Yo savages,

For those who have removed their decomp solonoid/cable, what have you done with the release mechanism in the head cover? Is this fine to just sit there as it is? Or if removed is there a way to seal the orifice it comes out of?

As long as the spring is still keeping the lever down I don't see why the mechanism would cause any sort of issue just sitting there. But isn't not using the decomp solenoid wearing out the starter motor faster?

With the spring still attached the mechanism rattles against the head and is quite annoying, I also worry about any internal rattling against the rocker arms.

I've experienced no issues without the decomp other than this. I find the decomp unnecessary and have no idea why it's even on the bike... Maybe back when batteries were weaker there was trouble turning the motor over when conditions were right for it (stage of compression, ambient temp) but I consider the decomp solonoid unnecessary and actually problematic -- the main power runs through it bypassing the ignition and it can actually start the motor on its own in some circumstances or will die trying to turn it over until something fails.

You would likely see why they put it on if your bike sat outside and you lived in an area where the temperatures dropped to 10 degrees!

Some folks need to start and ride their bikes in winter climates, and the oil is thick and the battery loses power.  We had one member who rode his bike year round in Washington State, as he could ride the ferry boat without having to wait an hour to get on (the cars had to wait in line).

The decompression release makes it easier for the starter to get the momentum built up in the engine prior to the compression stroke......it allows for easier starts in cold weather.  In warm weather with a good battery - you often don't need it.

You can put an additional spring or some other object on the lever to hold it in the down position.

Thanks Dave -- can you imagine any issues with it having been run loose?

Regarding the ambient temp I do ride year round here in Pennsylvania and I've never had any issues starting with it removed, granted I'm not typically in 10 degree weather here, our winters are growing more mild by the year it seems.

I removed the decomp system from my Savage years ago, with no negative effect.

What a relief. I dropped the decomp. Relay in this years setup, and was wondering.....  But it starts up real easy without.
On the plus side, that ugly clonking sound I reported about just after the rebuild og my engine: It is gone now. So I guess it must have been caused by the heavy parts in that relay clonking around.
