Title: 140/90-15 fitting
Post by savagethumper on 05/16/05 at 17:37:16

I bought a new set of Dunlops for the bike this weekend, and I told the tire dealer to put a 140/90-15 on intead of the 140/80.  What a difference.  It looks fat.  Only thing is, when I picked the bike up from the shop, I was greatly concerned about the clearance between the bolts holding the chrome, and the tire on the left side.  I eyed them up as close as I could and they looked like it might be OK.  I was wrong.  At the first light from the shop, I reached back and touched the edge of the tire, and it was molten rubber.  Didn't really hurt anything since it was just the very tip of the tread, but it had to be fixed.  I stopped at Bobo's on the way home, and we removed the bolt.  Had to use an engine lift to pick the bike up.  There was no way to get the bolt out with the tire up in the fender.  Now, everything's alright, and these new tires handle and ride great.  Feels better than when I first got the bike.  I tell ya, there's no way I could have saddle bag brackets with these tires.  While I was at Bobo's, we swapped mufflers.  He got my Jardine, I got his HD sportster muffler.  Getting that Sportster muffler on is a whole other story.http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y111/savagethumper/newfatty2.jpg

Yeah, if you set your shocks up you should be fine since you aren't using saddlebag supports.  The other thing I did was to replace the mounting bolts on the inside of the fender with mushroom head hex-key bolts.

I use aluminium mushroom head hex-key bolts for all my plastic bodywork, better than steel x head and washers.

I also have a 140/90-15, and want saddlebags on the bike, so I've fabbed up some saddlebag supports to go outside the chrome fender rail.  The front uses the stock bolt, and the back required another hole drilled and tapped.

That was this morning.  Waiting for the paint to dry right now so I can install.  Where's the digital camera when I need it?  Maybe my Palm camera will work.

You chrome-happy folks will hate this, as mine are black.  Copper tubing was all I had laying around the garage when I got the urge to fab.  You could use aluminum or stainless.  I might re-do them later, depending on how well the copper holds up.

Raining today, wife and kids are gone to great-grandma's.  What else is there to do?  Had to take pics with my Palm (no, not that one, it's busy... the one with the camera).

If your chrome fender rails start to flak from the drilling let me know and I will re chrome them for you say .01 thick. 8)

I have a feeling the copper will be a little too soft over time & vibes, and I'll be re-fabbing with stronger metal someday. May chrome those re-do supports.  Do you have the inside gouge at a plating shop?

Yes the shop I work at does Areospace High wear and high temp coating. Chrome, E-Nickle, Anodize, Plasma and HVOF coatings. I am in the process of coating my full lenght headers for my 1970 GMC C10 With Sermatel I plan on coating my Savage header pipe with it as well. Just waiting till winter to do it.

Cool!  Got to shop for some stout tubing tomorrow.

The beetle rocks!

A long time ago, I worked for a zinc plater (yes, cyanide) and ran his E-Nickel line for several months.  I nickeled a 1911 45 auto that turned out spectacular.

yea it's tough to beat bright nickel coating. I am not a fan of zinc plating in any form. The way I see it is if the odor can eat the fillings out of your teeth then it is not for me. Then again I am lucky where I work I am in a lab clean room if you will, but outside the room is a nasty environment.

The bug was a lot of fun. I let it go two years ago. A guy called Me from Kansas he was shipping out to Iraq in a few weeks and saw my bug on the internet. He wanted to buy a bug and asked me to paint it. After a log conversation I offered him mine so he could drive it before he left just in case he didn’t make it back. I didn’t really want to get rid of it but seeing how I am home for good he needed it more than me. 8)

Mike,

If I fabricate a header with reverse cone would you be able to plate it?  Cost?
Thanks

Can't keep the ice cream in that reverse cone - keeps falling out the bottom...

Sorry for the delay.  The coatings I am interested in are chrome and nickle.  A reverse cone  is one long cone shape expanding out with another short cone going back down.

$15-30 depending on size, materal and what has to be masked.  8) Less if you make one and I like it and make me one.  ;D8) 8)

if I were to do it I would go it with Sermatel W on any Exhaust component it is far more stable will not break down or flake does not discolor or blue. With glass beading it looks like polished aluminum because it is. I finished these headers for my 1970 GMC C10 and 1969 Beetle today 6/4/05. They are Sermateled.

Really very very nice. Can it be done in a color, like say black?

Being a aluminum base product it really can only be one color. 8)
