Title: White wall tires
Post by Peter Fonda on 05/29/25 at 12:17:00

so I really love the look of white wall tires and was hoping to get some on mine BUT I can’t find any that are for the rear factory size 140/80/15.  Right now the rear has a 130/90/15.  I can buy white wall tire for the front but nothing that size for the rear.

Is it possible to go to a bigger tire in the rear for a white wall,

You can go to the 140/90-15 - it is a bit tall and some folks like that it raises the gearing and the extra bulk helps stabilize the bike in a straight line.  It generally doesn't have any rubbing issues - the bolts holding the chrome rails on the side of the fender have very high heads and you may need to replace those with bolts having a shallower head.

Some folks have put 150/80-15 on the rear - it can rub badly and really is too wide of a tire for the rim.....it squeezes the beads in and makes the tread profile too round.  It will slow the bike down as they are far heavier than the 140/80-15 or 130/90-15 - which are the best size tire for the bike if you want good handling and acceleration.

There are white walls that can be added to your tires - they are commonly called "Portawalls".

Yes I’ve seen the portawalls before BUT they sell them in pairs of four and I’d only need one for the rear.

Maybe you should look around a bit.

Has anyone ever ran the portawalls ? I’ve just kinda heard they tend to fray on the ends when driving faster then 60mph, and I’ve seen some they’re wrinkled like and so t look good at all

It might be a tight fit (150/90-15), but with some adaptation it might work.

I found this video on YouTube his rear tire is 150/90/15.  He also lowered it as well, so I’m wondering if I can actually fit a 150/90/15 in the back being mine is not lowered and that I can or could change the bolts out inside the fender either a thin head or carriage bolt maybe [ch129300]

Bwahahaha.  Custom tire siping!  LOL.

Some low profile fasteners should work to get the clearance you need.  But Dave makes some good points about how the tire will bead funny and kinda deforms the natural shape of the tire.

PS - can you post a link of that tire comparison tool?  Easier than doing it on  a coctail napkin.

I’ve used this calculator for years, works good if you end up changing sizes to know where the speedo

His tire in the video didn’t look bad on the bike tho when he showed it

Here is a tire size to rim fitment chart.

If you go outside of the fitment shown on this chart, you will be deforming the tire to a shape it is not supposed to have.

When you jam a wide tire on a narrow rim, the tread cross section becomes very round and the contact patch to the road is reduced.  Poor traction and accelerated wear is the result.
