 I'm not sure that has anything to do with being genuine.  

 If anything, changing one's mind because the alternative is worse in your eyes is more genuine than blindly supporting something/someone even if you think it's the bad option.

 Example 1.

I support Candidate 1 over Candidate 2
I see that Candidate 1 has poor policy/ideas.
I change my mind due to the ideas of Candidate 1 being worse than the other  option.
I say I no longer support Candidate 1.

 Am I genuine?

 
I support Candidate 1 over Candidate 2

I thought I made a few points that were worthy of conversation.
