Hiya,,
Looks like they quit making our bikes.
Do better, Suzuki

Welcome back.

If you want to ride and not tinker.....you need to buy a very late model Savage in excellent condition.  Something that has not been in storage and is fresh!

Or - maybe you need to look for something other than a Savage and buy a more current design.  Modern bikes have fuel injection and ABS and they can be far more reliable than the Savage.

MMRanch likes his Royal Enfields - do you have a RE dealer anywhere near where you live?  Stewmills just bought a used Honda NC700X and really likes it.  The NC700 has footpegs under the rider - the CTX700 has the footpegs forward.  The Honda Rebels are a bit funky looking - but I bet they are reliable.  The Kawasaki Vulcan S would be a good small cruiser with plenty of power to get the job done.  The new Triumph Speed 400 single is a great looking bike!

Dave,I'm serious about Light weight, low seat height, after that, economy.
I'm not seeing road trips over thirty to maybe fifty miles. I'll go look at the ones you mentioned. The RE options are cool. And less tinkering is A major goal.
Suggestions appreciated

I went to an RE show day, and found them to be a good bit taller than a Savage
A Yamaha Virago 250 is super low and light, bulletproof,  and surprisingly highway capable
I don't think they still make them though

Honda Rebel 300 or 500 if you want a dependable cruiser.  Water cooled, fuel injected, low seat, mid'ish controls, and comes in at 400 lbs wet.  Honda builds the highest quality bikes IMO (followed by Yamaha).

A friend of mine has just seen the Triumph 400 at a dealer.  He said the build quality is excellent - it is just as nice as his Bonneville.

It has 39.5 HP at 8,000 rpm - more than the Savage and the power therefore is most likely in the upper rpm range.  I expect it will not have as much bottom end torque as the Savage.  (The Royal Enfield Meteor is 20.2 HP at 6,100rpm).

It weighs 375 pounds.  A bit more than the Savage.

The Speed 400 has mid mount footpegs.  I like this better than the cruiser style forward pegs as it puts less weight on my butt - however this is a personal thing and a lot of folks prefer the feet forward style bikes.

Hello there Graybeard

My wife keeps me clean shaving but I think beards are just fine !  ;D

Hay , I was looking at the pair of Triumph 400cc bike too !  They look good and are plenty of HP but the Torque figures are not much more than the RE 350 bikes.
That being said , the RE 350 Hunter is a really low price machine and doesn't have the Speed-Limiter like the rest of the 350cc line-up.
I've put the DNA air-intake , the 20% increase CAM , and the Free-Flow Exaust on mine and turned the 21HP into about 25-26HP , but it's still a 350cc / 55-65mph / cruiser .   It will do 74mph before the LIMITER or a HILL gets in the way.     But I wouldn't  Hesitate to take it on any long adventure ridding along at 65mph , its geared to red-line(6100rpm) 5th gear about 90-95mph.   Oh , there the thing about MPG , I usually get between 80 to 90 mpg. ridding locally.    I call it my Zen Bike .  ;)

I also have the Big Brother to this one , The 650cc Super Meteor ... its an Eight thousand dollar , 50hp-ish , 500 pound-ish - bike with a seat long enough for 2.5 people my size , its my "WE" bike .  ;D

I'm sure I'd get along with the Triumph 400cc bikes just as well , but they might be a little bit harder on the wallet ?

Since MMRanch enjoys talking bore x stroke:

The Triumph 400 has a 89.3 bore x 64.5 stroke and 12:1 compression.

The Meteor 350 has a 72 bore x 85.8 stroke and 9.5:1 compression.

It therefore is obvious the Triumph is geared toward performance with 39.5 HP at 8,000 rpm and 27.7 ft/lb torque at 6,100 rpm - while the Meteor is geared toward torque and a smooth pull with 20 HP at 6.100 rpm and 19.9 ft/lbs torque at a low 4,000 rpm.

I have ridden MM's 350 Meteor and the seating position is really comfy.
I have not ridden, or sat on or even seen a Triumph 400 in person - but I suspect the traditional seating layout is a bit less comfy and more like any "standard/retro" layout.

The Triumph will likely feel more spirited - the Royal Enfield will likely feel more relaxed.

Zen ,   is Nice and Easy , I just ordered a Belt Drive system for it.  Yes its Comfortable enough that I don't even care that it don't have excess power.  It has good enough torque for "Off the Super-Slab" ridding.
Also
There is a 410cc kit for it that replaces the 72mm bore with a 78mm bore.  If a person wanted to have Torque to match the 400 Triumph .   Some times there just ain't no Replacement for Displacement.    :-?    :-? :-?

If I had know I would be having a 650 Meteor then I might have got the 350 Hunter and put dual sport tires on it.

MM:

The Hunter is a  "Scrambler" type of motorcycle - with limited suspension travel and not much ground clearance, and it is likely not geared very low.  I doubt it would be very good for off road riding.  You really need the Himalaya if you are wanting to get off the pavement.

Them Dern-Dern-Dern  SPOKE-WHEELS with INTER-TUBES .    ;D

You know I'm not really going Dirt Racing.     More like Shinko 705's and an occasional ride through a field .    That 350-J motor is just busting out all over with torque even at idle speed.   Even with a larger front sprocket it idles in first gear without any jerking (1200 rpm) at a fast walk/shuffle.

I rode a 411cc Himalayan , it was tall but didn't seem any more powerful than my modified 350.   It also vibrated like a 1970's bike.  I do like the looks of the Scram 411 , but there are those inter tubes again ...

That Triumph 400 Scrambler would be the REAL SCRAMBLER !     Maybe when the Super Meteor gets too heavy ?   But the shorter Triumph 400 might fit better by then ?    I'm not sure Marcia would like the back seat of the Triumph  , I'm sure she likes the room of the Super Meteor's seat , I forget she is back there sometimes !
...........

This might help ya get a "Short-List" , I've got that same helmet , but I don't turn mine around backward ...  ;)

Hay Graybeard look at this ...

..............

Dave , looking at this makes me think of the XR350 that Honda made long ago .
Maybe its only the short rake and the up swept pipe ?   I believe its also lighter than the other 350's.   Yes ... a skid plate is available for it. ;D

Well, IDK what the Triumph costs, and it's too late for crying. I got a Kawasaki ELimbinator, 450 parallel twin. OTD with an Additional three years of warranty for $8,500.00. Paid in full. I got $750.00 off because I wrote a check. I parked it tonight at 8:00 with 61 miles on it. It had 1 mile on it when I fired it up. I'm gonna need to raise the bars a bit and get them tilted back some. I'm probably going to wish the pegs were a little lower. But I'm thinking the Lucerne milk crate, circa November,1954,a month older than me, will mount across the fender and make a hanger for bags.

It's actually called an Eliminator, but ELimbinator just seems fitting.

Got mashed 8/13/19,haven't ridden since. The body is gonna be sore. It's not easy keeping the revs down around 4k..
It's short,it's a little heavier than the Suzuki, but it's balanced really well. It's white,a gray one was sitting next to it. I Like the gray, but I don't want to look like asphalt ever again.
Maybe I should get it Wrapped in International Orange and get a sand dunes flag to fly..

Pay attention Ruttly.. I'll have you getting Red Xs on everything you write.

Hay Graybeard ... that is one fine looking machine !     8-) 8-) 8-)

.................

yeaaa , that bike will have twice the HP as my little 350 RE !     I'm thinking somewhere up it the mid to upper 40's HP.
You'll be keeping up with anybody with that bike.   Hay ... Remember there are speed-limits out there for a good reason  (most of the time).  ;D

I have to ask :   What was it that made you pick the Kawasaki over one of the Honda 500cc bikes ?   :-?

I was walking around, looking at bikes. No Rebels in the house. I saw the Kawi, sat on it, eyeballs it, wiggled it back and forth, asked what it is, and had enough shopping. I hope I don't wish I had been patient and actually Shopped,,I was really just So Ready for a bike I just bought the Kawi, the Triumph is really good looking..
The Kawi has, IIRC, around 47 hp,it's light enough,, it's got a Big turn radius, the ergonomics are borderline, but I'm pretty sure I can get it set up to suit me.
Why did I buy it?
I was just Hungry for a bike and tired of waiting. And I think it's a good machine.

Title: Re: I have Arriven

You can't go wrong with a mid sized twin - they have all the power you need to ride the back roads or hit the interstate highway.  As much as I love a big single in the mountains - they are not as good as a twin when you want to do some highway traveling.

That Eliminator is just a smaller version of the 650cc Vulcan S that I recommended earlier.....I didn't know they made that type of bike in a 450cc bike.

I hope the new bike and new life situation works out well. :)

(PS - Stay out of the Tall Table.  It is a hateful place).

Title: Re: I have Arriven
Post by Graybeard on 05/26/24 at 04:30:55

I've walked around in there. Looked at the little signs on the tables. Even stopped by and listened in on a few. Irrelevant, futile and pointless,, but I knew that even when I was still a participant. It's pretty obvious it's pointless when irrefutable Fact is shrugged off because They don't want to see it..
I really didn't ever see me get tired of wrenching, or pointing out stupid for stupid people,, but time marches on,we change. Would I be tired of wrenching If it didn't hurt? Hmm,,,Atsa good question.
I Really expected the right shoulder to be a focal point this morning. It was burning when I got the bike parked. And Yeah, the MoFo Is sore, but everything else is sore enough that the shoulder is not really that big of a deal. If Day 1 is any indicator, it's at
least good for the BP.

Ruttly,,type it like ya say it,, No amount of personalized, dedicated, one on one tutoring izgonna help if you suffer from proper diction and good grammar.
I'm not even struggling to Not involve myself in the Table. Good advice, Dave. I'm still glad it's There.

Thanks for posting the pictures! I guess you remember my computer Skills.. It's got about 220 miles on it now. It had a long day.
I have a question about chains.
Those ORings protect the area where the pins go through, right?
How does the Oil get To that spot?I'm thinking it doesn't..

O-ring chains are pretty much sealed, and it keeps the dirt/water out and the oil inside the pins.  When you clean and oil an O-ring chain you are basically just cleaning and rustproofing the outside - none of the oil gets on the inside.  You are better off using a lube that is specifically for O-ring chains, as you want something that is not waxy or sticky and will collect dirt.  Also you should keep pressure washers away from the chain, as a high pressure blast of water might get past the O-rings and put water inside the rollers/pins.

Title: Re: I have Arriven
Post by Graybeard on 05/27/24 at 08:38:50

Okay,, pressure washer directed at the chain, notta good idea. Hadn't thought of that.
YaKnow, I started out hunting for another Savage. I'm glad that didn't work out. When the bars are up closer, that thing is gonna be some kinda Allrite.. Just 380 miles to first service. I'll pick up the manual and order a helmet tomorrow. Didn't have a way to haul Anything on it, and IDK how many miles it takes at the
Don't rev it over 4k rpm before it bumps up to
Don't rev it over 6k.
It's got wheels for Tubeless tires,,sweet. And a spin on oil filter,, So twenty first century.
I looked at Mobil 10-40, which the internet says is a doable substitute for the Kawi oil, but I didn't trust the Brag Factors they had on the back of the jug to align with the Kawi oil. It's not scary low,but it's not full anymore either. It's easier to haul this thing up to eyeball the window.
No Petcock! A gas gauge and a Tach,,and the transmission is easy,,clutchless shifts are pretty easy,, still working on that,up away from first,, Ohh! They did Something to make hitting neutral easy. But ya gotta be stopped for it to kick in. Hitting Neutral rolling up,brakes applied, is pretty dodgy..I'm digging Everything but the ergonomics with the bars. And that is solveable,, but not today.. That thing is gonna be an Across Town little dude. Groceries, gasoline, errands and fishing,,
It's good to have a bike again.

Im running Mobil 1 , 0w40 in the winter and have Mobil 1 15w50 in now for the summer .

It seems like a fine oil to me.   Maybe Shell "T-6 5w40" might be better ?  :-/
But my owners book say's 15w50  ...   and in the summer it makes sense ! .
Now days I'd think any of the 100% Synthetic oils would be way ahead of Yester-year's oils.

I really don't know what to think yet. I'll probably bite the bullet and stick with Kawi oil at least for the first service. There is a forum I'm going to check out. I've got a warranty and sure don't want trouble with it.
What bike are you talking about? If I missed it,, meh,,I just woke up and walked out here and sat down. I'm heading to bed.
