Title: Tired of the backfire...
Post by Durandal on 05/10/05 at 19:12:50

Just looking for confirmation from the people in the know around here.  I've read the threads on the subject, but just want to make doubly sure before I go and screw something up.  In the picture below, is that the plug I need to drill out to get at the mixture screw?

No, directly above that you'll see that plug with the tiny hole in it. That's the one to drill & pull out.  :)

What he said...

The arrow is pointing to the throttle butterfly shaft.  Don't drill that out!  You want the little plug right above it with the pinhole dead center - makes a good target for the drill bit.

Pull out often, don't go to deep, avoid damaging the screw on the other side.

Somebody's gonna have alot of fun with that I'm sure...

No do NOT;
drill out that throttle shaft,
then pull the butterfly that just fell off,
Point the bike in the direction ya want to go,
Pull the choke out, (brace yourself)
Put it in gear and Hit the starter and if it cranks you won't have long before you are on the rev limiter,
hang on good while releasing the clutch,
then ride like this:

drill the one above it, and adjust the idle instead,
like he said. ;)

Of course this is a slippery slope you step on! - go ahead and pick up  150/152.5 main jets - let the fun begin!

I know this was said above but just to be sure it's reinforced...
Drill slowly and carefully and pull out often.  The screw behind the plug is brass and will get boogered up easily.

Ya know, I read the Clymer manual twice and looked over the parts diagram for the carb and I STILL pick the wrong hole.  That'll teach me to post when it's past my bedtime.

Thanks for the help, guys.  A hammer to the side of my head probably would have worked just as well.  ;D

i really think that the backfire is part of what gives the Savage it's unique charm...... the blue flame at night is, as we used to say in Boston, wicked pissah........ the shotgun blast let's people know you've arrived...... i know this is a little evil, but when i get where i'm going i like to wait until someone is walking by then give it a little twist of the throttle and kill the engine and watch 'em jump....... guess i'm just sick like that  ;D

Shutting it down when you get where you're going is the best part.  Too bad it happens so quickly -- I'd like to have time to shout, "Wait for it!" and then have it pop. ;D

We kinda have to bring it down to our level to participate, don't we?
