I got this petcock that said it would fit the Yamaha I've heard mentioned, but it cant mount against the hole in the tank, the tank flange is in the way. I'd have to grind almost all of the flange down at that spot to make this fit.
Is that what we do? Do I risk going though the tank if I grind that flange off at that spot?

You got the wrong petcock....the one with the short stem. It does not fit the Savage.

What specifically did you buy? What you need is YAMAHA part number 5LP-24500-01-00

You should have ordered the genuine Yamaha part....not a cheap copy.

Some of the folks who bought copies have had the brass outlet tube come loose!

If you have a hungry engine ya really have to buy the Yamaha petcock. I’d bet many here have a copy on the shelf , remember we been there and done that. The copies don’t flow as much fuel either and it does make a difference. The Yamaha Raptor petcock is a direct bolt on , no mods , just plug old vacuum hose. The best upgrade for dependability , no pushing but riding home.

do not grind that flange!

you'll break the weld and it'll leak.

I bought a cheap copy once, it looked identical to the oem one but for some reason it didn't work on reserve so I ended up needing a tow.

Im not grinding the flange. Thanks those shared their knowledge on this., and the shared experience from you other cheap petcock buyers. I'll make do with this till i can afford the real one.

I've gone with the cheap copy version of the Raptor on 4 non-running project bikes. I'm cheap and I didn't want to spend the extra money until I knew the bike would run.

I haven't had any problems with this brand.

Maybe time will tell... It has the 8mm outlet nipple (flows plenty of fuel). the mesh screen filters stay on the intake tubes, material seems good, functions smoothly and accurately, and the rubber gasket is beefy.

The real cheap $8.99 specials on E.Bay are crap (trust me, I tried, I know - 6mm outlet nipple, screen filters slip right off, and the rubber gasket is so thin it leaks, clunky function).
