Title: Tour and old thumpers Post by jcstokes on 02/09/25 at 09:51:23 Just got back from a 2500 maybe 2700 km tour of NZ's Manawatu and East Coast of the North Island. Went to Vintage Car Club of NZ'S National Motorcycle Rally. Couldn't use Jawa so had to take S40. Took a few photos of old thumpers which I may post later. Saw some classic bike racing and lots of very twisty roads. |

Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by Ruttly on 02/17/25 at 10:53:58 My favorite is the 1913 BSA 500cc ( moped ? ) It would look so good in the dining room. 8-) |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by blod on 02/17/25 at 16:01:40 Why do people call them thumpers ::) https://youtu.be/dUWbKFbHX-4 CLAUDE RYE LTD. THE MOTORCYCLE PEOPLE. FULLHAM ROAD LONDON S.W.6 ;D I had one of these 52 years ago, now I have another. It's my dream come true. http://https://i.imgur.com/bRwG66qh.jpg http://https://i.imgur.com/hAy5UQoh.jpg The fiberglass panels were not a commercial success, most people threw them away, this one as can be seen still has them. I used to hate them too, but now I think they look cool, certainly unique. This one is a 350cc Viper. It has a top speed of about 90 mph and should cruise all day at 60-70 mph. Both the 500cc Venom and the viper look identical, they share the same frame and the bottom end of the engine is the same. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by Ruttly on 02/17/25 at 16:51:10 Cool bars , not an easy bend to find here. So english & vintage. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by jcstokes on 02/17/25 at 17:05:51 Ruttly, the 1913 BSA was ridden fifty to seventy miles at least, he was on a short route. It wasn't a dining room feature. |

I don't have a clue what the prices are like in NZ, but prices in Australia seem to be high if this is anything to go by. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzcMuMr38WA In the UK the bottom has fallen out of the market. There's loads of old blokes snuffing it or just can't manage any more, and there's a lack of interest in classic bikes from younger people. Now is the time to buy a classic bike. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by LANCER on 02/17/25 at 19:10:11 I troll eBay for BSA’s, and right now they are not selling at all. Many have been listing there for months, and one for more than a year, maybe 2 +. So I agree, there’s not much interest in classics at all. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by blod on 02/17/25 at 19:45:23 On second thoughts after having watched the video from Australia again the asking prices seem a lot, but they are only the asking price, don't mean that they will get it. When I look at all the people there I can't see many if any youngsters. I would describe them as geriatric. It would not seem unreasonable to estimate that many / most will be dead within the next ten years. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by LANCER on 02/18/25 at 03:28:57 I’m looking beyond the next decade, I may be moving slower than in the last decade but I’m Not ready to hang up the towel…and I still want to ride. But that’s just me. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by Ruttly on 02/18/25 at 10:06:29 It is a niche market and prices have been elevated beyond their worth. Seems to have been that way for a while. Building one is a passion and very pricey , not a profit market unless real old or real rare. Now everyone thinks they can sell at top dollar after a full restoration. It ain’t gonna happen , we may be in a market reset on values. I’m always looking for bsa parts , barn finds. , Craigslist gems. Found a $350 sidecar- no chassis just body , looks like it would be fun to slide down a snowy hillside in. I’m only building my BSA 250 cause it came back home to me after 40+ years. Kinda couldn’t say no , if I had said no , I would have lost the opportunity to knowingly dump a bucket of cash on a build that could never even give the bucket back. It has plugged up my garage , been a PIA and used up a ton of time and money. My hands touch it everyday , I can already see what final version will be. That’s a Passion. A niche market for sure. |

I think we are in a market reset on values. I paid less for my 1956 Velocette than a new Royal Enfield 350 classic would have cost. That said I think the market all motorcyles is a niche market nowadays. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by jcstokes on 02/18/25 at 15:23:28 Another one |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by MMRanch on 02/18/25 at 21:16:58 Lancer , are you the one who got that 441 a couple weeks back ? :-? |

Nope, was not me. Which. 441 are you talking about ? There are 4 or 5 on eBay right now, some super fine and others not as much. Prices range From $9500 down to $1500/2500. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by jcstokes on 02/19/25 at 19:50:35 Perhaps this is enough for a while |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by Ruttly on 02/20/25 at 09:58:31 JC , didn’t say I wouldn’t ride it. It would be in a climate controlled dining room rather than a cold damp garage. Where everyone’s eyes could appreciate my good tastes in motorcycles. Acceptable ? |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by jcstokes on 02/20/25 at 10:20:24 Ruttly, I don't know what his storage facilities are, hopefully a warm dry garage, in your case it's probably better in a lounge or drawing room, with a pet litter oil collector underneath. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by Ruttly on 02/20/25 at 20:20:53 No sir , no leaks , no runs , no errors. After the last child left , I built the tracker in her bedroom , it was a SOB to get out ! ;D |

Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by Ruttly on 02/24/25 at 17:26:17 Each one amazes me. How they did it back then. The evolution of new technologies quite literally moving us forward. I wish I was more into modern motorcycles. I wish someone would build something that interests me. The important part is I love the history of motorcycles. Thanks JC for posting the porn pics. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by ohiomoto on 02/24/25 at 18:34:22 Nice bikes. Thanks for the pictures. |

Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by blod on 03/04/25 at 12:05:51 The sad thing is that so many owners do not appreciate them for what they are, many want to modify them. They spend a fortune, often giving them 12 volt electrics , electric starts, and indicators., in fact they do everything possible to convert them into a Suzuki Savage, which they could of bought for 10 % of what their conversions cost. |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by jcstokes on 03/04/25 at 13:32:34 Fair enough, but owners do as they see fit to do, I am something of a purist myself. I have done little in the way of mods to my S40, I do like reading some of the posts about altering gear ratios by changing front and rear pulleys, and also the Wiseco piston mods. Some of Drag Bike Mikes posts are very interesting, however, I have niether the time, skill or money to do what he does. Both my 1929 Whippets are still six volt and no indicators. My 1937 Buick has had indicators added by previous owner, and I' glad of them, It's still on 6volt. My 1975 Jawa is stll 6volt. |

S40's have been most probably produced in the hundreds of thousands, they are everywhere, whereas Velocettes for example are few and far between, they need preserving for future generations. Just buy a Suzuki Savage and preserve the rarities. And save yourself a fortune in the process ;) |
Title: Re: Tour and old thumpers Post by Ruttly on 03/04/25 at 16:24:46 My 55 Ford F100 is and will stay 6V , turn signals , heater and cigarette lighter were options added on at the dealership. 8-) |

Little by little she’s gonna replace my 2010 Ford Ranger. My grocery getter , run to the hardware store and/or dumps. Keep her local till she proves herself as road worthy. No fear as I have AAA Platinum road service ! ;D ;D ;D |
