I bought a set and tried to install them. The brake cable and swing arm jam into the exhaust before the shocks are even close to going on the bolts. Guys that did this how did you get around this?

Waiting for someone with experience to respond to this.

I'm guessing you have to jack the bike up and get the rear wheel off the ground. That will let the swing arm drop and hang giving you a little space. Then you probably need a bottle jack and chunk of wood placed on top of the rear tire pressing up on the fender to create the lift/spread you need.

The swing arm hits the exhaust, it can't go down.

I don't recall having this problem, but my savage is far from stock.

What year shocks did you get?

Mine are 2008 and about 11 1/2" long.

The swing arm is well above the muffler with the shocks installed. Once you loosen and remove the shocks, the swing arm will want to move down and hit the muffler. You are going to have to get the weight off the swing arms by lifting and supporting the rear end. You need something to play the temporary role of the shock. Hang the rear end up from the rafters using some ratchet straps.

I am not sure you can do the Intruder shocks with the stock muffler.

Seems odd you can’t stretch the space for the longer shock without the swing arm sinking down and hitting the muffler. I’m visualizing the upper frame and swing arm working like a pair of scissors. Maintain the swing arm position and lift the upper part of the frame.

Good time to get a Sporty muffler.
I also had an issue with a bolt under the front pulley cover... I switched it to a round head allen bolt.
... and the front of the belt guard. A little trim or I ditched the guard.

It's all little stuff... and worth the trouble 8-)

Paul:

You likely took that photo of the swing arm/muffler with the bike sitting on the ground. If you took the weight off the rear wheel you would likely see the bolts/muffler are much closer - and it gets worse when you do this with a shock that is 1.5" longer!

There is interference with the long shocks and the stock muffler and the stock muffler needs to be replaced with something. Also as mentioned, the lower chrome belt guard needs to be trimmed as it hits the aluminum pulley cover.

Sorry Dave.

Yes the bike is resting on the side stand in the photo. Apparently, I'm not grasping that the extra spread needed for the longer shocks must at least be partially created by the swing arm dropping down some. I was thinking the extra length needed could all be gained by raising it up under the seat frame/fender. My bad. I'll shut up now!!

05 Intruder shocks 12 1/4 long. 1st thing that hits is the brake cable- rubber boot assembly then the entire swing arm. Thats at about 11.5 inch shock, Would have to completely remove the muffler then move the brake bracket-cable assembly. With the dyna exhaust I think it would work but I have that sold, it wasn't my cup of tea.
