Title: Our Accessories
Post by Diane on 11/27/04 at 06:22:39

Susan........... I was wondering about the possibility of starting something like the Technical corner or I guess even just a new topic here where we could post :
1. what accessory they have bought
2. where purchased, price paid
3. pic of it on the bike
4. review after use
It was my search for a windshield that brought me to this site.   ;D I typed in the right search that took me directly to your post of the Memphis Shade.  But after that, I had to look all over the place to see what other members have.  Same when I decided to get Saddlebags.  If it was a totally new page like the Technical Corner it could even be broken down by topic/type of item.  Anyway, let me know what you think.

In the forum of "Our Accessories"

The first couple of messages are sticky, maintained by and only posted to by the moderator; subjects such as windscreen, saddlebags.  Such as:

Subject: saddlebags
Saddlebag recomendations (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1096252206;start=2#2)
LeatherLyke (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=RubberSideDown;action=display;num=1101239131)

These sticky messages would link to the buried threads where each of us describe our bags and replied to the comments/questions about them.

This would work.

Hi. This is an interesting idea. At the moment I'm having trouble getting through to our administrator. He must be tied up on other projects. Maybe there is a way we can do our own thing in the context of a topic. Any ideas Diane or others?

Maybe for the time being we could just start right here like Paladin did with the links to his saddlebags.  If everyone would hunt down info they have already posted and put up a link here it would at least get us started.

My wife's Savage:
Lightbar - Accessories International - $200 - CW3009
Custom sissy bar - local machine shop - $200 or so - can't recall exactly - just knew it was too much but she wanted it so....
Highway Hawk Deluxe Highway bar - Bikercom.com - $ too much - wish I had know about the Rizco ones - Don't bother with the other highway bar HH has - not worth it either!
SuperTrapp - Sealership - $200+ - don't recall exactly.
National Cycle Flyscreen - Ebay - $50
Superbrace - $140
Front turn signals on rear (internals only) - wired up for running lights. Free - taken off my bike.
Custom paint on side covers - local artist - $100 for both.
Saddlebags - local Suzuki dealership - $ don't recall.

My Savage:
Seeger chopper kit - $1450 back 2 years ago (2002)
JPCycles - Custom Chrome dual headlights
JPCycles - Custom Chrome H-D turn signals (wired for running lights in rear) -
GTS Toba Seat (don't bother buying one - unless you like taking something apart and putting it back together so it will fit the bike - don't know if the GTS Cobra seats have the same problem or not - I know others on Bert's site have them and never mentioned any complaint) - $325 from Seeger Cycle (they don't sell them anymore)
Rivco Highway pegs (HD-002) - $139 - CruiserCustomizing.com
Highway Hawk foot pegs (driver & passenger) - $35 a pair - Bikercom.com
J.C. Whitney hand grips - ZX010534X       $22.99
J. C. Whitney cruiser style short stem teardrop mirrors - ZX013983T       $24.99
Jardine muffler - local Suzuki dealer - $ don't recall - less than the Supertrapp (and I like the sound better!)
H-D sissy bar pad on OEM sissy bar - $ 54 at H-D Dealer
H-D 4 inch risers - $ don't recall but around 125 I think (since found around the same pair for 50 less in J.C. Whitney)
Custom paint by Attitude Custom Paint (see www.customflamepainting.com) $825 (my ex-company's insurance paid for it - after an employee ran over my bike in the parking lot)
Custom paint on side covers - new local artist $80 for both

The only things I've done that are transferable to the Savage are the 17" wheels and the FCR41 carb, don't think anyone would want the wheels though.

I don't know how thiis accessorie is called.

The use of such a thing is better steering and it helps very good. It holds the two front legs together to give you a better control over the direction of the front wheel.

That accessory is a fork brace, I had one on my 125 & 350 LC's but can't fit one on my KLX as it has upsidedown forks.

That's the first fork brace I've ever seen on a Savage ... where'd ya get it rke? Are they available for purchase anywhere?

I hadn't seen a fork brace on a Savage before, either.  Very interesting.

I know the benefit these are supposed to provide on a bike too.  Had them on my dirt bikes.  I just wonder if it is really needed on the Savage....the Savage has a double steel layered front fender that is pretty stout.  I suppose that the forks could twist in the upper triple tree since it doesn't actually clamp the fork tube....

Anyway, that is a new one....glad to see it.

Ah,

So that's called a fork brace. It's a custommade brace wich I ordered several years ago. I've used it for almost 14 years now and I don't want my Savage without it. I ordered it by a factory for shocks and I had to measure it before I could buy it.

It is made from a standard Harley brace wich is modified to fit on the Savage. The diameter of the legs is modified and the distance between the legs is adjustable with two bolds.

Used it for 14 years?  Cool.  And adjustable too.  I like the black.  It would match my forks.

A company makes them for the stock Savage - I have one on my wife's bike.  Superbrace (http://www.superbrace.com/).  I didn't notice any real difference in handling so don't know if it would be worth it to any of you.  I got a brain fart and ordered it for  my chopper - except the chopper kit has the forks wider so it wouldn't fit.  I knew they were wider, but in the excitement of finding something I wanted (for the chopper), I ordered it.  Before it got here I realized my stupidity and so it ended up on my wife's bike.  Great quality but I don't know that it's needed on a stock Savage.

Title: Re: Our Accessories
Post by rke on 12/06/04 at 02:48:17

The Savage was my first chopper.

I've had several bikes before we bought our Savage. The last bike I used to ride was a Triumph Trophy (900cc) that was owned by my brother. Because of a argument with that brother I needed a bike for myself. And so my wife and I decided to buy a Savage.

At the moment we bought the bike I found the steering not like the steering of the Triumph. On an earlier bike I've had a fork brace. This was on a Honda CB750 and on that bike it had worked perfectly. So I ordered this fork brace for my Savage.

It eliminates the rubber-like feeling the Savage has in its steering. But, if you do like this feeling, then you don't need a fork brace. There are even people that use extra risers with extra rubber to make this "rubber feeling" even greater.  But, that's not my cup of tea.

I wonder if the brace posted by Thehoghunter will fit on older Savages, because the picture of the website shows a straight forward brace, while mine has a bridgelike shape. Maybe thehoghunter can post a picture of his fork brace.

I noticed that the Superbrace was not listed for earlier Savages.

SuperBrace Part#: 3335
Fits Model: Suzuki Savage LS 650/GZ250
Years: (2001-2002)

Since it also listed compatibility with the GZ250, maybe there was a difference in the GZ250 that causes the limitation but I'm not aware of any major differences in previous year Savages.  I think I may give it a try though.  The rubbery/wobbly feeling is something I'd noticed from the first week I bought the Savage.  In fact, I even did several thorough inspections of the front end because I was not accustomed to this feel and wanted to be sure nothing was amiss.  After satisfying myself that all was okay with the bike, I just chalked it up to a lighter bike than I'd been used to and moved on.   While I would prefer a stabler feel, I'm not sure it's worth the $150 it'd cost. It is under consideration though.  Does anyone have enough experience with these devices in general to say whether they provide much difference in actual stability or if it is simply more of difference in the feel?  Your opinions are appreciated.

I rode a V-MAX once and the front end felt that bad I got off and looked to see if the tire was flat.Definately in need of a fork brace.

The picture on the web site isn't the same - both my wife's and my Savages are 1996 models (so they did make one for the older models).

Pics are at http://www.bikepics.com/members/thehoghunter/96savage/

Title: Re: Our Accessories
Post by Savage_Rob on 12/06/04 at 08:48:29

I'm still thinking it should be compatible pretty much across the board so far as Savages go.  I looked up the 1998 model (mine) and the 2001 model (referred to by the Superbrace site) on RonAyers.com and the part numbers for the front damper assemblies are identical, as are the part numbers for the steering stems.  That said, I think the superbrace should work with mine if I decide to go that route.  That may just be a generic (not bike-specific) photo they have on the order page.  You're right; it doesn't look like yours and I don't see how the one pictured could fit the Savage without doing something radical like cutting or removing the fender.  I'd bet the one you have is the one they should be showing.

Okay, I decided to put one on.  I'll let y'all know what I think once I get it and try it out.  I will try to be as objective as possible (trying not to fall prey to the "It runs better now that I washed it..." mindset).

Title: Re: Our Accessories
Post by Savage_Rob on 12/14/04 at 06:18:03

Okay, here's my take.  The SuperBrace is extremely good quality and does fit my '98, even though it says 2001-2004 or something like that.  I notice a definite improvement on uneven surfaces such as rain grooves, etc.  I specifically took her out on some roads that have annoyed me a lot in past for the wobble they induced.  She's much more stable now.  Whether it's worth the cost has to be a personal decision since I'm not sure whether it makes the bike any safer or reduces wear on other parts.  It definitely looks good (the polished aluminum looks almost like chrome) and works well.

Oh, BTW HogHunter... the one pictured is NOT the actual product.  It is arched to get it over the fender.  I received one that looks very much like yours... possibly identical.

Savage_Rob - I should have rode my wife's on some roads that have bothered me in the past - you did a better test than I did!  I might have to take mine off to check out the stock ride vs Superbrace ride.

Still wish they had one for the Seeger chopper kit.

Title: Re: Our Accessories

If you take measurements and send them in, they might have a stock part that fits.  They have quite a few.  Just a thought.

Post by thehoghunter on 12/14/04 at 08:37:52

Yea, I talked to them about it back when I got the first one.  They would be happy to make one if SeegerCycle or the parent company that makes the chopper kit gave them the info but didn't seem to want to try to figure out one that might work for just me.  :'(

The fork brace I had on my 125 was very good at stoping the forks twisting under braking (single disc), should do the same for the Savage.

It took all of 5-10 minutes and is about as easy as it gets.  If you can use an allen wrench and a torque wrench, you're set.  I would suggest using a lift so the front wheel is off the ground for this but it's easy to build one if you need to.  Just look in the Technical Corner under "Rikko's Build Your Own Bike Lift/Stand".

I just added one of the LED Helmet lights. I love it.  It took about 4 minutes to install, but I can now be more confident that when I am braking the driver behind me realizes it. The installation was nothing more than replacing the 1157 tail/brake bulb with the transmitter LED bulb. It uses a standard 1157 base so no changes are required. Then I simply atttached the rubberized LED Strip to the back of my helmet using the included sticky tape and I was done. When I hit the brakes the 5 High Intesity LEDS flash for 5 seconds then lock on until I release the brake. The replacement bulb seems to be about twice as bright as the old bulb also.  Another neat feature is your can overide the strip to flash and use your helmet as an emergency flasher. This looks like it would come in handy if you are stuck dead on the side of the road.

Post by rkutzner on 12/20/04 at 13:32:30

Where'd you get the helmet lights?  I tried a $12 LED replacement on my S40 and was VERY DISAPPOINTED.  It was half the brightness of the stock bulb.  I am putting on the running/brake light conversion kit, though.

I was going to order directly through cyclegadgets.com but found it cheaper on Ebay. There are several sellers with them online. For some unknow reason I bid on one in England and won. I almost paid way to much due to my lack of attention. I forgot about the conversion and at  this time the dollar is not going so well against the pound. I did get lucky and know one bid against me.

I am planning on ordering a couple of other items through CycleGadgets though. They seem to have some unique items.

I had been looking at several different varieties of both clocks and voltage monitors until I ran across this.  It has clock, voltage monitor (11-16 volts), and a thermometer.  I thought it was pretty decent for $27.

2005-01-02 Addendum:  It's actually a bit larger than I envisioned and I'm not quite sure how I'll mount it yet.  I think I'm gonna mull it over a bit.  The packaging is a bit odd too.  On the outside it refers to big bike toys or something similar but the instructions inside refer only to cars.  It also contains both inside (internal) and outside (wired remote) thermometer sensors. While I'm sure it'll work, I'm not sure how weather resistant it will be.  I will probably also simply clip the "outside" sensor off.

If you figure out a nice place to mount the display you will have to put a picture of it online. I was loking into something similar but could not figure out where to put it.
