Title: bike will not start
Post by springman on 10/19/26 at 10:50:36

06 S40 will not start. I was having issues with the bike being difficult to start for a couple of months now. I figured it was the decomp solenoid because if I put it in gear and forced it to roll it would eventually start. That is not working any more.
I charged the battery to make sure I have a fully charged battery. I go to start the bike and I hear a click when I push the start button but nothing else happens.
Where do I start. Help please. Weather is beautiful and no bike to ride. Thanks

Other than loose connections , you just described a failing battery. How old izdat battery ? What kind of battery ? Wet cell , lithium , gel .

Wow, that would be a simple fix. I thought it was relatively new, but really cannot remember. I'll put a volt meter on it and crank it and see what I get. Thanks.

I just did a quick search and found the battery is more than 3 years old. So yep Ruttly, you may be right. I won't be home until late tonight so hopefully I can check it out tomorrow. Will let you know what I find. Thanks again.

I second the battery as the culprit. I would test it with a load tester and see what you get. Harbor freight has a decent one for like $20. If the battery is good start by double checking all the connections. I weak battery or loose connection can turn the starter but wont have enough juice to ignite so that could explain the hard starting.

Thanks Splash. I'm hoping I'll get home early enough today to put the voltmeter on it. I don't have a load tester but hopefully the voltmeter will be sufficient.

I just noticed your bike info. 34.7 MPG, you must ride hard!!! :)

lol. That is pretty outdated info and only based on a small sample of rides. I think there is some discrepancy in the numbers too. I actually stopped using fuelly a while ago and just never took it off my profile.

The first suspect is allways the battery! Have you or anybody els trickle charge it in the winter? Even cheap batterys supose to last more then 3 years with meantance! And then the solenoid at the starter motor cliks, and you can push start it! There is still power in the battery, but not enough to engage the starter motor and decompress soleniod at the same time!
You need to test this with a new battery or a jumpstarter, if that solved the problem its good if not you have bigger problems!
Soo for your comfort as a biker for 55 years, there have been a few battery strugle in those years! The moste prominent was lack of maintens when I was younger, have to buy a new cheap battery every second year!
The thing was, there was 12 Volt, the problem was there was less KW/hour in bad batterys!
