Title: Odometer got stuck
Post by och on 09/09/23 at 16:36:09

Just when I thought I sorted out all the problems, something else broke. Went for a ride with a group of friends today, and the bike reached 6999 miles, and as I was riding the "tenths" digits were rolling from 0 to 9, but the rest of the odometer would not roll over to 7000 - they were just stuck at 6999. After about 40 miles the odometer finally rolled to 7000, and from there on continued to work normally. It appears that the "thousands" digit must have been stuck and had trouble rolling from 6 to 7, and other digits are working properly. I'm afraid it will happen again when I reach 8k, 9k and so on.

Anyone else ever have this issue?

Well, at least this will help your resale  ;D

Just joking.  I haven't had odometer issues except on my classic VWs.  Odometer problems are aggravating for sure.

It may be nice for resale, but it makes it impossible to track gas mileage and oil change intervals.

being off 40/50 miles every 1000 can't be too hard to deal with, don't do mpg over the 1k mark aint hard.

Do you have to Add oil between cha?

Haha.  I'd have settled if mine stopped at around 40.  I was briefly in great shape at that age.

Yeah, after all that happened with the recent repairs, it looks like my bike is burning .1 quart every 100 miles.

Your odometer is the least of your problems.
At forty MPG you're spending $7.50 on gas at $3.00/gallon, plus oil. Plus tires?

I used Dino oil. New oil, go long before adding.
As miles add up, oil use increased.
When adding became just irritating, I changed oil .
Three thousand miles? I don't think I was getting that between changes.

JOG is so correct , if it doesn’t leak oil. Modern oils are so much better than oils of the 70s. First of all , more truth with LARGE engines , every engine seeks its own level , right where it likes to run.  Don’t keep adding a 1/2 cup of oil. Level will stabilize then when you notice a drop from ITs level this first indicator to go buy oil & filter. On a tiny motorcycle engine it can be tough to know that small amount. So rule of thumb is  Look thru the window before you push the button !!!
