Title: Clutch Release Cam Broken
Post by ThumperPaul on 07/15/24 at 08:14:48

Is this typically where the clutch release cam breaks?  Nice clean break.  It’s where the push rod contacts it at the stop area of the cam.  Looking for the chunk that broke off now.

Push rod too long?  I’m just starting to dive in so I don’t have any other details at this stage.

It has the “standard” original 45.5mm push rod.

Time to start measuring the discs and fiber plates I guess.

While I had my expensive Harbor Freight digital caliper handy, I’m getting about 16.5mm on the plunger of the cam chain adjuster.  Getting close to needing something…. Versy CCT, rear tensioner, chain…. Who knows…. Drop $400 and replace everything!  More inspection needed.

Wow.  The cam wasn’t broke.  It was installed backwards and the push rod just started making its own divot.  Here’s a pic next to an old cam I had lying around.

And the other side where the poor thing had a homemade divot trying to form from the push rod hammering and mashing it.

When they break.....it looks more like this.

Oh dang!  Definitely broke!  My situation explains why I couldn’t find a chunk somewhere.  Just some tiny metal filings.

Hard to get a good photo with lighting and glare, but the shaft looks pretty decent.

All fixed!  Found that within 5 minutes of having the cover off.  Makes me wonder what else I’ll find as I keep digging.

The ORing that stops lion from going out the shaft, to drizzle down the case costs about quarter. I'd put a new one in

Yup. I had an extra one lying around handy.  Dun!

That release cam is very interesting.  It is super-duper hard.  I am amazed that the pushrod could wear into it like that.  What does the end of the pushrod look like?

Thanks for the pics.

Mike, it still measures 45.5mm.  It’s still rounded on the end.  You can kinda see where it was beating the hell out of the cam.  It’s not a mega hard Sneeze clutch cam, but the fact the pushrod could start making its own divot had me saying “whoa”.

Here’s a couple pics.  Hard to get a good photo with glare, lighting, reflection.

Maybe it’s a custom 45.4mm pushrod now.  But it still has it’s shape, and it’s been pushing.

Unfortunately my AR500 clutch cam inventory went up in flames with my shop.  Those that got one may have gotten the last of them.   :'(

I saw some of the pics and what you’re dealing with on the insurance investigation and claim.  I’m so sorry Sneeze!  That is truly tragic and devastating!  Any progress with the insurance claim?  Were you making the cams yourself or did you have someone making them?

I had a local company manufacture them for me.  I have no stock pieces to fit check them with anymore.

I am still waiting on the structure settlement, so I can start the demolition and rebuild.  If insurance is involved, nothing happens quickly.  :-[
