Title: Wide tires
Post by klx650sm2002 on 02/24/05 at 02:01:56

Has any one fitted a 150 in the back of the savage and if so what is it's fitted width ?
Also what are the fitted widths of the two 140 options and the std rim size ?
my 140/70/17 on a 4.25"rim is 148mm wide.
Thanks in advance

no go on the 150.  i was looking at rear tires and tried it.  it wouldnt clear the swing arm.

biggest i could go was a 140/90 this with a bobbed rear end at that.

TIRE SIZING IS EASIER THAN MOST PERCEIVE
140/80 B 15:
WIDTH IS 140 MM,
ASPECT RATIO (DISTANCE FROM RIM TO TREAD) IS 80% OF 140,
B MEANS BELTED ( R IS RADIAL),
RIM DIAMETER IS 15",
SO....
140/80-15 IS  5.51" WIDE, 4.4" FROM RIM TO TREAD,
DISTANCE FROM AXLE TO TOP IS 11.9",
TOTAL HEIGHT IS 23.8".

140/90-15 IS SAME WIDTH BUT 4.95" FROM RIM TO TREAD,
AXLE TO TOP IS 12.45" - YES, MORE THAN A HALF INCH FARTHER INTO THE FENDER,
TOTAL HEIGHT IS 24.9".

150/90-15 IS
5.9" WIDE,
12.81" FROM AXLE TO TOP,
OVERALL, THE 150/90-15 IS ABOUT A HALF INCH WIDER AND WILL STAND ALMOST AN INCH TALLER INTO THE FENDER THAN STOCK,
TOTAL HEIGHT 25.62".

I DON'T HAVE ANY OF MY OLD CHARTS WITH ME, BUT, PUTTING A 150/90B15 ON A STOCK RIM MAY ROUND OUT THE TREAD AREA AND ACTUALLY REDUCE CONTACT AREA (PATCH) WITH THE GROUND - IF SO....THAT'S LESS TRACTION FOR THE REAR TIRE - NOT A GOOD THING -
THEN YOU'RE LOOKING AT A WIDER RIM TO KEEP THE TIRE SHAPE AS IT WAS DESIGNED - TO GET MORE RUBBER ON ROAD, ALONG WITH THE LOOK.
BUT - NOT DONE YET-
SINCE THE TIRE IS TALLER, IT WILL GO FARTHER ON EVERY REVOLUTION THAN THE STOCK TIRE.
YOU'RE BIKE WILL BE MOVING FASTER THAN SPEEDO REGISTERS - YOU MAY NOT KNOW IT, BUT RADAR GUNS DO......
TO KEEP HEIGHT INTO FENDER & SPEEDO AS IF STOCK, THE CORRECT DIMENSIONS WOULD BE 150/75B15 (DOES ANYONE MAKE ONE?) AND RIM MAY NEED TO BE ONE INCREMENT (1/4" TO 1/2") WIDER .
I HOPE THIS HELPS

I have the Dunlop Elite II 150/90 on mine and it did rub the bolts used to mount the sissy bar chrome side panels - mostly if saddlebag supports are installed - and only on the port side.  I am 195 lbs and have a trunk on the bike with probably another 15 lbs in it.  I had to set the shocks at their highest and remove the saddlebag supports.  As a precaution, I replaced the OEM mounting bolts with mushroom cap allen bolts.  They are more difficult to work with if you leave the tire on but I feel safer about them not rubbing the tire at all - even on bumpy roads.

so if you removed the bolts or even replaced the whole fender with a plain one it was ok?
how much clearance do you have between tire and fender??

Marty, you didn't mention the 130/90 15. How would this size compare to the recommended 140/80 15. Would this size be the closest fit to stock? This tire would only be less than 1/2" narrower allowing for saddlebag bracket fitment. Lets face it we are not wearing these tires at the edge. The advantage of the 139/90 15 is greater availability and cheaper price. On the downsize I realize it has slightly lesser load carrying capabilities. Also, is the standard rim suitable for a 130/90?

Sunny, I'm sure it would be.  I just wanted the sissy bar left on for a while longer.  I have my trunk mounted to the luggage rack which is attached to it.  Eventually I'll probably remove it completely and use a basic or bobbed fender.  I'll have to see what I like best.  Right now I'm gonna concentrate on replacing the leaking head seal/plug, adjusting the valves and removing the OEM tank emblems and replacing them.  After that, it's ride time.

I originaly fitted a 150/60/17 on KLX's 4.25" rim, it measured allmost 160 and touched the chain. Sold it to a mate with a CBR400 and got the 140 which clears just.

BENT WHEEL ASKS ABOUT A 130/90-15
ALMOST 1/2 INCH NARROWER
0.2 INCH SHORTER INTO FENDER - SAME SPEEDO READINGS AS STOCK TIRE WHEN HALF WORN OUT
I AGREE WITH YOUR "UP-SIDE" COMMENTS
DOWNSIDE
1-AGAIN, I DO NOT HAVE MY OLD CHARTS - 130 MAY BE HAPPIER IN NARROWER RIM-MAYBE NOT-SOME PARTS BOOKS HAVE TIRE SIZE/RIM SIZE CHARTS - EZ TO READ
2-CONTACT PATCH IS SMALLER*****SPARE ME THE ARGUMENTS ON DEFLECTION IN SIDEWALL AREA IS NOT A FUNCTION OF CONTACT PATCH SIZE........
IT IS---I WAS IN COURT ON THIS ONE REPRESENTING A MAJOR TIRE COMPANY ON THIS VERY TOPIC---
THE CONTACT PATCH WILL BE SMALLER - I WOULD NEVER SUGGEST GOING THAT WAY
3-LOAD CAPACITY IS REDUCED - REMEMBER TO REDUCE MFG. CAPPACITIES (WEIGHT AND SPEED) BEFORE TAKING OFF
IN SHORT:
1-WILL IT WORK? - YES. (WITH LESS CARRYING CAPACITY, LESS TRACTION, LESS STABILITY.....)
2-WOULD I SUGGEST DOING IT? - NO
3-IF IN THE TIRE BUSINESS, WOULD I SELL IT TO YOU? - I KNOW BETTER
4-WOULD I DRIVE IT? - NEVER!

THAT SAID, THE CHOICE IS YOURS

How wide is the rear wheel on the Savage, and the front come to that ?
Thanks.

Title: Re: Wide tires
Post by Savage_Rob on 02/27/05 at 00:50:43

Stock sizes are:

Front: 100/90-19
Rear: 140/80-15

Widths would be:

Front: 100mm  or 3.94 inches
Rear: 140mm or 5.51 inches

Thanks again.

Rob thanks for the stainless mushroom bolt tip.
I checked tire specs and the Dunlop was narrower than the Bridgestones. Those  appear to be quit common on eBay.  My bike friends recommend the Michelins for traction.

Arizona had one new Qualifier 150/90 RWL on the bargain bin, & could not resist. I got it shipped for just over $50. I will have to try the mushroom bolt trick and the saddle bag support  will need some rework.

From Tumi's  Long Term Report:
http://www.thumperpage.com/articles/LS650LTR.html

"I used a 140/90 Metzeler Marathon which might have lasted for 20000 miles. Then I tried an Avon Elan HL30 150/90 (yes!) which had 3mm of tread after 16000 miles. OK it had poor wet grip especially when new. BTW,you can fit a 150/90 tire into Savage if you really must. Please measure different brands of 150/90 tires for width and choose the narrowest. 150/90 is just a norm and manufa ctures build tires at different widths inside the norm tolerance. 150/90 tire is, I really hope I remember this right, 7.5% taller compared to 140/80 (140/90 is just 4% taller) and lenghtens the final ratio at same amount. 150/90 tire lets you go 7.5% faster at same engine revs compared to 140/80 and Savage really needs that taller ratio. 150/90 tire will rub, in my bike it rubbed against fender rail nut inside fender, against some welding slag in swingarm and against belt guard. All the rubbing was very slight and was not dangerous so I let the tire stay on."

I see Michelin Commanders come in a 150/80 - wonder if that would solve the rubs of the 150/90....

I tried to get a 4" rim for the back of KLX but could only get a 4.25", so had to make do.

A couple of weeks ago I put on a set of Dunlop Qualifiers RWL.  Front is OEM size, but rear is 140/90H15.  The rear fits, but just barely so.  I can recommend these tires, they stick wet or dry and ride out very smooth.

i went with an irc 140/90/15 fits nicely, fills up the hole completley    i tried a 150 no way it fit.

this is what i've found in tires.. they are like womens clothes. no two manafacturers sizes are the same. they are supposed to be but no... same with womens clothes.
i'm sure someone out there will take issue with that statement.  just my observations.

I went with the Dunlop 491 Elite II, which is a 140/90B15 and I like it (after removing the saddlebag supports).
