Title: CDI/Ignitor replacement or cheaper alternatives? Post by Bookrider on 07/13/24 at 14:52:17 I have an '87 and the ignitor just fried itself... I looked online and they're way more expensive than I'd like them to be. Is there a source cheaper than the $300+ on eBay? Or maybe a different, cheaper CDI that would work with our bikes? Or even a diagram showing what parts are where in the ignitor so I can possibly solder a new piece in? Or heck, just a charitable soul willing to part with a piece of a broken bike they've got? I'm desperate at this point. This bike has become a Thesseus's Ship situation with all the parts I've replaced on it, and when I finally have it road legal, registered and all that, it kicks out on me once again. I love this bike, despite it's constant issues, and I just want to see it on the road like it deserves. I've attached a pic of the ignitor, the black chip on the metal piece is what fried. Help me, Savageforums Kenobi, you're my only hope. |

Title: Re: CDI/Ignitor replacement or cheaper alternative Post by ThumperPaul on 07/13/24 at 15:21:05 Following to see the responses and if an aftermarket alternative exits. Our bikes technically have a TCI and it works differently than a CDI with coil. I wish you would have caught me 2 weeks ago. I just sold one on E.Bay for $150. I could have taken less without all the ebay fees. I've seen people repair them, but that's way above my pay grade. Good luck. I hope you get Bon Jovi running again soon without it costing a small fortune! |
Title: Re: CDI/Ignitor replacement or cheaper alternative Post by verslagen1 on 07/13/24 at 21:29:35 That's a power transducer that typically blows due to over heating. Maybe some left the key on over nite? Here's a link to the tech section article... http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1293638302/0 As to finding a cheaper replacement cross referenced to another bike... You might look at the 250 thumper but you'll need to check timing and I don't know the power requirements of ignition systems. I might have a spare '88 ig box, I'll need to look for it. |
Title: Re: CDI/Ignitor replacement or cheaper alternative Post by Bookrider on 07/13/24 at 23:46:39 @verslagen Key wasn't left on, (this time...), but there was water in the ignitor due to some rain. I redid all my wiring to use a central fuseblock, and it popped the 5 amp fuse I had giving the ignitor power, so it wasn't a massive power surge I don't think. I think I was just too careless and when the rain went sideways it wound up under my saddle and into the ignitor housing. Whatever solution I find, it's going to get some silicone caulking until it can float! |
