Title: Mid controls--again.
Post by Bob Scogin on 09/07/23 at 18:47:58

Having changed to a flat seat, and laced up an 18" rear wheel, I'm moving on to fabricating mid controls. I'm taking the design concept from the talented folks that have already done this. A big thanks for sharing! I'm keeping the belt drive for now, but will eventually go chain. The footpeg standoff will pass through the belt runs, but I would like to see how those of you who used a chain dealt with the narrower clearance created by a smaller diameter sprocket. Here's what I have so far, subject to final shaping and cleaning up the edges. XS400 footpegs should be here tomorrow.

I'm thinking of doing a reverse front extension.
like the front extension only to the rear.

You mean using the original forward mounting points but extending the pegs rearward? I considered that.

Making some progress on my mid controls following the basic design used by ohiomoto and other similar versions. I felt the shifter shaft was too far ahead of the footpeg, So instead of using a direct shifter, I decided to put the lever pivot point in a more conventional location relative to the peg by using a relay rod type linkage. Parts shown are still a bit rough and subject to clean up and finishing.

Good job , I like it , when you’re done it will be tough to tell it isn’t stock. I have the Ryca rear set bracket and sometimes I wish they were lower & a tad forward but I’ll never change it keeps me in attack position.

Nice work. I like the shift linkage.  I was planning on doing my next build that way.

When you get done, you should post your pics in the DYI Mid Control thread.  I think it would be helpful for others to see how you did yours.

I'll get some photos when I remove them for paint. Some of the parts were fabbed "quick and dirty" just to verify dimensions, angle, hole locations, and need tidying up, but I'll post pics and a narrative.

I'd be interested in ideas about how you guys installed the brake light switch on your mid controls.

I never did!

It's still on my to-do list along with the death trap side stand (it hangs too far below the frame and it nearly put me on the ground once).   Both items will be taken care of before I die or sell the bike.   I don't want anyone getting killed.

So I'll probably just copy whatever you do.  Please keep it simple.  haha

Lol! Simple is all my mind is capable of. I'll post my progress.

May I ask what was the end of the consideration? Can't be done?

To get the controls as far back as the mid point would have required long, cumbersome brackets and would have made the connection of rear brake and shifter more complicated. The Ryca approach, modified to use the Yamaha XS400 pegs and brackets per ohiomoto, is the better one.
