Title: Redtosh
Post by Redtosh on 07/02/24 at 01:36:55

hello, I have a LS 650 - 92 year, I have a problem with the valves knocking, after adjustment it continues. After disassembly and inspection, I found a radial play on the sprocket of the timing chain, is this normal or is it a problem?

Hi Red, tech section is for fixes not questions.

You need to describe your problem more as we cannot see what you're doing and when you've done it.

How did you see the radial play?  I can't imagine the sprocket moving with the chain tension on it and it being bolted to the cam.

The valves will always tick a bit as being too tight is as much a problem as too tight.  And it can be difficult to adjust both valves identically.

Hello, after an incompetent intervention when changing the clutch and timing chain, it started to knock very loudly somewhere in the motor, I adjusted the valves according to the repair manual, but the problem remained, in between it temporarily started to oil the cylinder and the head and I had to disassemble them and this it made an impression on me. I can make a video of the chain and knock after I put them back together if the problem persists. Thank you for the information.

I hope it isn't the situation where the oil pump drive pin fell out - and you are not pumping any oil through the engine!

There is a small pin in the gear behind the clutch that can fall out when you take the clutch apart, and if it is gone you are not driving the oil pump.  The knocking could be the parts without oil self destructing.

Find the gear behind the clutch and the other gear just forward of that - see if you can turn those gears without the clutch turning.
