Title: Amal Mark2 Carb - Wow!
Post by bobo383 on 05/20/05 at 18:00:50

I like it - alot!  Savage is a different animal now.

For you techies, the carb is actually a little shorter length than the stock carb.  The airhorn (inlet?) is the same size as the stock savage airbox inlet, 62mm (2.445 inch).  I was able to stretch the stock boot to make it work, a temporary deal but got me going fast.  I mean fast.

For the rest, go here and scroll down to the bottom...

An Amal carb that actually works? I remember using several Monoblocs and Concentrics as baseballs...or trotline weights.  ;)

Nice to see an off the wall trick pan out.

Wonder what could be done with the Mikuni built SU knock-off I just found at work... ::)

Still trying to work it out so I can go.  Wife wants me to go visit her grandparents in Mason (TX), with her and the kids.  Going to be a tough sell to get a yard pass, I think.

This is the Amal Mark II, several generations removed from the Monobloc and Concentric.  These work.

I got that WOW factor when I fitted KLX with the FCR, one question does the Mk2 have an accelerator pump?

No accel pump on the Amal.  Might be fun to try one later on.

My Honda Shadow has an accel pump, and runs very strong as long is it's over 90 degrees outside.  On cooler days I have to leave the choke (enrichment valve) on a little bit.

Problem with that SU knock-off is the size, about 1/2 again as thick as the Savage carb, and it's a 42mm throat. Suppose I could deep six the entire airbox and run a pod or velocity stack type filter.  :P And relocate the battery while I'm at it, that carb is some kind of funky shaped. SU was an English carb, this one is the Mikuni HD Shovelhead version...74 cubic inch engine size. Ought to be about right.Guess I'll check the V-twin shop across the road and see if jets/kits are still available.

Maybe I should just send it to Lancer to play with for me, since he's the carb god.

Thanks....but I guess that I had seen those photos.  I just wondered if there were more (do I ask for too much?)

Anyway, I guess that a 38 MM Amal replaces a 40 MM Mikuni just fine.

Here you go, Greg - bike is filthy, been riding most of the day.  Dig the space between the carb and battery box now:

Hey Greg

Mark 2, go for it, good price, jetting spec's available and a good match for your raask pipe.

I converted it to manual operation about a year ago, so "PRI" is now "OFF" on mine.

I don't see a vac port on the Amal anywhere.  You'd have to drill & tap the air horn for a petc0ck vacuum barb, but that would be easy, easy.

I can actually yank the carb without removing the battery box now.  I'm hoping a K&N will fit in there, so I don't have to change to a lower battery height.  We'll see.

Still playing with it to get the needle position right, but I'm happy.  I gained 3mph on the top end (95 now), and it improved the sound of the Screamin'Eagle exhaust quite a bit.  Bike is near impossible to stall by quick-handing the clutch now - it just grunts and scoots away.

3mph at that speed is about 10% more power.
