Title: Metric System Post by ThumperPaul on 02/09/25 at 08:55:42 Back in the old high school days, like the late 70s, the only thing I learned and knew about the metric system is that it was this “weird” way most of rest of the world measured stuff. School didn’t teach a thing about it. For a short guy, I was pretty good at track. I ran the 40 yard dash in like 4.6 seconds. The 100 yard dash in like 10.9 seconds (breaking under 11 seconds was a milestone). I ran the 440 in like 53 seconds. The word “meter” didn’t exist. I was 5’7” and weighted 145lbs. Dang, 170cm sounds much taller than 5’7”. Having owned multiple Japanese bikes including 5 Savages, I’ve really come to embrace the metric system. Not to mention all the stuff made in China that is virtually all metric. The “Base 10” decimal system really fits the way my brain works. Memorizing or knowing that 1/2” is 0.5” is easy. Converting other inch measurements to a decimal in my head, not so much. Like 7/32” - who can do that in their head or has it memorized? I can do the 8ths in my head easily enough. The darn 16th and 32nds are just goofed up ballpark guesses in my head. I watched a YouTube repair video the other day. Guy was working on a Ford F150. He appropriately used an 7mm on 3 screws, but then decided to mix systems and got a 5/16th to work on some 8mm heads on a different part. This made me scratch my head, and how he made the 5/16th work I’m not that lucky. When the 7mm fit like a glove, I knew I was dealing with a metric setup and instinctively grabbed the 8mm for the screws that he used the 5/16th on. The metric system makes much more sense now and the Imperial system is weird unless it’s a 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 4/4. :o |
Title: Re: Metric System Post by Dave on 02/09/25 at 09:07:30 Don't forget to add in a vintage British bike or car and include the Whitworth wrenches in your toolbox! :o When I was in college in the late 70's we had to learn to work in both English and Metric values - as the US was headed toward a complete changeover to the metric system (remember when the road signs posted both miles and kilometers)? Since that time the Metric system seems to have faded away from government intervention - while at the same time the fasteners on the cars sold to us have silently been converted to Metric. |

Title: Re: Metric System Post by blod on 02/09/25 at 10:30:13 Fahrenheit is ridiculous. Celsius with freezing starting at 0 is a no brainer |
Title: Re: Metric System Post by Ruttly on 02/09/25 at 10:53:31 Absolute 0 in Fahrenheit is -460 while 32 is freezes water From what I remember everything above -460 is how they measure heat. 68 to 72 is just perfect. I’m positive the metric system was an AFTERTHOUGHT ! ;D |
Title: Re: Metric System Post by Ruttly on 02/09/25 at 10:57:40 And please clarify ( no brainer ) ::) |
Title: Re: Metric System Post by ThumperPaul on 02/09/25 at 10:58:58 Dave: Don’t hurt my little brain! I am now 2 hours old ever knowing about Whitworth! I had to google that! Serowbot: I WAS fast. Now it’s a good day if I can roll out of bed without pulling a hamstring! Blod: All I know about Celsius is what I learned on vacation in Mexico and that 0° is freezing. Fahrenheit is goofy. Who decided that 32° should be freezing? Why not a nice round 0, 10, 20, or 30? If someone tells me it’s 22° Celsius, I don’t know if they are cool, warm, or comfortable! |

And do the math.. Formula: (22°C × 9/5) + 32 = 71.6°F |

Well - do you know about the JIS dimple? |
Title: Re: Metric System Post by ThumperPaul on 02/09/25 at 16:15:07 That I didn’t know either! They don’t all seem to get the dimple mark though. I do really appreciate learning the importance of a JIS screwdriver. It wasn’t that long ago I learned about JIS. I’d just strip the head with a #2 Phillips and wonder why the screw was so crappy. :o :-/ |
