Title: Need computer wizardry please
Post by bobo383 on 04/16/05 at 02:10:34

You get what you pay for.  Free Bikepics is great for bikes, but my parts pictures get deleted.

My SBC Yahoo has free pictures, but I can't get this forum to consistently link to them.

Greg650 and Paladin seem to have their own sites to host pics.  This must cost something, but that's exactly what I need.  How do I get it and what do I ask for?

Try photobucket.com ... it's a free picture hosting site that I've used and had no problems linking to this website ... just set up your own photoalbum and upload away!

I have 2 sites.  One that I pay for and one that is free.

My "paid" site is here, but I really don't like their web "tools".  I keep it only because I've put so much time into it, and I have so many photos uploaded to their server.
Network Solutions (http://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/home.jhtml;jsessionid=KAEECS0SEHAUCCWMEAPSFEY?_DAV=&_DARGS=/en_US/common/header-home.jhtml.8_A&layoutIdIndex=4&_requestid=1621558)

My free site also has web tools which are better, but I mostly just use their online storage feature.  It is through my ISP Comcast.

Who do you actually logon to for your internet connection?  Whether it is dialup or cable, those companies usually offer free web services, such as a personal web page, home pages, etc.

It's SBC Yahoo DSL through Southwestern Bell.  They have the online photo albums through Yahoo, but the links usually don't work out or I have not figgered out how to do it yet.

Here's the link to my Savage album: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/belindabobo@sbcglobal.net/album?.dir=6cea&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/belindabobo@sbcglobal.net/my_photos

Sometimes the link works, but only for me.  I have the pics set for anybody to access, no invitation or password needed.

I've also tried Angelfire but all I get from a link is their logo - not the pic I wanted to show.

Thanks for the help.

That link works, but when I use it to post a photo in one of these postings, it doesn't work out.  But Bikepics works flawlessly.

I do it just like bike pics - go to the page, go to the biggest picture I can make, click properties, and copy/paste the web address into the post with the img brackets.

I use Picture Trail (http://www.picturetrail.com) to host my pics.  It's free and it creates the IMG tags for you for all your pics.

Open your photo album..
click on the thumbnail photo to open the big one..
right click on the photo..
go to properties..
where it says address (url) highlight and then copy..
then in your message paste between [img][/img]..

My site costs me $9/year to register the name and $6/month for the site on a two-year prepay.  I have one Gigabyte of on-line storage and 45 Gigabytes of monthly transfer.  Which is way overkill but for $6 month why not?

I started with and most of my names are still registered with Dotster (http://www.dotster.com) at $15/year.  I moved two names over to GoDaddy (http://www.godaddy.com) for the $9 rate and after the second move got an e-mail from Dotster saying they'll match GoDaddy's rate.  ;D

You start by going to GoDaddy, getting an account, and registering bobo383.com (or whatever.)  You then do to JaguarPC (http://www.jaguarpc.com) and sign up for the GigaDeal.  Take the name server information from Jaguar back to GoDaddy, plug it in, and in a day or two the whole world will be able to find you.

Building the site can be done several ways.  Jaguar provides a control panel.  Or you can use FTP.   Or you can simply set your site up as a network place and treat it as a part of your home computer. (assuming WinXP)

Free picture hosts are very handy, but you have no control over whether or not the pictures will be there and accessable next year, next month, or even next week.

Since you are on SBCGlocbal and I presume DSL you can host your pictures off your own computer at  Http:\\bobo383.homeip.net.  Just stop by www.dyndns.org to set up the redirect, grab one of the free IPAddress updaters, get a copy of Xitami and you're set.  (maybe poke a hole thru your router if you  have one.)

Thanks for all the help.  For now I put the parts pics on photobucket, and I'm looking into Paladin's recommendation of hosting off my home PC through the SBC Yahoo DSL.

Thanks again.

For demo purposes, and to verify it can be done, I did it to this desktop (at {my surname}.homeip.net).  I have LD included with my Cingular and my roll-over minutes are piling up (55 hours and rising) so a call costs me nothing but my time.  If I'm not doing anything more important than slaying dragons on the computer it would be my pleasure to help walk you thru a setup.  (not to mention you cannot test outside access from the inside.)

But not today.  Today I have to install handrails over at my in-laws.  Gene no longer is able to ride, but his 600cc Honda dual-sport is still in his garage and he still shuffles over to look at it.
