Title: Idle Speed, No Tach Post by ThumperPaul on 08/29/24 at 05:22:47 I know this has been discussed before, but it’s a worthy topic. Idle Speed, but I ain’t got no tach (many people, stock bike)…. Actually, I have a decent tach but do I believe it??! Idling too low is no good…. Bike barely has any oil pressure in the head with a fast idle…. I think the recommended spec is 1100rpm. I know some members have mentioned 1200-1300. My tach reads about 1250 when the bike is up to operating temperature. But, do I believe it? I’m gunna try to verify with an external tach, but will I believe it? Which one do I believe?! Average the results? Humm… My ear is good enough to know the beat shouldn’t be as slow as Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man” intro. Don’t try to make it lobe like a Harley. Sounds cool, but deadly. https://youtu.be/qRcYjJQ0JHg?si=swoYOvXRpAVJsEl_ Is Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” too fast? https://youtu.be/6tlSx0jkuLM?si=ZSMk24aaYO9XntoV Is there a tune in the middle, maybe some Aerosmith or Pink Floyd?? |
Title: Re: Idle Speed, No Tach Post by JOG on 08/29/24 at 16:28:00 IIRC a Redneck solution is get somewhere level, ish,, no strong wind, idle in first, Ottsta make 10 mph,,mehh,,12.. At least ten.. A higher idle doesn't come with a penalty,, a sexy loping thump? That is probably going to be expensive. |

When your engine is turning 1,100 rpm.....there are 550 exhaust pulses per minute. Play the 550bpm and match the frequency with your idle speed! |

Or so they say. Maybe if it was monotone, and with more of a Dyna accent. Poke one ear bud in,turn it up to 11? Put a hand behind the exhaust and listen? Don't forget to stand it up some. Keep the cam happy. |

I get the concept, but I can’t get the metronome link you shared to crank up past 218bpm. It maxes out at 218. Maybe it’s my browser or I’m just not techno-savvy enough to figure it out. |

Title: Re: Idle Speed, No Tach Post by ohiomoto on 08/30/24 at 17:08:30 Sorry guys. I didn't test the Google metronome. |
Title: Re: Idle Speed, No Tach Post by ThumperPaul on 08/31/24 at 04:12:23 All good, Ohiomoto! Dave - Nice find on that one! Play that while listening to the exhaust and you’ll think you need a complete valve job! The tone of the metronome sound that is. The sound when you definitely need to check the valve lash! lol. |
