Title: Stuffing the Jardine
Post by savagethumper on 09/28/04 at 21:07:18

I was recently at the Suzuki dealer to get a couple oil filters, and I noticed they had a big package of fiber to stuff in dirtbike mufflers.  My bike has a Jardine slip-on, that was on it when I bought it. It's too loud for my taste, so I yanked the baffle out, wrapped it in the fiber from the dealership, and stuffed it back in.  It fit perfectly around the baffle and was real easy to do.  Now, the bike is just a little bit quieter, and the backfires aren't so darn loud.  I don't seem to notice any difference in the way it runs, but I was curious if what I did is safe for the motor and stuff.  I'm not the most mechanically inclined, you know.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

The packing is just supposed to absorb certain sound waves from the exhaust and not really slow the flow.  I doubt that it hurt anything.

But what about the backfires? ???

The backfires are still there, just not as loud.  The bike has a deeper tone.  BTW, my buddy that had the Shadow 600, got a 2001 Sportster 1200.  It's a nice bike, but the gas tank looks smaller than the Savage's.

I think that the Sportster tank is a little bigger but since the mileage is lower it gets about the same distance per tank.

I have to repack the silencer on KLX now and again.
