Title: Front brakes dragging
Post by Pat B on 09/26/04 at 07:12:39

OK, I need some help.  My front breaks got worn out in less then 6,000 miles.  I replaced the pads, but they are dragging on the front rotor.

I have looked through my Clymer manual, but couldn't find anything about dragging pads.

Can anyone give me a good starting point??

Thanks in advance

Does dragging mean that you hear them rubbing like when you are pushing the bike?

Are they still new or have you ridden it some?

Yes, I can hear/feel the dragging.

I have ridden 400+ miles since the replacement.  I read somewhere that you should do 1000 miles before hard stopping, so I have been avoiding that when possible.

When I changed the pads, the piston moved freely.  I didn't do anything extra to the calipers, and I didn't add any brake fluid.

Do the brakes work correctly and feel right?

Do the brakes squeal when you use them?

Yes, they work and feel fine.  Actualy they feel better then before replacment, now I'm using EBC pads.

There is no squeal when using them.

It is quite common to hear a little rubbing sound from the brakes.  Just the nature of disc brakes as the float on the sides of the rotor.  They do it in a car too.

If they don't squeal or feel funny, and still work fine, then I'd say they are okay.

You're sure they were installed correctly?

With new brake pads I'd recomend a few hard stops to bed them in and stop them glasing.

I took them back apart, and they are installed properly, but I still have problems.

With the front wheel off the ground, a good hard spin only gets 2-3 revolutions from the wheel.  When I take the caliper off it spins 20+ revs with the same spin force.

The rotor is true, and I get no change in breaking when stopping.  I don't know what else to do.

That does seem to be a bit tight.  It sounds like the pads are not retracting far enough.  At this point, I'd suggest bleeding the brake and/or rebuilding the caliper.
