Title: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by RYCA-Pierce on 12/12/24 at 15:10:35 Hello! My name is Pierce! My family friend, Robert has passed. (Went by Gyrobob on the forum) I bought his bike from his wife to help out with the adjustments. He let the bike sit for a while so I had to clean it internally completely. I understand the RYCA setup great, I have the other RYCA bob had build in his (Double RYCA Build) posted in the forums. I Got it to fire up but won’t idle good at all. I’ve cleaned the carb 5 times and checked for pinholes in the diaphragms. Checked spark, spark plug, clean gas, clean tank, new petcock, new battery, check voltage with load, starting fluid, Robert had the bike running GREAT! The carbs DO NOT need to be rejetted. He was a mastermind and so smart. Check out his old profile (Gyrobob). I added a link to a video so you can get a better idea since it’s in depth. But please help. I want to see the his wife smile from the bike, one time at least… https://www.reddit.com/r/Fixxit/comments/1hcx8pb/help_wont_idle_suzuki_ls650_savage_02/ |
Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by JOG on 12/12/24 at 16:32:59 You don't have the choke pulled? Don't let it idle on the sidestand. The cam doesn't get oiled right. The idle speed adjustment might be set too low. Welcome to The Asylum! Step across it, stand it up in Neutral. Fire it up. Using the throttle, does it run okay if you keep the rpm up,like an easy cruise down the road? How low can you get it before it quits? I forget the minimum safe rpm. It's gotta be ticking along good enough to make ten or so mph. |
Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by RYCA-Pierce on 12/12/24 at 17:31:10 When the choke is pulled, the bike has a harder time starting for some reason. It backfires through the carb really bad as well when I pull the choke. The bike is strapped perfectly straight up to a trailer for the mean time I’ll take it off tomorrow and see what kind of riding I can do on it before it dies. If I give it throttle sometimes it revs perfectly and returns back to idle. Other times my throttle seems to kill it. And this is in the same session of trying to get it to idle Idle for the Suzuki savage is 1,100RPM I can get it there but it won’t last long until is snuffs out |

Maybe dirt in the bowl? but you cleaned the carb... tough one. Is it a stock carb? 0B353E232E232E4C0 wrote:

Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by RYCA-Pierce on 12/12/24 at 18:56:24 The verslagen! Thank you for your condolences. Yeah the VM38 bike I don’t know who’s that was, but Jud (uncle) had the other RYCA I manage to buy. He had a VM36 that was severely jetted wrong, I rejetted the bike and it was a great bike until it got stolen and almost ruined. A lot of work needs to be done to clean up that RYCA. I cleaned the VM36 I had on the one RYCA and threw it on GYROBOBs bike and it did the same thing as the stock carb. Stock carb on it now. Cleaned the filter with filter cleaner and sprayed the oil as needed. Valves?? Thank you for taking time to reply and think about what could be the issue, been on the forum for a while reading all of y’alls information and it’s been so helpful. |

Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by oldNslow on 12/13/24 at 04:59:29 "You changed carburetors and the problem stayed the same?" Intake manifold leak maybe. Check the rubber dealey that the carb plugs in to on the head for cracks or if it's gotten rock hard from age and wont seal even if the clamp is tight. If you can get the bike to idle at all for a little while try spraying some carb cleaner or brakeclean around the joint. If the idle goes up or down while you're spraying you've got a leak there. |

Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by Gary_in_NJ on 12/13/24 at 06:36:01 Sorry to hear about Bob's passing. 1. Stop twisting the throttle when you engage the starter. These are not pumper carbs. The carb is designed to provide proper fueling for starting with a closed throttle. 2. When you say you "cleaned the carb" 5 times, does that include replacing the jets at least once? Brass is cheap, throw the clogged jets in the trash and get genuine replacements. |
Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by Ruttly on 12/13/24 at 09:59:49 R.I.P. Bob , Pierce may be time to open engine , I would want to inspect cam chain on right and stator on the left. Carb & petcock don’t seem to be issue. Usually ignition controller either works or not but I would try another before opening engine. You need to try a spark tester to see if it’s not sparking when it’s not starting. Loose pickup at stator , crushed wiring or loose corroded connections. Do not give up , it’s a process of elimination and your almost there ! |
Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by JOG on 12/13/24 at 10:10:11 If you check spark with the plug out it can lie to you. Under compression the starter eats power. Pull the plug, it might spark. Put it in, no spark. |
Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by RYCA-Pierce on 12/13/24 at 14:03:47 Thank you all for condolences and ideas! Gonna order some parts like the jet and new spark plug. Gonna check out the possible leak. And yes sir Mr.JOG same symptoms different carb. So just by using the ol’ noggin we can deduce that the carb is likely not the problem in this case. |
Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by Ruttly on 12/13/24 at 21:24:06 Does it still have decomp system ? |

I had typed And you're still looking at the carburetor? But deleted that. It sounded snotty when I read it. |
Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by RYCA-Pierce on 12/14/24 at 06:51:48 Yep, Still has the decomp system. I see what you mean now, JOG. My bad lol |
Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by Ruttly on 12/14/24 at 11:17:54 Possible decomp hanging up keeping ex valve open then releases and starts. Keep at it , almost there ! |
Title: Re: HELP! RYCA won’t idle. GYROBOBS RYCA Post by RYCA-Pierce on 12/21/24 at 16:28:49 UPDATE! Okay! Good head way! I track a lot of the electrical down. I changed the “magic black box”, coil, spark plug. It started right up! It’s not idling well still, I can run it up and down the street real quick before it dies on me. I can’t run it off choke long. It’ll run without it for a half a minute then it’ll slowly sputter out. Changed to my VM36 carb to see what would happen, it was much worse. It idled on the vm36 but you couldn’t give it gas or take it off choke. I think I got carb work ahead of me…again lol. I emailed Lancer to see if I could buy a VM36 Jet Kit from him *fingers crossed*. I figured I’d work on the VM36 instead of the stock CV considering it’s an upgrade for the bike. I do wonder about the CV, maybe I’ll get nosy/curious about what’s going on with it and try it again. Just wanted to Update y’all, thank you! |
