OH MY !  Two days from Lancers !

I've ordered a 6'x10'x72" V-nose single axle trailer to make a "Sleeper" out of for these kind of trips.  Ramp rear door and Mobile Home side door.
Maybe the Bikes in the truck and a few beds in the trailer ?

I'm not sure I'll have time to install everything needed ... like :
110 volts inverter and 12 volt battery for inverter.
Photon Catcher for said inverter and controller.
Two beds mounted that fold out of the way up on the wall.
A Galley area up in the "V-Nose"
I picture Interstate rest area and catch a nap if needed , might be better than loosing a hundred bucks on a motel bill ?    I really don't like to spending my penny's while I'm sleeping , but I do enjoy taking more bike rides !

U-Tube is full of different ways to convert Enclosed Trailers into really nice travel trailers.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfy880Uah24

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LobHc3bDWNs&t=593s

And so many more ... I don't know whitch one to call which idea is best ! ?
::)

I like the use of the front V for a kitchenette.  The "murphy beds" might work for a 50lb kid, but I see the walls pulling in and the roof collapsing with a 200lb man.  Heaven forbid 2-3 dudes try to sit on it like a bench watching a football game.  I'd go with an air mattress, chase lounger, or sleeping cots.

Y'all going to Moab, UT?  I'll miss that one.

MM:

(Perhaps you should start a thread in the Cafe' for your camper build).

I watched the videos you provided - I believe there are much better ones on YouTube than the 2 you provided.

Beds attached to the walls are fine - you will need legs that fold down along the center and the hinge points at the wall need to be attached at the vertical studs in the walls (not attached to the plywood).  You can run a horizontal strip along the wall just below the bed rail to provide continual support along the wall, the outside edge will need to be pretty stiff to avoid sagging.

Do not use vinyl house windows as the owner did in the first video.  The trailer bounces and twists as it goes down the highway - residential windows will not hold up to this kind of abuse for very long.  I used RV windows and installed an efficient ceiling fan to get airflow.

The little Chinese diesel heaters are the way to go if you plan on needing a lot of heat while "boon docking" without access to 110V power - if you can plug in use small electric heaters.  Avoid the Buddy propane heaters as they put out too much water vapor and make poisonous fumes.

Put the motorcycle inside the trailer - not in the truck bed.  Getting the motorcycles in/out of the trailer is a breeze - getting them in a truck bed is much harder.  The motorcycles will be out of the weather in the trailer and are easy to get in/out safely.  For long travels where you need to sleep along the way you should consider getting a truck bed cap and sleeping in back of the truck - the cap will help you get better fuel mileage when towing the trailer as it will help with airflow and keep a lot of wind from hitting the front of the trailer.  You can expect about an 8-10 mpg drop in mpg when pulling the trailer.  In my Vibe I would get 32mpg without the trailer and 22mpg pulling the trailer - my Explorer gets about 28mpg without the trailer and 18mpg pulling the trailer. The big RV doesn't even know I have a trailer behind it, as that big and bulky RV blocks any wind from hitting the trailer.

Start a build thread and we can discuss your trailer journey!

Thanks for trying to get this motley crew back on topic, Dave.  A Toy Hauler post in the Cafe sounds good.  As you know, I’ve also considered doing this.

I’m gunna miss you guys if y’all decide to ride Moab, UT.  I will keep following to see where things land.  Would Moab be a summer ride?

We have 2-3” of snow/ice on the ground in the Houston area this morning.  This southern town, without any real equipment, is basically shut down today and tomorrow.  So a spring ride somewhere warm sounds good about right now.  8-)

I like the use of the front V for a kitchenette.  The "murphy beds" might work for a 50lb kid, but I see the walls pulling in and the roof collapsing with a 200lb man.

Paul you just jerking me around now
Hanging a few boards on a wall is not a person sleeping on a wall.   Maybe Bat-Man could hang off a wall ?  But I want Legs under my part ?  ;D

I ordered it about two weeks ago but I got more support under the floor so I will have to wait for it to be built.   ;)   I wanted a 5'x10'x72" for the better air resistance but in the end got the 6' for the sleeping side to side maybe ?

It will take me a year to have much more than sleeping on a cot .   I think the first thing might be pull the inside walls in , the floor up and the ceiling down  and make sure the holes in the floor are really sealed for mouse and bug proof.    Then put at least an inch (or more) of insulation , windows , fan , some cabinets .
This first year I'm happy with being sealed and insulated , then acting as a rolling tent.
I do have 12 volt to 110 volt , but no solar charger or mounting system yet.    I have three inverters one each 400watt , 800 watt 2000 watt ,I'm sure plans will change repeatedly.

I think I should build a 4'x8'x48"  Tear Drop to pull behind the truck when sleeping is all that is needed.   Good thing I have a small 800watt inverter.
Building both may be the best Idea and sell the one that don't get used as much.

When I go pick the 6x10 trailer up We'll start a proper thread !  That is in no big hurry  :)

How many Westward bound bikers can sleep in a 6x10 empty trailer full of cots ?   :-?

How did they solve this problem on Wild Hogs ?   ;D

Hey MM.  Dave started a new Trailer post in The Cafe dedicated to this topic. Maybe we should move this conversation over there.  We’d have everything in one place if “we” want to refer back to it.

Lancer - This old wild hog is done sleeping with his head in the mud.

Your right Paul

About both ,  I don't think I have very many more years of camping on the ground left in me ? ... another 10 or 12 years and I'd better have a camping trailer ready .
And I'm the first to admit a few U-tube videos' is all I got so I'll take all the help I can get.

The idea of a bike in the truck and a small trailer pulled by same truck opens up just opens up all them places I've been itching to go for years !  ;)     It's always nice to have company on any adventure.

I am not likely going to be able to attend a week long group ride this year - but will pay attention to what you are planning on the outside chance I can make it work.

Deb and I had such a great time in the Texas desert last year - that we are going to take a trip to the Big Bend area.  I want to go when there is no moon so we can see the stars - and initially I thought we would go in May.  It turns out the New Moon is at the end of May, and the daytime temperatures will be hovering around 100 by then.  I called and talked to the owner of the Road Runner RV campground, and he said March is full of spring break folks and we likely could not get a campsite - so we are going in the last couple of weeks April.  Night time temperatures will likely be in the 60's with daytime temps approaching 90.  It will take about 3 days to make the trip down, and another 3 getting back home.

This will not be a motorcycle trip, as it appears to just be a hot and dusty place and not all that friendly to a sport touring bike - a lot of the area we want to explore is accessed by dirt roads or unimproved trails!  I recently sold my Pontiac Vibe that we have been using as our "towed" vehicle and bought as used Jeep as the prices have finally come down a bit.  I have always wanted to try owning a Jeep - and as I will be 70 next year I thought maybe I shouldn't wait any longer!

UPDATE:  We got the last remaining campsite at the end of March - we will be at the Road Runner campground from March 23-31.  This will allow us to get a bit cooler temperatures - our 9 year old dog Lily will certainly appreciate that!

Dave: I think I mentioned it last year, but you might want to check out the Caverns of Sonora on your way to Big Bend.  Pretty cool if you like caverns and a little geological history of the area.  Easter is 4/20.  I don't imagine tourist traffic would be too bad around Big Bend if that's when you end up out there.  I'll most likely be in the Hill Country the weekend of 4/25-4/27 for a group ride.

You don't have an adventure bike or enduro in the stable you can bring along?  You need to fix that!

Thanks for the compiment Lancer.  I am still in my late 60's.....for 10 more months!  (Birthday is 12/23).  I will then have my 70th birthday.  At this point I am still healthy and don't have any aches and pains to deal with, and getting thinner hair and some wrinkles is my only affliction.

I am blessed with very good genes on the Schroeder side of my ancestors, and they tend to be healthy for a very long time.  My grandmother almost made it to 105, her dad lived to 98, her aunt to 102.  My grandmother lived along until she was 100 and was still not on any prescription drugs.  The Whitacre side of my family is not as tough and my dad and all his brothers passed away in their 70's.  I have already lost a couple of Whitacre cousins who are younger than me.

That’s wonderful Dave.  My family is similar, some reach to 70-80 or so, while others are well into the 90’s.  My mother is 96.
My stepdad (Don) is 102 with a birthday coming up in April, and he is likely healthier than all of my family and going strong.  He still has 3 siblings who are close behind him, though they are having difficulties and need constant care.  Some of the gang has met him, Versey most recently, and can attest to his clear mind, with nearly perfect memory, and a fully functioning body, still driving, mowing on his riding mower, gardening and using his rototiller, car maintenance, etc.  He was an accountant and keeps records of everything on calendars and has done so YEARS, and can go back and find proofs of virtually anything recorded.  He is amazing.
I would not be surprised if he made it to 110.

Well , this has to do with Old and Ridding !   :-?

There was a guy who referred to me one time as "New Bike Mike" ... he might have been in reference to the number of Mikes' who were on hand at the time but I'm guessing ???

Well , Something happened today that that might have changed my situation a little.
I was enjoying my daily ride and was resetting the trip-set after filling the fuel tank and noticed ... My New Bike had crossed (was fixing to cross) 20,000 miles on this Ride !   It seems my NEW BIKE ain't NEW ANY MORE --- then I got to thinking its 2.5 years old too !    The only salvation I have is the one year old bike only has 10,000 miles on it.   I have to keep at least one LONG STROKE SINGLE  ;) .

This current tank full has 140 something miles on it and is falling below 1/2 tank full already ...  ::) ::) ::)

Title: Re: 2025 Rides

Thought I might go check my memory .

In all fairness  , that's the 1.5 lane back-roads millage , and the tank will take 3.5 gallons when the fuel light comes on with one bar left.   The small dash is the Factory GPS thing that reads off my phone and I rarely use it so it gets out of time over time. ;D
I could replace it with a Factory-Tac. ... but then I'd have to drive fast and that would by-past the "Zen" that this bike does so well !   ;D  :)

My little Kawasaki Vulcan S 650 has that nifty “Eco” mode indicator too.  I like experimenting with what combination of throttle position and RPMs makes it go off.  ;D

It’s somewhere around over half throttle and over 5k rpms.  If I hammer the throttle from around 2.5k rpms, it goes off too.

I’m trying to behave and keep the ECO light on.  I’m still trying to master “zen” riding.  Congrats on 20k miles on your easy rider!

I believe that "New Bike Mike" was assigned as most of us were riding what we already had.....or buying used bikes - while you had a string of new ones.  Moto Guzzi V7, Moto Guzzi V9, Royal Enfield Meteor - Royal Enfield Super Meteor.  It is great that you can find new bikes you like and we fully support you in that - but with it you acquired a new nick name.

I am not as obsessed with my mpg as you are - and maybe you would enjoy your riding more if you didn't focus on mpg so much.  Your bikes get good mpg - a lot of things out of your control can have a negative affect on the mpg (wind, traffic, temperature, humidity, length of trip, quality of fuel, elevation, topography, etc.).  And fuel can evaporate out of the tank over time while the bike is parked.

Riding is fun - regardless of the mpg.  When the tank is near empty it needs to be filled again - repeat as necessary! ;)

And your bikes may not be "Brand" new - but you did buy them new and they are not anywhere near being old.  My 2016 F800 has 30,000 miles, R1200RT 18,000 miles, 2007 Savage 16,000 miles, 1984 Honda CT110 2,700 miles, 1972 BMW R75/5 60,000 miles.

Last Saturday I was on an errand with my neighbor to pick up some tubes to put around his small trees so the deer don't destroy them.  We stopped at the Cincinnati BMW motorcycle dealership as it was on the way and it seemed like the proper thing to do.  They had a 2002 K1200RS with 90,000 miles on it, and an 2014 R1200RT with 108,000 miles - they both looked brand new ready for many more years of open road adventure!  They weren't new - but they certainly didn't look used up or old!

I agree for the most part. In the U.S., gas is cheap and our salaries are high enough to afford a lot of it when compared to other countries. Even as a broke 21 year old a few years ago, I was able to drive an 11mpg hot rod to work and college on a daily basis. It wasn't ideal but it was easily doable.

I could understand worrying about MPG in other less wealthy countries. For example, I went to the Philippines a few times. The gas there cost significantly more than the USA, yet they make not even 1/10th the average American salary. Even the Savage could eat up the average persons salary very quickly just by buying gas. I would say 60-70mpg is about minimum over there. Many people need 100mpg to be able to afford to ride their machine.  For comparison, it would cost the average person an entire day's salary just to fill up a small 50 to 125 cc scooter with name brand gas, such as shell. If we had to spend a similar ratio to our income on a fillup, that would be like 150 dollars for the average American.

I'll end it with this. If you can afford multiple new(er) bikes, you don't need to worry about mpg.

I'm very far from being good but I'm working on being better !   ::)

Besides , it's a Fun Game Playing  "How High Can the Fuel Millage Go ! "

:)
........

I know a feller in our local CMA that his Harley gets the same mpg as my truck ... he's never even heard of the term Carbon Footprint   :( :( :(

He's a lot like the folks who use a 1 Ton truck for a Commuter Vehicle ???  ::)

OK , I'm done !  :)

I guess I don't get the environmental sentiment. Oh well. I do applaud you for taking the reasonable route of lower gas consumption versus electric vehicles. I cannot stand EV's. I don't care if others own them, but I never will.

As for gas savings, I have thought about getting a Classic 350 for putting around on. Running errands. Going to the gym or work possibly. etc. And for looking at. Keeping it clean and passing it down one day. They are so beautiful.

Title: Re: 2025 Rides
Post by Dave on 02/06/25 at 16:40:52

I seriously doubt that your motorcycle has much of an effect on the worldwide carbon content.  You have bought modern, efficient motorcycles with catalytic converters, fuel injection and oxygen sensors that monitor your fuel mixture many times a second - you are doing your part.

Have fun on them - don't get overly fussy about the mpg.  I once rode my little Ninja 250 very carefully around TN/NC the day before the others arrived - and I got 77mpg on it.  It was cool - but that is the last time I paid any attention.  I knew it ran well and got good mpg - so I didn't worry about it after that.  The fuel tank held enough that I could go 400 miles before I needed fuel - it lasted far longer than my bladder could!

We will all be fine. The average car gets good mpg nowadays.

I understand your sentiment though. I bought a 22 manual corolla hatch for a fun daily gas saver. It did me very good during those crazy gas prices a year or two ago.

Some would say that the Cow Farts coming from your property are hurting the environment - I know for sure that down the road from your house at Jack Daniels the barrel toasting they do will put out far more pollutants than your motorcycles!

You aren't driving a monster truck, your aren't making 8 trips a day hauling a bunch of kids to the mall/school/soccer/band practice/etc.  You likely have a carbon footprints smaller than most.

Don't be pointing no fingers at my beloved Jack Daniels  :D ;D

In all seriousness though, you are right, but I will add a caveat. Personal vehicles really don't pollute that much. Cargo ships, planes, factories, etc all pollute so much that if every person stopped driving, it wouldn't so much as make a dent in the pollution numbers. Oh well. For reference, one cargo ship can pollute as much as 50 million cars worth... Yikes. There's about 60,000 cargo ships out there. Oh well

Well Dave , Did I ever tell ya about the time I Lassoed a 800 pound Heffer ?    I can assure ya that a 800 pound Bear an't got nothing on an 800 Heffer !

I couldn't turn loose of that rope fast enough NOT to get rope burn !   ;D

;D ;D

But it wasn't really funny at the time !   :o    Yea it was a 1" old grass rope.   Ruff as a corn cob !   I don't know what I was thinking except "That cow needs to be over here !"

After I got the CJ-5 and ran down the end of the rope trailing that Heffer - and slammed on the brakes she didn't think it was quite as funny either !   >:(   Then I tied the rope to the trailer hitch and we got in complete agreement on where we should go - everything turned out OK ... after them blisters healed up !    :-?

For a dumb animal , they get hella devious when they’re not behind a fence.   Run you down and grind you into the dirt just for fun. When they know their free  they ain’t havin anything to do with going back in the field. Got to get the biggest cow to go first the rest will usually follow. The biggest on the ranch across the street was a 1500 lb Brama bull  friendly , butt a 1500 lb cow as big as a limousine was the wild one. You could move her but she was just setting you up to get at you at a pinch point or when you’re not looking. She would lead you to a danger zone and then stop and give you a look then try to crush you into barb wire or a gate. Not a nice cow at all , she had a mean streak !

My dad used to breed Simental beef cattle.  There are a huge breed where bulls reach 2500 lbs and cows can reach 2000 lbs.  Fortunately, they are a calm breed generally, but even a friendly animal can hurt/kill you by accidentally moving in the wrong direction at the wrong time.

I have heard of folks with horses/ponies that they cannot get broken to lead.

So.....they fasten them to a cow for a few days and they learn!

;)

I had a cow (full grown) charge me with intent to kill one day .   We were in a 6 foot alley way with her and there wasn't no where for me to go to get away.   I got to tell the rest of the story in person ... but there is a way to stop them !  ;)     Remind me to share it some day  after a ride

True Story !

We'll deside who gets to play the cow ?   ;D
