I was looking for some advice on a stock motor with K&N and pipe running a VM carb. What is your set up and how does it run.

I had the Mikuni VM36 on one of my S40s.  Lancer sells a complete VM36 kit.

I had a 28PJ and 200MJ, clip in the middle groove.  I had some no-name open aftermarket muffler, stock panel air filter.  It ran similar to the stock CV carb with somewhat better throttle response.  I probably could have put a 190MJ in it.  The 200 was a little rich at full throttle.

If its similar to stock I'd leave it stock. The stock air box and filter is something I actually like. Its far cleaner for the motor.

I hear ya.  I bought that S40 with the VM36, so I just worked with it.  The VM36 can better support bigger mods if that's something you might do later.

I'll not mod a savage. I have bigger and faster bikes than it. It needs the FE modded more than engine IMHO.
