardous Waste related stuff.

Not retired but hopefully will be in five more years. Been here 25 years now. Then I can really start working!

Not a lot to say, really.

I'm 39, single and currently unemployed.  Used to be a Data Center manager for a very large German bank, but volunteered for the layoff last spring.  Never could get along with their way of thinking...  A tad too rigid for me, thanks.

I've been riding for all of what, two weeks now?  I've put about 100 miles on my bike in the last week.  Passed the MSF class and test about two weeks back.  Need to get happier on the bike before I dare bring it to my place in the city (Baltimore, MD).  People drive like lunatics down here.

Firearms are a good thing; my other Savage is a 10FP in .308 Win.  Very good at keeping other folks honest at a distance.  Can't keep count of the other breeds.

Hobbies include m/c riding, landscape & architectural photography, pistol & rifle shooting, and renovating my old rowhouse in the now-way-too-expensive Federal Hill neighborhood.  (I'm actually thinking of moving, as I'm not nearly stuffy enough to live here anymore!).

Drop me a line if you need a ride partner 'round B-more.

Glad to have found the forum.  I've learned a lot from the archives already.

Regards, David

30 something here, married for 14years, one almost 13 year old daughter & one almost 4 year old son.

Have worked as a veterinary assistant/purchasing agent for 16 years and have recently begun college coursework towards my degree as a veterinary technician.

Last year I realized very clearly that I was not doing anything for myself, never have. Decided time for me!! Started school, got my first computer and internet access in Dec 04 and my wonderful bike this spring.

Some say i have hit my midlife crisis a bit early, maybe so but it is time for me. No work, no kids, no barking dogs just me and my bike.  I do have a riding partner occassionaly, My husband has a boulevard c50t/volusia and also just started riding.

I have 2 dogs, 5 cats and a rabbit.  I work about 30 hours a week and play whenever I get a chance, life should be more enjoyable and I plan on continuing to make it that way.

I found this site trying to learn more about the bike and here you all were with all this wonderful information.   ;)

Howdy Y'all,
My name is Tammy and I am 45 years old. I am Mom to 4 kids of my own (Marlina is 26, Mark is 22, Lance is 20 and Jess is 16), almost a step-mom to 3 more. I also have 2 grandchildren. Jonathan is 2 1/2 years old and Jennifer is 8 months.
My hunny is a construction superintendent and he travels the south. Sometimes I go with him but most time I am supervising at home.
We live in northeastern Alabama, and my guy just bought himself a...can I say it here??? A Harley, brand new, 2 weeks ago.  We went riding on the following weekend and had a blast. I hadn't been on a bike since I was 16 and back then I was never a passenger, I was in control! Well, 5 days later Momma went out and bought herself a used 1996 Suzuki LS 650! It's been almost 30 years since I drove a bike, but most of it came back to me. And to be honest, I like my Savage more than I like his Harley  ;D
I've read some posts here about classes being taken to get a license, but here in Alabama all that is needed is to pass a written test. I think maybe I am missing some much needed lessons by getting the license so easily. But in the last 8 days I have put about 400 miles on it. I'm hooked. I may not have taken a driving course, and I would like to say thank you to all of you have posted their own experiences and hints and tips on being a safe driver.
  Stay safe, y'all.

My wife and I have been talking about a trip for the 2 of us...no kids...no grandkids...just us, and Italy sounded really good.  It may take us a year or two to save up for it, but it would be great if we could meet each other during our time there.  Perhaps we could email and learn what parts of Italy would be the best, and most economical, to visit.
Thanks

Welcome and congratulations!  The MSF is not necessarily a requirement, though in some places it negates the need to take the driving test so that only a written test is needed, etc.  In my case, I already had my license and had for decades.  I took it because I hadn't ridden in 14 years and thought a brush-up on someone else's bike was a good idea.  I'm glad I did it.  It wasn't necessary but it was good for me.
